At first glance, I thought that was actually a chin... (And yes, I have actually seem people put piercings like that through their chin.)

You failed Earring Handling 101, didn't you.

I... oh, yeah, to organize it better would be
z1
z0, sorry. Dwarf fortress I kinda work into 'negatives' for floors by default. XD

But uh, would that work, for Wagons, is my question.
Yup, just be sure not to but magma behind the wall because what happens is part of the wagon ends up in the wall for a second or two before it changes level, meaning the animals will get lit on fire.  It basically counts the wagon as where the middle is.

HOOOOLD up a minute. This will be EXTREMELY useful for elf caravans.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Channelling fail... how to do it right?
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:39:24 am »
if you channel a one tile tunnel straight down you are fine if the bottom square is already mined out as long as the miner only falls 1 z level.

if channeling an area I usually designate it in a way such that every tile to be channeled can be dug from a solid ground tile next to it (not diagonally, only straight) once there done with the channeling, designate more tiles with a solid ground next to it, repeat until done. You need a ring (or at least one side) of solid ground around your hole to carry it off.

I'm not sure I believe this. It's not just the fall, is it? It's the cave in. I swear I've had miners kill each other while channeling just a single level. I'll have to double check.

("Hey! Urist! Go channel that entire platform!"

I have had success with this by increasing the number of good and evil squares required for an area. I think you get more zones like this if you just bump all numbers, but I really like bumping the small number a bit - I think it allows more variation over smaller scales, so you get more joyous terrifying zones. I think increasing the overall number of sites may help, given what was written about it in the wiki, but I can't confirm for sure.

I'm trying for zombie unicorns, but I'm not there yet.

Spoiler: Earring goes where? (click to show/hide)

She seems to be some sort of specialist.

Are you using advanced world gen or just the basic cookie cutters?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven Suicide
« on: March 12, 2012, 04:08:35 pm »
Do dwarfs still commit suicide and jump off bridges and such when melancholy?  It hasn't happened in one of my forts since 40d I think.  I really miss it.

I've had enough melancholy dwarves end up in the cistern that serves my main well that I'm pretty sure they try to find the most inconvenient way to commit suicide their little minds can think of.

I've gotten to the point where I just expect I'll end up with a dead dwarf in the cistern at some point and build it so that I can easily drain it for cleanout. This is in addition to building it with ramps/stairs out so non-suicidal dwarves who fall in can climb out, because I also know I'll end up with dwarves falling in on accident as well.

Isn't this precisely what slabs are for? Drain the cistern? What a pain in the ass.

Wait a minute... Seventy-Six grizzly bears in Mothhands, and One grizzly bear in Mothhands???

The solitary bear is a vampire
You make me wonder if you've ever played the game. Or looked at kill lists. Different genders are listed as separate. The one bear was a different gender than the seventy-six ones, most like.

So, either the sex ratio in that area is weirdly unbalanced, or this dwarf has it out for killing male (or female?) bears. (Which sex comes first on the list?)

My very first fort is the one I took my name from. Too bad that was a newbie fort, long gone now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Died of thirst...(34.02)
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:45:41 am »
It's not exactly that they hunger strike and suicide. It's that they get so pissed off they go insane. If you go berserk, the overseer can kill you. If you go stark raving mad or melancholy, you are too nuts to know to eat or drink and die (thirst usually kills first).

The other time this can happen is if you run out of buckets and your malingerers in the hospital don't get water because they can't move.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:01:04 am »
Just had an awesome evening last night. My dwarf caravan arrived within the zombiefied part of my embark, and while lost a few dwarves to my first ambush, a troop of lashers. Thus began a long cycle of micromanagement to get the bodies dead and recovered back into the safe part of the embark. It didn't quite work - I lost just enough militiadorfs to touch off a very nasty tantrum spiral, which claimed most of the militia, most of the starting seven, and many other migrants that all came related. I was saved by a few migrant waves (amazing they still came).

Then another ambush, which I was completely unprepared for, having lost my entire militia to the spiral. I lost a third migrant wave, and an elf caravan was slaughtered, and I finally defeated the ambush (how long will they stay for if you don't kill them???) by rebuilding my bridge and killing the leaders in a trap hall. Before I could do anything, a human caravan and another two ambushes, one lead by an elf, arrived simultaneously. I didn't have to do anything. Now it's time to get the defenses fixed and more militia trained, and to open the zombie arena for some science.

Get the unicorn onto the evil side and murder it. Unicorn zombies, you must make them.

I am working on this. I was going to have them in an arena, too.  But there is a tantrum spiral...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problems with Clay? (2012 .34.04)

Is this similar to the burrow issue that crops up with forges, or at least magma forges? Sometimes all it takes is removing them from a burrow.

I think you should just try it, see what did or didn't work, and improve on that. I don't think anyone has done exactly this, and certainly not in these recent versions, so you'll be contributing.

So you're having... a were-zombie spiral? This is new.
