According to the wiki and from what I've heard, yes. Never wanted to try it myself for obvious reasons. Except maybe on the elves...

In a way it makes sense. A novice would make a fatal mistake in a sparring session, one that'd probably make his partner part company with their head.

My stay was dotted with random crashes at jumpgates, then a massive patch... that caused constant crashes and completely failed to work for the rest of my trial.
Massive turnoff.
I mean, WoW has buggy patches, but EVE's just completely failed to work at all.

It was quite funny, the poor thing just kept going unconscious every four seconds and sat around. It even had the courage to very, very slowly crawl onto land and towards the doors leading to the rest of the fortress.
I finally had to get rid of it since dwarves pissing their pants and running away crying from an unconscious, injured cave crocodile were getting annoying
If I ever get the chance I should check to see if it got noted in the legends screen. Maybe I can find out what it did besides crawl around coughing.
Perhaps you mean the parentheses? That indicates that the item was created outside of your fortress and does not contribute to fortress wealth. Or exported wealth. Or something. I think both. Those can be traded but they cannot be given as an offering to merchants.

One day, my captain of the guard was taking a break outside, and a giant sand desert scorpion decided to take a stroll near the entrance of my fort. A few dwarves pissed their pants in fright and dropped what they were doing to go cry in a corner, but the brave captain charged at it with his axe. The scorpion took notice and quickly began running. After looping all the way to the top of the map, then back down towards the entrance... it passed by the entrance again, and the hammerer, also assumably, on break noticed the scorpion and went after it. The scorpion was stopped by the captain and started to beat him up. He had already gotten a few injuries by the time the hammerer started attacking, then the scorpion started beating on the hammerer. After recieving a mangled wound, a hammer found its mark and killed the scorpion.
Leaving me with both dwarves with mangled limbs! They haven't healed yet and it's been at least 10 years since that incident.
