DF Suggestions / Pool of Molten Metal
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:49:47 pm »
When a copper helmet, say, is melted in magma, it turns into a pool of molten copper. What would be cool, in my opinion, would be if it dried into a copper bar.

Just a small suggestion, and I searched but couldn't find any topics like this, sorry if there were.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dorfpocalypse

The idea of this is to post pictures/ stories about THE lever.

Here's a pic, of my newly built magma flooding device.

First pulled, coincidentally, right as the elven caravan arrived.

DF Gameplay Questions / Magma and visibility
« on: January 09, 2012, 10:36:43 pm »
What will resist magma but still allow an animal to see through it?

For example:
Code: [Select]
=m=
=?=
=a=
===

= is a wall, m -s magma, and what should I put in ?

The reason I need this is because the magma isn't always there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Shallow Worlds
« on: January 08, 2012, 10:33:26 pm »
What parameter should I change in Advanced World Gen to create a shallow world? With something like 25 zs between the surface and the magma sea.

Thanks

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Another FB thread

Don't you just love all these FB threads? (And artifact threads, of course)

But here is a devil. Really, a fortress destroying devil.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Moats?
« on: December 14, 2011, 12:25:26 am »
You want a moat? I'll give you a moat. Mission: build a fort surrounded COMPLETELY by water.
Status: Complete.

I have created a fort, balanced upon one support, linked to a lever. On all sides it is covered in water.  The catch? There are two levers. One drains the doom moat, the other drops the entire fortress.

General Discussion / Book Recomendations
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:51:44 pm »
I did it again: I'm out of books to read. I need help finding a good book to read.

My tastes:
I like fantasy. I like Garth Nix, Shadows of the Apt, all kinds of things like that. Right now I am not in the mood for really Lord of the Ringsy books, but something with more innovation. Perhaps one of those books where someone from this world goes to another would be good.
Thank you in advance.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help Finding an Embark
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:39:57 pm »
No matter how many times I gen and regen, I can never seem to get A Joyous Wilds on an ocean. Ideally, it would have a fair amount of beasts, metals, and some flux, but the important thing is really a Joyous Wilds coast. Thanks in advance.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A Challenge
« on: November 16, 2011, 12:03:06 pm »
Bay12ers, I have a challenge for you. Can you think of anything that CANNOT be weaponized? After thinking of a weaponization method, think up some other seemingly peaceful thing.
I shall go first:

Migrants

What is the most expensive fort you've had?

My current best is doing pretty well: Nearly 25 Million DB

Currently having a few magma mishaps... But that is to be expected.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pyrite? Here? [spoilers]
« on: November 11, 2011, 12:49:33 pm »
I was digging out a candy vein, when I hit something. Pyrite. Right in the middle of all this candy, this low value gem. Is this normal, or a bug?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DANGER rooms
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:04:07 pm »
Many people don't use danger rooms on the grounds that they train too fast. I have made a way to make them slightly less exploity: namely, make pits on either side. This still trains faster than non-danger room training, while still not creating instant super-soldiers.

Code: [Select]

 l+l
l./.l
 l+l
 l+l
key: l is a wall, + is the floor, / is the upright spike, and . is the pit.

To increase the injury of your dwarves, you can put all sorts of fun things at the bottom of the pits, in addition to adjusting the height of pit. Because even a drop of 1 z will stun a dwarf, you can make use of weapon traps at the bottom, or even combine it with a swimming pool. This also slows down training speed. Your dwarves will have to walk back up to the training room. You can adjust the length of the passage back up for ideal training speed. This design still trains up to adequate or so quite fast; the higher level a dodger any given dwarf is, the more often it jumps into a pit.

List of reasons to use this
1. Decreasing skill gains
2. Can put the 'Danger' in danger room
3. Is far faster than normal training
4. Gives player high degree of control over the process

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Vomit trap
« on: October 08, 2011, 12:07:51 am »
My dream is to create an open-air room above my entrance. The floor will be covered in hatches (over grates). Through use of burrows, I shall get my dwarves to go there periodically to vomit. When the seige comes, a pull of a lever and vomit on their heads. How do I encourage cave adaption?

I will commence work sometime this weekend.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Accursed badgers
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:50:40 pm »
After I embarked, a badger immediately set upon my dwarves, killing one and wounding 3 others. However, my fortress survived, and I thought I was safe. I had modded in catdragons (basically domestic dragons), and a migrant arrived with one as a pet. The badger leapt onto it and ripped its throat out. It basically killed a dragon. What are your worst / funniest experiences with badgers?
