DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: anyone ever survive indefinitely?

(A logic decision is profoundly more computationally expensive than a math operation!)

Why is this? I would have expected using a bool to be extremely fast.

Does the game not recognize which way your character is facing? I'm pretty sure it does that in combat. Could it be programmed so that when your character is not facing the weeping angels, the angels can attack?

I'm pretty sure the new release will.

Creative Projects / Simulating a ship
« on: June 23, 2013, 06:07:08 pm »
EDIT
Solved. I figured it out elsewhere. Keels can transfer diagonal to horizontal force, so I can just calculate the wind force based on the angle between the wind and the sail. Now locking thread.

OP:
I am currently trying to accurately simulate a square-rigged sailing ship. There is only one sail, just about right in the middle of the ship. The goal: to calculate the speed and heading (I think that's the term) of the ship.

The way I see it, there are 4 relevant things.
a) Wind - a vector I suppose
b) Sail - just an angle between -45 to 45, relative to the keel. 0 is perpendicular to the keel.
c) Keel - an angle
d) Rudder - an angle between -45 and 45, relative to the keel. 0 is in line with the keel.

I think that the heading is based only on the rudder. The speed is would be based on the wind hitting the sail, but only on the axis of the keel.

How do I calculate speed and heading?

I do most of my coding in Unity. Your project sounds fairly hard. That said, I'm sure you'll learn lots of interesting things in the process, so it's worth trying even if an end product is unlikely.

The real enemies are boredom and FPS. Walling yourself in isn't too hard. You can also have a vampire locked in a 1x1 wall somewhere, and you'll survive nearly forever (ghosts)

I assume you mean forcing 50% of all goods to be dumped into a noble's room?

You could probably do something like that with minecarts fairly easily. In the farm area, create 2 stockpiles, one to go to the noble and one to go to the commonry. Have each pile be hooked up to a minecart going to the right place.

Toady is putting in a bunch more stuff about vision in the new release. Hopefully that will at least make Weeping Angels closer to possible.

Make a minecart gun that shoots booze barrels.

It doesn't happen with the puppies, so I assume it is a bug with riding the cart.

Have you tried launching a caged dwarf as a test?

41
You should be able to triangulate for a general area like this:
Code: [Select]
^XXX~~
^ is a pressure plate linked to the firing mechanism for the area. Each X is a floodgate, each linked to one animal trigger plate. ~ is water, released when all three animals in the area see an enemy and trigger their plates.

42
So for AA we need to make a 5x5 block of mine carts in sync, I take it a 5 long line of launchers with a rapid succession of 5 mine carts each would work?

For launching a rapid succession of minecarts, you can have a bunch stacked up over a roller.

Code: [Select]
M
M
r         r is a roller, and the Ms are minecarts stacked over it.

When the roller is turned on, the bottom minecart is sped up onto the launching device. The second minecart falls onto the roller and is accelerated as well. One should be able to stack as many minecarts as necessary.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Miners stuck in a hole

Okay, just to check the obvious issues.

1. Burrows. Do you have them at all?
2. Do the stuck miners have picks?
3. Do the other miners outside have picks?
4. Can the miners access the area designated for digging?
5. Are there ramps nearby that could be causing issues?
