Forum Guidelines
I think instead of 'good' suggestions, which is debatable, you should just list common suggestions. Even things that are generally shot down, like grinding rock to sand, should be compiled to reduce the frequency with which they are suggested. Hopefully it will get read and this forum will be less cluttered.
Also, for an on-topic moment, there's currently an implementation-focused thread on sieges here.
Note: Hilariously BAD idea for single core systems.
Realtime means that the application will have higher priority than, well, ANYTHING. Including mouse/keyboard/network drivers, for example.
It's entirely possible to completely lock your system by doing that.
Addition: In fact, if you notice any input lag, mouse slowness or the like, setting the game to idle WILL improve that. I never run any 3d game on anything higher than idle, quite simply because it helps shit run faster by allowing the OS to perform at best speed.
It may be un-intuitive, but it works and is true.
95% chance: no. I think the only game so far that allowed cross-platform multiplayer was Shadowrun.
Go for it, but be careful with your definition of good. It's either your suggestion or it's the group's suggestion. The minute you get partial...
Microsoft Developers' NetworkQuoteMultimedia Class Scheduler Service
The Multimedia Class Scheduler service (MMCSS) enables multimedia applications to ensure that their time-sensitive processing receives prioritized access to CPU resources. This service enables multimedia applications to utilize as much of the CPU as possible without denying CPU resources to lower-priority applications.
MMCSS uses information stored in the registry to identify supported tasks and determine the relative priority of threads performing these tasks. Each thread that is performing work related to a particular task calls the AvSetMmMaxThreadCharacteristics or AvSetMmThreadCharacteristics function to inform MMCSS that it is working on that task.
Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP/2000: MMCSS is not available.
So A) if you're using anything earlier than Vista, then apparently this is not relevant, and B) it looks like applications need to be specifically programmed to take advantage of the service, or else the service doesn't do anything special to give them higher priority.
most are great ideas but
- I dont want the siege to stop after killing the leader. it should be a random chance that the goblins would run
- building a bridge over the moat is a little weird as bridges require planning and all. there should be siege ladders and those portable bridges. which they bring next time if they encounter a moat this time (like you said)
other than that good ideas!
Before anyone says anything, that this idea is more of a fantasy of mine. Not something I'm requesting or demanding.
Not on the same map, but two simultaneous Dwarf Fortresses Independent from each other with their own unique maps. However, whenever a player wants to he can send an armed force to attack the enemy fortress, at which point the units leave by reaching the edge of his fortress area and reappear on the other players area edge as hostile. Players can also send thieves and tamed animals to attack the enemy.

Oh Windows Media Player.
Read this for example:
http://www.fpsgod.com/windows-media-player-performance-tweak/
"Apparently Windows Media Player will speed up the performance of your computer due to a service that it uses called, Multimedia Class Scheduler Service.
Multimedia Class Scheduler Service (MMCSS) is a Windows service that boosts the CPU as well as I/O priority of a thread. It allows an application to get prioritized access to CPU for time-sensitive processing (such as multimedia applications) as well as prioritized disc access to ensure that the process is not starved of data to process. The MMCSS service monitors the CPU load and dynamically adjusts priority so that the application can use as much CPU time as possible without denying CPU to lower priority applications.”
If this is true the question is why is MMCSS not running all the time, or at the very least a (more) well known process that you can easily start for yourself without starting WMP.
what is a niche game?
