Large mass drivers firing cheap, high-density rounds (copper, maybe) would work very well against asteroids, since the force of impact would greatly alter their course, pushing them out of the path of their target.

It may be an empty threat, but they might not know that.  In any case, it at least lets them know that we're serious.

You cannot build a bridge and a floor grate in the same tile.  Two buildings cannot share the same space.
Yeah, you'd have to do something like this:

     |...|____
     |_______  --> to forge areas, etc.

... = bridge
## = floor grate

Upon life signs failing cutoff the psychic link between that maven and the rest. Also when in pain cut off that psychic transmission as well.
I like the first idea, but not necessarily the second idea.  It seems like you'd be cutting a maven off from vital help just when they need it most.

Also, all that would do would be to save the other mavens from actually experiencing the one's death, which is probably good.  But they would still know that they had died.  What about the psychological trauma of having someone you've known better than is humanly possible dieing?

... = floor grate, which stops creatures and cannot have stuff pushed through it when submerged

Alternatively, use a floor HATCH or a floodgate or whatever and just have it close once you've tapped enough lava for your purposes.
This would be fine for keeping out magma crabs, etc, but a building destroyer (such as a magma man) would go right through that.

I just thought of a very serious potential problem with our maven program.  Since they are all so interconnected, what happens if one of them dies?  At best, it would be the most tragic thing possible for the rest of them.  At worst, it might kill them all.

Strongly discourage settlement on Gaia, but do not prevent it.  Also, why don't the Mavens have awesome battle armor yet?  Said battle armor must have built-in jetpacks.

But the volcano worked just fine (ie. it just sat there like a boring, well-behaved volcano) for several months during my initial embark.  In fact, I'm almost positive that I checked the top of the volcano and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed several stories of magma sticking up above the rim!  The problems didn't start till I tried to reclaim.

Hmm... we tried to make SPARTANs and we ended up making the Borg.

Anyway... continue Maven project anyway!  Give them muscle implants and power armor.  Theres no way this could go badly. 

Also, have we tried to signal the terraforming outposts on Gaia?

I tried to reclaim a fort built into the side of a mountain that had a volcano in it.  I hadn't breached the volcano yet at all.  It is quite possible that someone fell in since there was some fighting going on in that area.  Anyway, all of the sudden, the lava is pouring out over the rim of the volcano and lighting the mountainside/my dwarves on fire!  Now everyone is dead and much of the map is covered with huge lava flows.  !!Fun!!

I checked the wiki, and it claims that volcanic eruptions are planed but not yet implemented... I beg to differ!  Someone in the page's talk mentioned a bug that may or may not have been fixed when volcanoes and glowing pits occupied the same spot that could cause some sort of problem?
