DF General Discussion / Re: Getting from .05 to .08

Thanks for the quick responses, and I should have realized any solution would begin and end with diffing files. ;)

DF General Discussion / Getting from .05 to .08
« on: August 11, 2014, 02:11:44 pm »
Hi folks,

When we moved from .04 to .05, we could update the vocab files to "unfix" YORE to YOR so we could continue playing our .03/4 games. When .06 was released, hand-editing the vocab files to "yor" no longer worked, but no one could really explain another solution like this one (I'm guessing me and those other folks were in a very small minority). Well, now we're at .08 and some particularly vexing issues have been fixed.

If there is a fundamental incompatibility betwixt "edited.05" and .08 then I'll sadly abandon my game, but if it is a raw fix like the yore thing, then I'd like to do so and keep playing. Is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction or at least let me know if I am pretty much going to have to abandon my world?

Thanks!

How exactly do you turn in a quest? I was asked to go kill a Wicked Horror (which really never fought back, so that was depressing), which I did. Now I have the problem of:
1) I have no idea who gave me this quest, and it might have been one of my companions?
2) I have no idea how to get credit - is it only the person who gave it to me who can reward me?
3) I have no idea WHERE I got the quest, and I suspect I have to return to that spot?

Here's all the details I can muster:
I have an event:
Death/Arani Twilightshades the Cavernous Shadow-Dust

Recentering on selected points at the cave that I killed them at.

There is also:
Beast/Arani Twilightshades the ...

Which also points at that cave.

Is it possible this isn't a quest at all?
You propobly doesn't get a quest, just heared a rumor. Beast/Arani is event, who will get you ocastion to spread rumor about his presence in some location. Death/Arani can is event, who will give you option about his death "you, companion, companion slaw Arani". And yes, you can get fame because you first spreaded rummors about presence and then death.

You can get quest for example from your lord/queen/priest/boss/leader, not from peasent.

Thanks all for the clarity. Do I only need to tell one person in a hamlet about my exploits, or everyone?

Also, how do you track fame?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bedrooms: Have I've been wasting time

The wiki really should make this more clear. The line quoted above feels like some advanced concept that one would explore later, not a fundamental ease-of-play issue.

I am very pleased I don't have to pause the game for an hour to designate all my new migrants into a bedroom!

By Elves? You take their wood? Meanie.

Every game I have played (4) I have started out at war with Elves. I am convinced all this talk of trading with them is a myth.

I'm pretty sure I bought it. I buy every animal from caravans, because I love them so.

Is he in the z - animals list? Then he's one of your civ's animals

Sadly, he is not! But as an aside I did discover that many of my named pets have no owners. I guess in Zasiston, if you own a pet, you will die soon!

I do not have PET_EXOTIC as I am running a mod that makes them all PET.

If I select a pasture and the add/remove function, he is listed, and is the only animal listed without (tame) after the name (except the war pandas sent by those bastards the elves).

DF Gameplay Questions / How to tame my moose
« on: September 04, 2011, 03:33:33 pm »
I bought a moose from the nice human merchant with the shifty eyes. It came with its own cage! When I went to release him into my pasture, I noticed he was not listed as tame.

Now I am trying to tame this moose. He was in a cage in a stockpile and I couldn't get him to show up in the "Tame Large Animal" list at my kennel. So I built the cage near the kennel, and still he does not show up.

How can I tame this moose?!?

I just found out after many hours of play that the Dwarves have no king, which I am told will keep me from progressing in some way with my fortress. So my question is - is there a thread with instructions on how to mod in a king so I can progress?

I will try that in the future!

Now the guy is sitting in jail, his sentence finished, and every time the jailer walks up I get:
<name> cancels Release Large Creature: Wrong Justice state

Every time I have a jailed dwarf he dies of starvation or thirst. How do I get my dwarves to care for the prisoner? I moved the jail cage to the dining room in hopes someone would throw him some scraps but to no avail!
