DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:49:50 am »
So, is there a way to fix it so I could use the normal save again?

What buggers me is that it does apparently save somewhere, but I can't find it. Perhaps DFHack has some 'save, NOW' command?

"current" will always be empty. Regeular saves will be in saves\:regionname:

That's the problem- it isn't there. Only the seasonal autosaves appear, the manual saves are nowhere to be found. Quite annoying when I want to save my progress &quit in late season...

Sorry for the noob question, guys, but can you tell me how to save with DFHack enabled? Seasonal saves are all that works, when I try to save normally it disappears into the aether :o Along with several hours of work, unfortunately. The 'current' folder in saves is empty...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Managing All These Badgers
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:16:49 pm »
Actually they're already tame, the 20 or so badgers is including offspring. so no problem there, the trouble lies in figuring out which ones are serving their purpose and the slaughter fodder.

There are symbols next to their names in the z/Animals screen, showing their sex. It'd be a good idea to butcher only males, as along as one is alive there will be babies.

If you are going to go mucking around and modding stuff, it's not a bad idea to add [CAN_LEARN] to pretty much anything that can be a pet or be war trainable. You might get some odd mayors (as though nobles were ever normal anyway), but it gives you some pretty sick combat animals.

And really, a wardog that is a legendary biter, super-dogginly strong, amazingly agile, proud father of 50 pups and doesn't actually have any likes or dislikes or needs is a pretty reasonable mayor by my standards. I've never had one, but now I really, really, really do want one.

You've got a problem? Go talk to the dog.

Or the geese of death.....

Won't it make them unbutcherable, though?

EDIT: somehow, dogs brought from traders came with skills like Mason... :o

IIRC I read on the wiki that caravans base their goods on last year's profit. So if you let them go with a big profit margin, they'll come back with more, hopefully useful, stuff.

Anybody tried this for hunters and woodcutters?

I make a pretty mean pit trap, if I do say so myself, and for goblins I've found that 15 floors is enough to kill and dismember them somewhat. 20-30 will be enough for total pulp. Don't put spikes at the bottom: it will impale them, rather than splattering them.
Putting about 3/7 water on the floor helps with the cleanup, I've found. Falling into harder floors (Iron VS Talc) has no impact.

About that cleanup: is there any way to prevent Miasma after a few gobbos&assorted beasts go splat in that pit? Like, if I build it up to the surface and into a tower, will that work even if there is a bridge halfway down the shaft?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Quarry Bush farming- noob question
« on: August 25, 2011, 09:04:12 am »
They shouldn't eat seeds at all unless they're literally starving. I've never seen a dwarf eat a raw seed. I have seen them hunt and eat vermin while leaving seeds untouched.

Generally true, but sadly, rock nuts are edible even without cooking.

It is highly unlikely that your dwarves are eating all the seeds, unless there is no other source of food available.  Are you sure that's what is happening to the seeds?

They were planted, then the next time I looked they weren't there, and didn't show up in the Kitchen screen either. I haven't seen anyone harvesting them, and I can't find any quarry bush products in my stockpiles... I know it's got to be processed somehow, but I can't even find the crop.

DF Gameplay Questions / Quarry Bush farming- noob question
« on: August 25, 2011, 07:01:24 am »
I've repeatedly tried setting up quarry bush plantations, but my dwarves always eat all the seed after one harvest. How do I forbid them from doing so, but keep allowing the farmers to handle the nuts? Probably some use of the Forbid function that still eludes me... if I forbid it in my stocks, will the farmers still plant, harvest, and deposit it to seed storage?

For the carp jamming, build wall grates in front of the floodgates.

That means a civilization of cave people killed the forgotten beast for you off-screen. I think this makes them friendly now but I'm not sure.

As far as i know only the beast person that killed the FB turns friendly.

If theyre still alive i recommend capturing the friendly ones and bring them up to live with your dwarves

With adequate measures taken against contamination- those cavemen might be suffering from FB syndrome.

Another modding question: I have erased the [ADOPTS OWNER] creature tags of my cats in the saved game folder, and on the [z] / Animals screen, all pet cats turned into unavailable and butcherable... while retaining their names. Would their death still sadden their one time dwarven slaves, who are now apparently free of them?
