DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tree Farming
« on: September 20, 2011, 02:22:24 pm »
I want to make a underground tree farm, what is the best way? Should i make it in mud or what?

If you have any soil layers, the easiest would be just to hollow out a big room with soil floors (make sure sunlight never touches it, or it'll permanently only grow surface plants).  Once you breach a cavern that contains cave fungus, spores will start growing the treelike cavern mushrooms all over the undergorund soil.

Supposedly you can use cave-ins to move blocks of soil down to a lower level if it's more convenient, but keep in mind the whole "Once exposed to sunlight, always exposed to sunlight" rule.

407
AND NOW!  I continue work on my tunnel down into the second cavern area.  Once I find it, I'll see if there's anything for my dwarves to kill to level up their skill, then shut it off with a closed bridge and keep digging down-- same with the third level of caverns, all the way until I reach the magma region.
Nope!  That one area had a nearly perfect serene zone, with woodlands, soil, deep and shallow metals, no aquifer, and flux.  I set a note down and then built a camp somewhere else then abandoned it to save the reference for later.

Do note that flux is buggy when displayed on the embark screen; there may actually be flux there even if it's not listed.  If you use 'f' for a search of a suitable site (very useful) and set it to look for sites with flux, the site finder will always accurately show you sites with flux, even if it's not listed.

If you want to get super nitpicky (liek a true dwarf) you can use Advanced World Generation to fiddle with how likely a serene spot is to show up, among other fun stuff.
I did use the find function.

Ah, nevermind then.  Just as well, since it appears that I misread your post in the first place  :P  Keep digging!

See you say that now, but I'll bet the moment you get to a funeral, wedding, or speech to elementary school students about the values of friendship you bail.

Considering that my most recent wedding speech involved 5 minutes of me comparing their marriage to a "bowl of awesome," all ad-libbed, I'd say my response would have to be

P.S. The first thing that comes to mind of me giving advice to elementary school kids is when I told one they should "Run into the middle of the street," just before getting elbowed by the person next to me.

Which tool of the DFhack can I use for that?

For the new version, I believe it would be:
'clearowned' - removes ownership of claimed items, solving problems with worn clothing and military starving out the fort.

Although I've only ever used the old version that was packaged with the Lazy Newb Pack.  In that case I would go to the DFHack folder manuualy and run something like "dfconsfiscate.bat"

The readme will probably explain it better for the new version.

I agree with the don't play into it.  Honestly the discussion has been had countless times.  Both games are, IMO, great but to discuss them and compare them is pointless as the games themselves, and circumstances surrounding the games, are completely different.

However, because I simply cannot resist, to play Minecraft I had to pay for it, real live money, and that implies a certain degree of responsibility on the creator to follow up on their promises (not that countless game developers haven't of course.. MoO3.. Breaker of Hearts).  To play Dwarf Fortress you simply have to download it and play it, costs you nothing, zero.  Now of course this doesn't mean you don't have the right to comment or heck even complain about it, if people didn't there would be no feedback to make changes to the game that can take it to better places.

That said once its clear what you want either isn't happening (*cough*urinefeces*cough*) or what you want isn't happening any time soon (sadly, the Army arc, which I too am looking forward to more than anything else on the table) you can either accept it and move on or stop playing and come back later when it is done.  You have no right to complain beyond that point, it becomes disrespectful and useless.

Your post laid down some phat wisdom.  That said, my main takeaway from it is that (*cough*urinefeces*cough*) should be a standard self-interruption, regardless of context(*cough*urinefeces*cough*) .

4 questions:

1- Can a dwarf use a battle axe and a shield without being penalised ?
2- Is it possible to channel down though several z-level without having to dig a up:down stair case besides?
3- I have some goblin equipment in the main corridor of my fortress (near of the entry) that my dwarves would never pick up, either for storing or dumping them. They are not forbidden. I have the same issue with some other items in the fortress (a bed, a bucket and some more...)
4- there is a wall tile that my dwarves refuse to smooth. Its position is as follow:
Code: [Select]

s s u
    s
    s
where the s's are the smoothed walls and the u is the unsmoothed wall.

Thank you!

Just as Sphalerite says.  For trivia purposes, the only negative effect of equipping an axe and shield that I know of would be that the extra weight of the shield will slow you down (by a very, very small amount), though this can be negated by increasing your Shield User skill.  Ditto for armour.

If you become fed up with owned items (since it can be a real pain), you can always cheat and use DFHack to confiscate/dump/delete them (Also came with Lazy Newb Pack)

I thought my three-tailed vomit hummingbird was a joke.  Until it snuck in through a drainage grate somehow and proceeded to spew frozen hummingbird vomit all over my furniture stockpiles.  Numbing vomit is still there a decade later.

Anyway I'd heard rumours of "Good" Titans or FBs, that.. .exude love and friendship or something.  Is... is that a real thing?  Or am I confusing something from that My Little Fortress mod?
They're real.

And they're gonna befriend your head off.

I see... And how would one increase the liklihood of meeting one of them, for... friendship purposes?

True science, mad science, ended in the later 50's.
Yeah...

But then Aperture started in the 60's, which is the only exception. Lobotomies? HELL YEAH

ALL HAIL ‼SCIENCE‼

Ah, but see, you're forgetting that

EDIT: added spoilertag

I'm expecting someone to mod in a crematorium immediately, which takes your common un-butherables like goblins and elves, and destroys the corpse
I don't think you understood what I meant...

Urist McCleaver cancelled Butcher Corpse: Interrupted by Corpse.

Don't some mods already have crematoriums in them?

Hm.  I hope indeed that smooth walls can hold back tunneling invaders.  Or at least a water magma moat.

Even better, move your fortress to the bottom of the magma sea. Lets see the invaders tunnel through that.

A Goblin Bucket Brigade!  Curse them!

Not at all, [LIGHT_GEN] cats that are immune to AIDS syndromes would be perfect for fighting forgotten beasts. Super soldiering them would make them even more efficient.

I might have to mod that in. :)

Out of curiosity, what does [LIGHT_GEN] do?  Is it only useful in adventurer mode at night?

The other problem with necromancers is raising all the carp / badgers / gorlaks that naturally die over the map without your knowledge.
