DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: dwarves see the future!
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:08:37 am »
So we seem to confirm that artifacts are ordained in fate and the dwarves are nothing more than vessels through which the dwarven genetic moods take hold.

Does this imply a set number of artifacts?  If you embark enough, and fulfill enough moods, will they stop?

Interesting. I was thinking it could be generated at each embark, as opposed to "For the whole world". Is there any reason to expect one of these to be true and not the other? Clearly there are lots of lists (curses, titans, etc) that are given at wolrdgen. Are there other lists that are given at embark?

ALSO, what the fuck IF Toady had made artifacts quantum, such that their appearance wasn't fixed until you looked that them?? AMG that would break my mind.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My giant raven is laying eggs.
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:00:27 am »
Wild ravens will still spore a tame raven.  Just supply many nest boxes and wait for some wild ones to come by.  Any hatchlings will be tame, because the mother is.  It just depends on if your biome supports giant ravens, then it's only a matter of waiting for a flock murder to pass by...
Hate to be that guy (again), but this one's important.

A murder is crows, a group of ravens is collectively referred to as an "unkindness".
Ravens are crows. An unkindness of ravens is also a murder of crows. That's 'cause the Crow is the Family Corvidae while the Raven is the Species. For a moment of heartwarming, Magpies (also from the family of Crows) are Tidings. So it's comes from the Unkindness of the Ravens to upset the Crow family, leading to a murder of Crows. Since it's a family, the kind Magpies come with tidings. Neat thing I just thought.

Google magic, my friend.

EDIT: Adendum: Brazillian portuguese doesn't have a word distinguishing Crows from Ravens (they're all Crows, or Corvos). We have a word for Magpie (Pega-Rabuda), and they're all from the family Corvidae. Also, there's no such thing as "Murder of Crows". All groups of birds are flocks. Little culture for you folks!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!!!

True, but ... not quite correct! While both crows and ravens are in the same family, the Corvidae, as are magpies, that doesn't make them the same thing. Both crows and ravens are genus Corvus, but almost everything that's named "Raven" is more closely related, evolutionarily, to other things named "Raven" than to the things named "Crow". Ravens tend to be bigger with proportionately heavier bills. So, we English speakers have taken the words to distinguish between the two types, even if other speakers have not.

And while flock may work for "any bird", it's not like the English didn't say "murder of crows". The phrase may be archaic, but it does exist.

Or a "conspiracy".

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: DF 2012v0.34 question and answer thread

Weird question... how do you remove a down stair? I'm especially interested because I consistently use up/down stairs to sink exploratory shafts for finding magma, and I often run into the caverns. I can remove the up of the up/down, but... not the down?

A down stair is basically a hole in the floor- you'll have to floor over it.

Well. Somehow I thought I couldn't do that. If that's the case, that's all I want. Thanks.

Either way, any dwarf who knows his way around a light saber deserves an honored place in his fortress.

Absolutely! It took several years for the humans to show up so I could trade for an iron whip. And then, then came the water buffaloes...

« on: March 06, 2012, 09:10:24 am »
IIRC DF vampires don't take damage from sunlight, and if they're getting thirsty, hungry and tired, then they aren't vampires. Do you have some sort of evil rain in a corner of your map or something?

I thought this just varied... so that some vamps do, but many don't?

234
You can get back bolts that didn't break by using the "o" menu options, if I recall correctly. They will land unforbidden and ANY dwarf will run to pick them up. I don't think there's a way to get just one dwarf on bolt duty.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Lasher dwarf immigrant
« on: March 06, 2012, 09:07:06 am »
Hey all-

I had a lasher dwarf arrive as an immigrant in my last fort. I was quite excited. That fort has since dwindled (I think the lasher died to a water buffalo corpse), but it occurred to me now that ... perhaps he had been a vampire?

I had not had an immigrant with foreign weapon skills arrive before. Is this unusual?

Started a fortress. Going well. Managing things well. Main idea, is to have a zombie arena for training, with an area out of the biome where I can kill them if needed. First wave of migrants, remember the main goal. I figure I should double check to see if this is a zombie zone, since I haven't seen any corpses yet... Well, it's not.

/facepalm

With those nasty, big, pointy teeth, and a vicious streak a mile wide, you are obviously dealing with the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.

As long as the goblins don't bring the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch with them, your fortress will be well secured.

Thou shalt not count to four!

Five is right out!

Welp, that didn't work out.

The massive swarm finally struck down a GCS, who turned the tide of battle against me.

An undead Wren Man lopped the left arm off of my farmer, and the left arm came alive and beat him to death as he lay there unconscious.

Now I have 3 Dwarves left, no pets, and there are 32 zombies after them with 58 corpses waiting to be reanimated.  I have no stone, no miners, no way of sealing myself off.  This is by far the shortest fort I have ever ran.

It sounds awesome! I love the picture.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best animals to farm
« on: March 05, 2012, 09:53:02 am »
the leather item used for crafting has no base quality modifier, unlike cloth.
leather is also very cheap.

This makes it an excellent candidate for importing in massive quantities.

This. Wombat leather is 5 (count'em, 5) Urists. Buy 40 and turn it all into bags or something and sell half back, and you're profiting.

That said, the cheapest animal with highest reproduction/growth would be best for farming leather, since you only ever get one leather from an animal. I would guess this is goose or turkey or peahen, if the smaller birds don't provide leather.

I used to plan them but I was too perfectionist. Nowadays I prefer organic building. My tip is to use only one z level until it's full

Here a pic of my current fort

No you di'int! That's a goddamn giant dwarf ASCII in the middle of your fort! ĦQue dwarfy!
