DF Suggestions / Re: Why dwarves do not poo or have (almost) no sex?
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:01:10 pm »
I don't want dwarf fortress to be half about dealing with shit. which is exactly what this suggestion would do to the game. (seeing goonstation players in here honestly doesn't reinforce the 'for' side of the argument.)
I don't see how goonstation players affect your game... unless you are one yourself.

For example, you designate a defecation zone. If it's in a river, preferably downstream your drinking zone. If it's in the woods, you might need to zone a new one once every five years if your population is large. You might have more dwarves annoyed by flies. But that's about it: no more than you need to do to to provide water, just in the reverse, and similarly with the option to dig a well, but in the reverse. Most importantly, you'd get the option to build a compost pile building, that spontaneously deconstructs into a few items of fertilizer after a four or five months (automated like render fat would be nice). It really wouldn't be much more than this in a basic form. I'd prefer to add the liquid, for the tanner and various chemical applications, too.

goonstation thing was a poke at the largest community of assholes in SS13, who singlehandedly ruined it, roughly akin to minecraft griefers.

but ANYWAYS, it is not so much i would not like the feature, but i want it AFTER other inside threats are more fleshed out.

with current DF you would have. 3% food, 7% nobles 10% happiness, 30% engineering fuckups, 50% shit to clean up as your internal conflicts.
if more stuff was added, and other features re-balanced you would get a situation where this idea becomes a wonderful implementation.

however, I would prefer it be implemented in a slightly less intrusive manner, as the ideas in this thread would make it a main focus of your fortress. realistic? yes. fun? no.

I just don't like them insulting Toady, the guy who makes a game he full well intends to possibly devote his life to, makes it FREE. (sure he gets like 7k donations a month if you REALLY want to argue that, its barely above the cost of middle class living in america nowadays.)

also, how the fuck is dwarf fortress getting 'worse'.[/rant]

but in all seriousness the game looks like it will be good, i just see a serious issue with the people over there saying that kind of shit about dwarf fortress.
$500 says they are pissy since they're fort died in the first week, and they ran buthurt back to call of duty.

I'd actually rather big infrequent updates so i dont need to constantly recreate my fortress but i usually just wait for a pause or pick an update to pause at which i'm going to do soon hence asking when the next update is going to be hehe.

you know your lying to yourself, you'll abandon and download the latest version the instant it comes out, everyone does it, its ok.

So THAT'S how temples work.... ok then.
also, nice job ripping a magma elemental apart.

it is now my opinion that you are an awesome dwarf fortress player, not for having a nice militia early on, not for making a fort at a cold volcano, but.

for saving a hospitalized dwarf in a water-less area.

EDIT: for typos.

I swear i have a bug to report, but i keep fucking forgetting it every time i open the page.

anyways, ill let you know of any i find. (and i mean ANY not just major ones.)

sounds like your a DF military junkie  ;).

on that note go chech out Meph's masterwork DF mod you would love it.

on topic, with how careful you are about injuries im gonna have to go with,
Maybe cave adaptation vomiting counts as a major injury or something?
i would do the science but i have NEVER had a cave adapted dwarf do to my dining rooms having gem window ceilings.

It's the only non-modding way to train marksdwarves without using any bolts. If you don't give them crossbows either then they won't train as hammerdwarves. I guess they sit around during the demonstration and make "pew pew" noises while posing with their hands.

im going to sig this, unless you don't want me to for some bizarre reason...
also, its the first post i have ever sigged anywhere, be honored.

Major mental injury?

are you using any mods, such as genesis?
could it be possible it was a major injury in a portion of the body that heals find naturally, smaller bone bruise etc etc?

now the no medical history is fairly odd... does he work in a dangerous section of the fort? caverns? surface?

1436
No dreams... possibly some MAY have been influenced idk.

however it does seem to be subtly affecting the ways i think.
im pretty sure i have started judging a lot of materials irl by what weapons they would be best used for making.
i have started eating mushrooms, which i hated before.
and i have become slightly MORE sadistic inside.

also, this.
I've gone asking people whats the best way to kill somebody.
They commonly go for the mundane, "Stab the guy," or, "Shoot him."
When they ask what I think, I tell them any number of the ways I've killed somebody in Adventure Mode
try it, its fun.

DF General Discussion / Re: Your First Time (playing DF)
« on: January 25, 2012, 12:14:18 am »
I want you all to think back to your first time playing dwarf fortress, now funny thing is it may not be the time you think it was.

i recently remembered that a LONG time ago, about when i was 6-7 i played an ASCII game about dwarfs, and gave up in what i now believe was worldgen (derp)
i just found it kind of interesting that my first time i played DF was earlier than i thought. jogged back into memory by someones post in the help section i believe.

so what do you remember about your first time playing DF? did you give up in 2 minutes? or did you struggle on for days before figuring it out? or did you even get it right away?

So you're 15 now? Since it didn't actually come out till '06?

.... late 16's, my estimate was slightly off... by the way, DF was a HELL of a lot more confusing than. no tilesets had been really developed, no major documentation etc etc.

(don't read this if you would like to not be meme traumatized.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

but in all seriousness.
Call of duty was good years ago. than the maker got greedy. (everyone will agree.)
Halo was good years ago, but than Bungie got greedy. (sorry halo fans, its true.)
minecraft was good way the fuck back in alpha. (than Notch got Lazy/Greedy.)
(now honestly i apologize for this painful truth.) Bethesda's games used to be good, but then they got un-imaginative. (i shit you not half of Skyrim was taken straight from the mythology's of several cultures.)
[INSERT MAINSTREAM SERIES] [INSERT PARENTHESIS FROM ABOVE]

Dwarf Fortress was good back in 2D. and, welp, it has only gotten better as Toady is neither lazy nor greedy.

damn.. three dead. gotta watch them cave-ins.

anyways.
ill sign up for a dwarf.

idea, meph's masterwork DF mod has a creature that webs stuff. adding a similar creature to your game would allow you to create traps to catch procedurally genned monsters.
