Townsfolk say outlaw is "nearby" to the North East.
I finally figured out how to walk North East.
How far do I have to go? Seems like I've been going forever. There was a river I couldn't figure out how to cross so I fast traveled to the other side of it. Then I thought I went too far so I came back. Then I figured out how to get in the river and drowned.

How far is "nearby"?

Also, with whom doth I trade? Traders don't trade. They tell me to find a shopkeep.

I see the wiki and I'll be reading through that when I get off of work tonight, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend some well-put-together, mildly entertaining video tutorials for DF Adventure mode?

DF Suggestions / Societal Demands & Politics
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:39:44 pm »
Dwarves should demand certain things like entertainment -- organized gladiatorial fights, gambling, brothels, what have you; specific politics -- political parties/types of government (the mayor changes via some kind of election, well what if one side decided they wanted to remove the mayor/baron/expedition leader by force?); and even certain types of goods/constructions (they want a particular fashion -- leather clothes, a specific color cloth; or style or type of food/meat; etc).

DF Gameplay Questions / This game is delightful!
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:13:36 pm »
Through a series of unfortunate events, I accidentally had 2 Forgotten Beasts trapped in the same hallway leading up from caverns to my main fort. I immediately sealed off the entrances via dropping a bridge over the next up/down stairway 2 z-levels above.
Now, there was a war dog on a chain in front of traps in that hallway to stop anything from sneaking in from below (if things from below can sneak, I don't know). When one FB encountered the war dog it immediately released this massive cloud of poisonous dust. The dog and the FB fought, the dog died. But now the hallway is covered in poisonous dust and poisonous blood. The second FB rolled around in it, apparently, and after about 5 minutes it killed it.

Basically one FB killed the other.

XD

What percentage of my total dwarven population should be professional military? Right now I'm at about 10% but one good FB and it's down to 3%. I was thinking about upping to about 45% since most of my populace are just item haulers/idlers anyway. What do you normally do?

DF Suggestions / Dwarven Gasmasks and other small oddities...
« on: September 01, 2011, 01:47:04 pm »
I noticed some enemies, Forgotten Beasts or what have you, exude noxious gas. I assume the deeper you go one might find caverns full of or pockets of poisonous gas, fumes, dust or what have you as well. And even if that doesn't happen, I was thinking that it really doesn't matter how decked out with armor your dwarf is, if he walks into a noxious cloud that paralyzes his breathing, he's going to die. So what if, using small mechanisms and an animal stomach, bladder or some leather skins, the dwarves can make a gas mask or breathing apparatus to either filter out noxious gas or help them breath under water for a very brief period of time?
I imagine if that kind of air/liquid bladder container could be adapted to other things as well, combining it with a backpack and some kind of tubing or hose could make for a makeshift flamethrower -- possibly a seige engine flamethrower or other liquid or chemical sprayer could be possible too (igniteable fluid, creature venom, domesticated animal milk or ale for lulz).

And not to go all steampunk but if they can use tiny mechanisms to build a gasmask, how about some WWI style trenchcoats, goggles, and the like to protect their eyes in battle. Maybe some very basic gunpowder style musket-meets-crossbow weaponry. Stuff that's kind of effective but also prone to blowing up in dwarves faces?

Maybe that would lead to dwarf-on-dwarf warfare. Like other dwarven colonies or somesuch. I don't know. Fighting for territory sounds kind of cool but the mental image of dwarves now doing trenchwarfare just gave me a shiver.

I LOVE DWARF FORTRESS!!!!

DF Gameplay Questions / "Resting Inury" - Wound to 'Heart' in Child
« on: September 01, 2011, 01:14:42 pm »
I keep getting notices about "resting injuries." Like a job task was canceled because of it. I would check the dwarves and find no wounds. Just now I checked a child who had a 'resting injury' and realized the wound list scrolled down. When I did, it says "heart" in yellow text. Like his heart is somehow wounded.

What is happening?

I have a war dog that single handedly killed a Hill Giant made of amber. It had freezing breath too. I got a warning of it's invasion like a Forgotten Beast but it came topside, not from a cavern. This war dog got wrecked. Parts are missing. Every goddamn limb is broken. But no arteries are torn and he's not really bleeding. Just heavily unconscious.

Is there a way to get him medical help? I have a hospital and a kennel.

39
I have a 4x5 grid of cage traps at the only entrance to my fort. Goblin thieves come in, get spotted by people, are chased out and wind up in the cages. They are immediately transported to an animal/cage stockpile. But it seems like I keep seeing "urist mcfatpants interrupted by goblin thief" and then I look and its one of the same two goblin thieves caught in the traps running around again and the whole cycle starts over, they bolt for the entrance, are attacked, caught in trap, carried back to stockpile.
I keep marking them for trade in the trade depot. I was hoping I could sell them to the merchants since they come up under the pets menu. Is this why they keep escaping?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military attacks. But are they equipped?
« on: August 30, 2011, 12:06:39 pm »
How can I make sure the members of my military squad are equipped with what they need to fend off invaders? If I just tell the squad randomly to attack something, are they supposed to pick up their equipment first, or do they need to be in active duty/training?
I've gone through and set uniforms to be metal or leather depending on what I have available, as well as individual choice melee. But I've seen them go into battle with cloth and their fists, or wooden training spears when I have like 15 iron spears lying around.

What's going on here?

If I have a an area of terrain littered with gems and stone, but also have workshops, a bed room with beds, cabinets, etc in the same spaces and I want to start a Quantum stockpile, if I select the entire map to mark the stones for dumping, will that affect any highlighted bedrooms/buildings?

42
What the heck? And it says he's drawing a picture of a skeleton.
I swear to [insert dwarven god here] if the child murders someone and becomes a legendary bonecrafter....
I will never stop playing this game.

DF Gameplay Questions / *Spoilers?* About a dead dwarf.
« on: August 22, 2011, 01:45:17 pm »
*spoilers apparently*

I had a dwarf die. Another dumb draw bridge accident. This dwarf wasn't a noble. In fact it was a fairly new migrant. Yet low and behold a their forlorn ghost pops up. So I carve out a small tomb wherein I place the casket assigned to the ghost dwarf plus an engraved memorial slab for said ex-dwarf. I got this message that the ghost "has risen again" or some such. It moved one tile north from its original position. That was it.
I can't get rid of it.

44
If I tell my jeweler to encrust furniture with certain gem types, do they randomly go around encrusting already placed furniture, or only furniture in my furniture stockpiles?

45
I built a draw bridge as a giant door covering the entrance hallway to my fort so that in times of distress I can raise it and keep out trouble. Or... if need be, keep it in. So it can be killed without running away and warning it's elven friends.

As it happens, the draw bridge goes up and my busy little dwarven workers on the outside line up like good and patient little fellows right under the path of the draw bridge waiting for it to come down so that they can enter the fort. Except, if I lower the bridge they all die. I lost my Chief Medical Dwarf that way and then he haunted the place until I made him a nice little tomb with an engraved slab.

The layout is such, where U. is a *raised* Bridge tile, @ are the dwarves, || are the walls, and X marks the spot upon which the bridge falls. ( _. is a blank floor tile )

||_._._._.||
||U.U.U.U||
||X@X@X||<---- You can see my problem. They line up right against it.
