Are Blood Spiders any good for silk farming like vanilla GCSs are? Mine somehow doesn't spit webs on the goblin...

Also, what about the web-spitting ability of Gloomers?

Vanilla dogs fall quite quickly to arrows, and melee weapons. Kobolds can come armed with steel.

also, kobold tiefs avoid traps when stealthing

do they also avoid traps when being chased by a room full of wardogs?

Aye, sadly. Kobolds have a racial [TRAPAVOID] token, so if you rely only on traps and let them steal too many things, the ambush they send will be Fun.

Siege engines fire through fortifications without a problem, but only on the same level.

Roasts will be eaten without even more micromanagement, and that's kind of annoying.

Decorating with high value multiplier stuff (such as unicorn bone :D ) might not be as effective as roasts, but infinitely more dwarven. In my present fort, after various (insert leather-skinned animal here)splosions, I have a room set to draw bone, shell, hoof, ivory, leather, cloth, gems from other stockpiles, plus furniture, plus workshops. Sew leather/cloth image, decorate with bone/shell/ivory, encrust furniture with clear glass, on repeat.

Dwarven syrup roasts.  A masterwork dwarven syrup roast prepared by a legendary cook is worth an obscene amount.

Of course, once you get to that point, there's not much use for money.  It's not hard to produce enough valuable goods to buy out entire caravans every year, even if all you're doing is making rock mugs.  Then what?  If your goal is to accumulate valuable materials, you're going to be limited by the bottleneck of how much the traders can bring you each year.

IIRC invaders, titans and megabeasts have wealth triggers. Architecture, etc wealth isn't good for much else than triggers and happiness in any case.

Think of next year's caravan... it's based on this year's profit. Sell them the axe ;)

I've installed the Fortress Defense II mod, so I get a lot of combinations of invaders and hostiles on my map at the same time. I've never seen any of them engage each other, but I would have thought two nations that were warring wouldn't always unite against their common Dwarven foe. Do sieging and ambushing civs ever attack each other?

Still waiting to see it personally, but civs that start out as trade partners and are attacked by the goblins/others will keep fighting them too, no matter what. So, say, you let the elven caravan be goblin'd one too many times, and they'll send an army thinking you responsible- but that army will also engage any goblins on the map.

I've read some old accounts of webbed cage traps catching dwarves, and there being no way to release the dwarves. Is this still true?

Yup. You can only release them by building the cages as buildings, (b-j, IIRC) connecting them to a lever, and pulling the lever, all before the dwarf dies of thirst, infection or starvation.

Why don't you dig them a bigger room?

Breaking something's bodypart open is a long way from death. I doubt any number of war dogs can inflict more than surface tissue layer injuries to a thing the size of an FB.

The danger, I mean fun of GCSs isn't in their impenetrable chitin or monstrous strenght, they no longer have those. They are dangerous because of their webs, and their toxin: if they catch your dwarves on a trap corridor, shoot web and some of it lands on the traps, much Fun can be had. And if any of their toxin gets into dwarven bloodstream, that Urist is dead in minutes.
