DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Masterwork only Fortress

It is in fact a colossal waste of time and effort

In other words, it is epicly dwarven and no other approach is even worth considering!  :)

YES!

Also, I feel somewhat disappointed to hear that only value matters to dwarves, over quality. Though I do realize that base value is modified by quality, so it's factored in.

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Fey_mood#Possessed

gives the translation of various desires as seen in the (q) option in the workshop (s)he takes, when item not found

note that sometimes you need to adjust your settings from the manager (he assigns bones ahead of time for example, so if you got a manager order for bone crafts, you may have to remove it, if your weird one is asking for it)

In general they dont ask for anything you cant produce with some effort. However, for example, the fact that you could make glass, doesnt mean you have the industry setup ready, or that you mined metal ore doesnt mean you got metal blocks any time soon

Note that the above is true and useful, but wasn't your issue. Your dwarf wanted a workshop you didn't have - that's why he stood around. The best way to figure out what they want is check their skill set. It will be one of those skills, but one that is "moodable" (see description above - no moods associated with mining, for example...). If a dwarf has no moodable skills, they'll take a craftsdwarf workshop, as I understand it.

This is the best and only reason for a bowyers workshop if you have metal, for example.

You're one of the 1%!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 37 war dogs vs. frogotten beast
« on: November 08, 2011, 09:49:58 am »
Man, people not reading...

He's all set! OP, if you have the dogs pastured next to the mine, and you really want to see the 37 on 1 fight, just open the way from the mines to the pasture area. If the pasture is pretty small, most/all your dogs will find the beast pretty quickly and you can see if they take it down. You could even first set up a drawbridge system in a tunnel further down so that you can close off the fight area in case the dogs lose.

Yeah, the blood washes off units. And it gets everywhere. I have a waterfall in my dining room that drains to a trough below, and the walls of the trough are completely smeared with blood and there's blood in the water.

Masterwork. Iron. Bolts.

Sells for 3000 db for every 25 bolts.

If you're going this route, may as well decorate them with bone or gems. Ups the value even more.

Eh. Now there's rotten crundle meat all over. This is AWFUL.

Hopefully we can get the crundle tallow roasted soon, for sale to the long-ears.

It says she's not enraged any more, so that's good.

I had this issue.

I made it stop by turning off auto-collect. Let the game run a little bit. Turned it back on. No problem anymore, and lots of web collection. YMMV.

Epic forgotten beast fight. Quardruped with antennae, made of clear glass. Had poisonous vapors. Killed the first five dwarfs that rushed it singly, and I only began making headway when my army en masse got there. Very long fight, lots of "but the shot glances away!". I finally brought it down. And then ... Urist McFBFighter is winded. Odd. He feels numb! Oh no! "Urist McFBFighter has suffocated"x13.

Oh man.

I gotta figure out a better way of handling FBs. Too bad my caverns are so awesome.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that in the middle of all that, I got the word that NO, I would NOT be receiving any migrants this year.

I just found a mutilated crundle corpse and several units of crundle fat in my butchershop. Time to make soap!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Another Project - Dwarven EcoCity 2020
« on: November 04, 2011, 11:22:49 pm »
This will be two posts;

I didn't realize I needed a cavern for plump helmets; I somehow thought those were exempt for no reason I can think of. Good to know. So far we've managed, though.

This will be finished - rest assured. I do not know why, since this is clearly a horrible idea. But I am a Taurus born in the year of the Tiger. I decided to do it, therefore it will be done. (Also, I am surprised how quickly the Itza got done.) Please, please, please... do not shave a beard. Maybe a whisker or two'd be fine. [You can not possibly have a razor that can shave a dwarven beard clean off, can you?]

I only hope Overseer renders this better than the previous project.

A second post comes with a picture.

A razor of candy would work on any dwarven beard, and they'd be proud.

As long as she has the bedroom, sleeping in the older one shouldn't matter. On the contrary, now she has two bedrooms. As far as the graves go, I figure that the entire room counts as a tomb, regardless of whether you set it to be or not. Simply build her a new coffin somewhere in the room and set the entire thing as hers. you can keep putting in graves for laydwarves I think, so it would ultimately save space.

Are you sure about this? My mayor keeps getting a bad thought from sleeping in a crappy room, even though she owns a spectacular one. She's my legendary brewer, and I think she brews until she's tired and then sleeps whereever, leading to bad thoughts.
