DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No troll is an island
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:42:35 pm »
After my last siege, the siege tag wasn't going away even though it seemed as though I had killed all the invaders.  So I check out the units menu and discover one last troll - somehow stranded on a single tile of land in the middle of a lake (4-5 water tiles on all sides).  I had no idea how he got there, and he clearly had no idea how to get off.  My first thought - send in the marksdwarves! Unfortunately they won't accept a kill order if they can't path to it.  So now I've set up a ballista aimed at him and lob a giant arrow at him whenever I'm bored. He's been there for about a year now - he even hung out through later sieges.

Is there any way to cancel a soldier's pickup equipment task?

Civilian alerts override normal burrow assignments.  When the alert is active, he'll be limited to burrow B, and not restricted by burrow A at all.

Thank you sir!

What happens if I have a dwarf assigned to burrow A, but then I set the civilian alert to restrict everyone to the non-overlapping burrow B?

Do you have a meeting area set up? If you don't have one then dwarves are free to hang out wherever they want, but with one they should tend to congregate there.

Yep, a gigantic dining room (set as meeting hall), a zoo, and a statue garden.  That's what makes this so odd - they don't go running around outside or in the caverns this way, but something about Hell makes them giddy!
Set as a meeting hall allows dwarves to use it for parties. Do you also have a meeting area zone defined in your dining room?

Is this a real distinction? I didn't realize.  I've never had any trouble with migrants and such using my dining hall as a gathering point.

Have you tried marking the place as d-o-(r)erstricted traffic? That way only dwarfs with jobs should go there.

wouldn't that only keep them from going there en route to somewhere else? It's the end of the line, so to speak.

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange dwarf behavior in the circus [SPOILERS]

WARNING: Many SPOILERS here!!!

I've been attempting to build my first outpost in Hell, and I've been stymied by my dwarfs being stupider than normal. The primary problem is that dwarfs with no job seem to decide that Hell is a great place to hang out - literally dozens of them go running out into Hell with no goal or task. Naturally they get slaughtered.  Burrows don't help, because the dwarfs don't have jobs, they're just wandering.  Any advice on how to keep the morons under control while still letting the masons down to build the walls?

My queen finally arrives - and she's an elf! Bad enough, but I can't assign her any rooms, she just doesn't appear on the list.  Even worse, her bodyguards don't appear on the units list (though I can see them in Dwarf Therapist) and I can't add them to the military.  Anyone know what might be going on?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Humiliation in the training room
« on: November 17, 2011, 12:23:32 pm »
So I'm trying to get some experience points for new recruits by sending them in to battle naked goblin prisoners.  These two gents, fully kitted up in steel armor and training swords to maximize the battle time, stride in.  The ordinary goblin spearman kills one by punching him in the head THROUGH THE STEEL HELM and cripples the other by breaking both legs using his PIG TAIL HOOD as a weapon.  Sigh.

If I hit the population cap, and then lose lots of dwarfs, do I get new migrants? Or does hitting the pop cap turn off migrants forever?

You might want to move this to the modding forum, as a missing plant gloss is a problem with the raws/graphics and how the game is reading them. For the moment though did you make any changes to the raws/graphics/init file before this error started happening?

i2amroy, no one on the mod forum seems to be responding. Do you happen to know what files I should be looking at to fix such a problem?

DF Modding / Crash: "Missing plant gloss:"
« on: November 15, 2011, 01:15:13 pm »
DF keeps crashing when I try to load one particular save game with the error "Missing plant gloss." Other saves load fine. I've been told that this is a graphics error (I use Ironhand via the LNP) so I should post here.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

No, I've never edited any of those files.
