The closest thing to a (non-space) RTS 4X is Kohan (I prefer the 1st as there is no restriction as to where you can build more cities).

Oh damn, I forgot about that game. It's one of the best RTS games. I didn't liked Kohan 2. that much, part 1. was much better.

What about corgis?  Don't know much about them myself, but the way my brother talks about them, they sound like they meet the criteria.  Someone who knows more should come in and say something.

Those dogs are very intelligent, but kinda weird looking... ;D

DF General Discussion / Re: Show us YOUR dwarven beard!

I tried growing a beard... For some reason it made everyone go "TERRORIST! YOU DID 9/11!"... I hated that period of my life.

People like this are idiots.
'Nuff said.

Indeed. Those people are ignorant... ::)

Elemental – polishing for Alpha 0
http://forums.elementalgame.com/355507

So much going on this week and at the same time, so little. A lot of vacations here at Stardock pop up in June since this is one of the prime months here in terms of weather.

On a sad note, Trent (Mittens) had his last day today. He’s off to Salt Lake City to take a position as a designer at a new game studio.  We’ll miss him.  Combined with the people on vacation, the studio area feels like a ghost town.

My executive planner and marketing manager gave me a “CEO make over” today with a bunch of new clothes. I guess trade show shirts and ratty shorts just aren’t good enough anymore.

Right now, we’re looking at dozens of issues that need to be addressed before we can even do the alpha build of the game.  Everything from the fonts looking crummy to setting priority on what should be on the setup.

For instance, if someone wants to create a custom civilization and in there choose “good” or “evil” that’s fine. But I’m having them get rid of being able to have pre-existing factions be good or evil because it would literally double the writing involved for each faction’s back story.  While that’s interesting to have, I would rather have more depth per faction rather than half the depth but a mirror universe version of each one.

The screen you see here will likely be significantly altered between now and release. But this gives you an idea of how iterative the process is.  I’ll probably eliminate the appearance area and put that into the custom race area. Right now, “design your race” is the only option. There isn’t a formal “choose your faction” area.  Elemental comes with 2 built in races and 12 factions but we plan to let people create their own races and factions as well, but that should be a separate area that is a lot richer. If you try to mash too much stuff together, it’s confusing to new players but still too weak for experienced users.

I loved part 4. Maybe I am the only one on this forum?  ;D
Either way, T2 was the best imo, followed by T4&T1. T3 kinda sucked. This is my opinion at least.

Shiver me timbers, ye scurvy dogs!

The future of politics is now uncertain.

tl;dr:
There is a political party of pirates (with affiliation to The Pirate Bay) with essentially identical interests/goals. It was almost joke. The Pirate Party now has a seat in parliament and is almost looking like a serious political party.

I was like "what the hell?!", when I've heard about this yesterday...interesting stuff.  :D

General Discussion / Re: Computer Question
« on: June 09, 2009, 01:19:35 pm »
I'm willing to spend as much money as I have on this.
Problem is, I have no money.

Also, I heard that DF only uses one-core, so dual-core processors don't help.

Right now I'm running an iBook G4 with 10.3.9.
Processor speed is 1.07Ghz.
Memory is 512 MB DDR SDRAM.

Yeah... this computer sucks.

Well if you don't have [enough] money, it's a serious problem, isn't it?  ;D
Either way...yeah DF uses 1 core only, but dual core is still much better. Why? Because your OS + apps will run on core 1, while DF will only use core 2. [If you set it up like that at least..]

Just one word: cave-in
Yeah...because we had to deal with it in the 2D version. I remember that my first "fortress" was very short lived because of cave-ins.  ;D
I really miss the old cave-in system, because it was somewhat realistic. [Somewhat, because it wasn't material dependant of course, but Toady should be able to code in a material based cave-in system if I am correct.  :)]

Why don't you use your credit card?  ???

General Discussion / Re: Drama and flamewars
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:33:12 pm »
Does anyone else find themselves reading old locked topics, just to get a drama fix? It's sort of worrying. I do it rather often, searching up old topics from bay12. Partly it's because Bay12ers always have such interesting arguments but I think it's mostly that I just like seeing a whole argument pan out in front of my eyes, witnessing the start of the discussion, the spark, the argument and the finale.

Is this strange? Or rather, is this stranger than normal?

Nop it's not strange...this means that you have too much free time.  ;D
