DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: March 04, 2012, 07:19:39 pm »
Not for me, but for my forgotten beast...

Urist McForgottenBeast has come! A hideous duck made of snow! And he has appeared on a small ledge that is in my third cavern level! And because of a bug in my worldgen, there is magma flowing from one side of the ledge in and then off the map on the other side! The magma is at least 1/7! And HE IS MADE... OF SNOW!!!

I didn't worry about him. Fort death by zombie spiral later on.

Chickens. On floorgrates.

A line of floor grates 1 level above your main entrance with animals standing on them works for me. They can see goblins but so far goblin crossbowmen ignore them completely and refuse to fire up through the grates.

I have a line of ground-level dogs too but they're on the other side of a few traps and only there to slow down things that try to rush through before the magma jacuzzi can be activated.

Learn somethin' new every day... can't fire through grates, can they?

Apparently ghosts of her victims can turn into were-beasts themselves

(Stakud Mosusakmesh, Ghostly Trader has transformed into a weretortoise!)
Doesn't change him haunting nothing in particular though, I jumped for a bit when I saw the message, but false alarm.

WHOOOOAAA.

That's cool!

Looks like a consistent effect so far.

Really tough creatures to take out successfully.

Hrm.  Can an armless dwarf or dwarf with severely damaged, unuseable arms act as chief medical officer?  Obviously he's not going to do any of the work himself, but CMO's basically just create jobs for other doctors to do, right?

They need to diagnose. Not sure if they need to be mobile or have grasping for that, honestly, although I would assume mobility is a factor. Just try it!!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Nest boxes 'n' eggs
« on: March 02, 2012, 01:56:43 pm »
I build nestboxes behind a door, and then make the door forbidden but pet passable. Then the chickens/geese/gators/whathaveyou can enter, lay and incubate when they need to, but the dwarves won't access the box. This way the poults can also leave the room (if you care). Once I've got enough layers I build a few boxes that aren't behind the door, and we have egg roasts, while still having chick production from the forbidden coop.

One of my dwarves has just come out of the crossdressing closet and created "Lizardgrieves the Vanished Frigidity", a chicken leather skirt.

A Utilikilt, methinks.

Dear Urist McVampire,

I love you so dearly. The way you leave corpses lying around the fortress all drained of blood is just so adorable. You've been with me since the first migrant wave and you've been my faithful mayor, broker, and sole defender since then, somehow coming up on top of every berserk miner and goblin seige, no matter how many other people died, and I look forward to many centuries to come.

But damnit, why can't you be happy with your office?! The chair is made of gold, every surface is engraved, the room is filled to the brim with statues, and yet it still doesn't fit your requirements and it makes you unhappy enough to tantrum over it...

Also, can't you mandate anything but anvils? I'm running out of metal here...

Sincerely, Sick Vampire Sympathising Overseer

You can just melt the anvil and forge it anew. They don't realize.

Second mood of my new fortress is a secretive weaponsmith. As if that wasn't good enough, he made this:

Heartstone has a solid density of 50500.  :D

Uff da. That's awesome. Plus, vampire art, the volcano of healing, all in heartstone.

This topic made me think of one thing. Juggalo Dwarves.

AUGH.

I'm totally new to this, as well. I just downloaded wine using MacPort. All seems well. I then downloaded Phoebus's latest version. I have tried getting to the right directory, but when I run anything (wine "Dwarf Fortress" or wine df_phoebus_init_updater.bat) I get this: '/Users/nightwhips' is not owned by you, refusing to create a configuration directory there. I am at a loss. Can anyone advise? Or point me to the appropriate thread or info site? Tried googling that phrase and didn't get much that was immediately helpful. Thanks!

EDIT: I just used WineBottler and it's working, after a few stabs. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101189.msg3025468#msg3025468 helped. However, I can't get it to run the .bat files, which are the save game updater and such. So, I have the graphics tileset but none of the config options? Well, at least I can run Therapist now.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Trading Lavish Meals to Caravans
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:26:44 am »
You can bring barrels to the trade depot without actually trading them; you can easily just trade what's in them.
Are you sure about that? Last I checked, it was only possible to select the contents of bins, not barrels or any other containers.
seconded, as in 34.02, I couldn't sell the contents of barrels, only bins, although I think I read in some of the release notes something among the lines of being able to sell stuff without the container, it couldn't be bins since that's been working since before the update? I was under the impression that now you could also do the same with barrels, but when I tried in-game, found otherwise... maybe I got confused with something else??

For the OP, if you want to trade meals, in the depot use search for "roast" or "stew" or "biscuit", if they are inside containers, search for "food" order the barrels to be brought to the depot and forbid the contents, that will bring the empty barrel and drop the meals, then you unforbid the meals, have them brought to the depot and trade them individually.

Next time make prepared food only stockpiles without barrels, after a while the stacks get so big you won't be needing containers any more and by trading them individually you can hit "d" on the depot screen to order the items by value, usually the meals with less value (at the bottom of the list) will have smaller stacks, so by selling these you unclutter your food stockpile.

I learned so MUCH from this post.

I'm confused about searching, though. It looked to me like there was a "seize" option for s in the trade window...
