I use rising drawbridges as gates for my outside wall (as I have done dozens of times).  This time something weird happens: when I raise them, they vanish.  The map looks like there is no bridge there, up or down, but if I look with k it says "rough gabbro bridge" and if I use q it thinks there is a building to disassemble.  Even worse, invaders can walk through with impunity.  When I lower the bridge it appears normal.

Does anyone know if this is a bug?  I have 8 bridges, two of which consistently do this.

It seems that Runesmith doesn't work with the new version (right?), but I really need to kill one creature in a running game. Any utilities that would let me accomplish this?

There has been a fire burning in my stockpile for about three years.  Is there some way to tell what is burning?  There's nothing obvious, like a lump of coal, and in any case surely any normal fire would have burned out by now?

My military dwarfs have been getting "Soldier (no activity)" listed as a job lately.  They seem to get it no matter what their scheduled order, and they just wander around the map aimlessly. If I give them a move or kill order, they still obey it. Any ideas what's going on?

You can mess around with the priorities in the squad equip screen. The squad with highest priority gets first pick of any equipment, leaving the remaining squads with the cast-offs, hand-me-downs and second-rate items. So put your archers at the bottom of the list. Then they'll wear the metal if no other soldiers claim it. You may need to assign them an empty uniform temporarily to get them to drop their high-quality items.

I have found that dwarfs using the generic archer uniform will take the best armor/helm/etc instead of using the leather equivalents as listed in the uniform. It's frustrating when the guy behind the fortifications has the steel helmet instead of the axedwarf out front. I'm not sure how to fix this - the uniform is very clear about material.  Any suggestions?

A few interesting things popped up late in the game:
- The golem forge and creature armory stopped working around year 8.  The workshops would produce boulders of blinding light in huge quantities, but no transformation would occur. I tried it with many different dwarfs, and it worked several times earlier in the game.
- A drow diplomat got stuck in my fortress, casting cloud of darkness every couple of months and triggering an ambush warning. No hostile action and no diplomacy, just stayed in the spot reappearing.

Is there any way to tweak how sensitive merchants are to attacks? When I have lots of hostile races, it's nearly impossible for caravans to make it all the way to my fortress without one attack. Even if I kill all the hostiles before a merchant is killed, they still flee.  I have had one caravan make it in in the last five years (with dwarfs, humans, elves, and drow).

One of my golems has just been elected mayor.  He has the usual requirements of furniture, etc. However! No rooms can be assigned him since he is technically an animal.  Should be an interesting tantrum!
