General Discussion / Bay12 Lower Boards IRC
« on: April 22, 2017, 11:44:56 am »
Hello all! This is just a friendly reminder that there exists a Bay12 Lower Boards IRC channel for random chatting.

The server info is:

Quote
Server: irc.darkmyst.org
Channel: #bay12lb

If you don't know how to use IRC, it's quite easy! Simply get an IRC program (HexChat or XChat), find the part that has servers and input the info, then pick a username and hop in.

There's a couple rules for #bay12lb.

1 - Don't be rude
2 - Remember, kicking just means "cool down." If you get banned, though, that means someone doesn't like you.
3 - No risque stuff in channel, especially while Wrex is on. Remember, private messages (PMs) are a thing.
4 - Don't be rude

List of ops:

Sky (that's me)
Wrex
Darvi

Remember... IRC never dies!

Haeum Sung

NOTE: for times, please fill out the survey!!

Roughly a hundred years ago, a powerful Evil cleric cast a single spell that wiped out a good part of this world's humanoid population. This cataclysmic event, named rather uncreatively the Calamity, ripped the souls from most of the unfortunate victims' bodies, creating the "soul fog" that even now blankets the world and blots out the sun. The bodies left behind were reanimated into undead, and those who were not caught in the initial casting of the spell were now being hunted by the corpses of those who had. Many flocked to the few fortified cities that were left untouched by the Calamity, including Haeum Sung, forming its incredibly racially diverse population of today: perhaps two million individuals, from elves to goblins to humans to kobolds to orcs. Haeum Sung is a mega-city of tens of levels of streets and buildings built on top of each other. It is kept running by the constant efforts of administrators, wizards, alchemists and oracles who toil to make the city self-sufficient. Protected by its immense runestone walls from the undead of the post-Calamity world, it stands as one of the few bastions of civilization that remain. While most citizens are perfectly fine with living inside the safe walls of Haeum Sung, there are many reasons to go on brief trips outside the wall. You are one member of one of the groups of adventurers that brave the outside world, hired by the government of Haeum Sung. The ruler of Haeum Sung, Tian Ranxi, has summoned your group to the Capstone for a non-urgent mission.

Rules and stuff
- The system is Pathfinder
- Starting level is 7
- As you have been working for Haeum Sung for a while now, you are fairly well-off. Starting gold is 50000 gp, but are forbidden from spending more than 20000gp on one item.
- You are not allowed to be a: wizard, cleric, druid witch, shaman, arcanist.
- If you wish to be a martial with no spellcasting, I highly recommend picking a Path of War class such as Stalker, Warder or Warlord. Maneuvers are really fun!
- The entire outside world is undead, so keep that in mind.
- One minor houserule: intelligent undead are not blanket immune to spells such as Charm or illusions.
- Take maximum HP for all levels.
- No alignment restrictions.
- 25 point buy.

- I hope to have four players... I might have to cancel the game if there isn't enough people.

- Here's a survey to determine ideal game time. I am in the Korea/Chinese timezone, so unfortunately it will be quite difficult for, say, East Coast US people to participate at comfortable times. Sorry :( I aim to start each session at a time between 8pm Korea time, and each session should be 3 hours.
- Games will be played at regular times on Roll20.

Haeum Sung, a brief overview
Haeum Sung is an extremely dense city of two main areas, Haeum Sung East and Haeum Sung West. East and West are separated by the same kind of wall that separates the city from the outside.

Though there are many layers of streets and buildings, they can be roughly divided into three vertical districts.
Haeum Sung East
This is the "downtown" of Haeum Sung. Most important guilds are located here.
Sky District: Features of note are some wealthy residences, the mage school (Jadean Academy), the ruler's home/administrative building (the Capstone), and the Water Feed where all new water is introduced into the vast waterworks of Haeum Sung via repeated castings of Create Water.

People District: Homes and the bards' guild and alchemy guild, the Yeongeum Won.

Earth District: The lowest district. It has many stores and workshops, alchemical factories and a few miracle farms.

Haeum Sung West
Haeum Sung West is mostly homes and miracle farms as well as some orchards. There is also the Six Soldiers Military Academy in the People district.

The gates
There are five gates to Haeum Sung. The first "gate" is the teleport pad in the People District in Haeum Sung East. It also has the north, south and east gates. West has the western gate. Each gate is guarded by Gate Guards, who are well-equipped with full plate armor, masterwork halberds, maces and sometimes crossbows. Visitors must walk through an Anti-Magic Field before being inspected for disease contracted from the outside. The AMF is intended to prevent any intelligent undead from casting a disguise spell on them to sneak into Haeum Sung.

Unlike the Gate Guards, the Internal Guards who keep the peace in the street wear chain mail, leather armor and have spears, sometimes bows.

Soul fog: A worldwide mist of amalgamated souls, the soul fog is perhaps one of the more eerie results of the Calamity. Not only does the soul fog darken the sun during the day to "slightly brighter than during a thunderstorm," it seems to somehow weaken the connection the divine gods have on the world. Post-Calamity, there have been no reports of clerics successfully communing with their gods, nor that of new clerics being found. Strangely, other divine servants such as Paladins, as well as channelers of divine energies such as Oracles remain.
Careful experimentation by alchemists from Haeum Sung's Yeungeum Won has determined that departed souls do not go to the afterlife as usual, but instead are captured by the soul fog. As if this was not incentive enough for most citizens to stay inside Haeum Sung's walls, when the fog descends upon the earth at night people report hearing whispers barely audible, which then disappear when one tries to listen to what they say.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Pokemon Tabletop United opinions?
« on: July 01, 2016, 11:52:35 pm »
I kinda want to run a PTU game, but I have no idea how the system works. Has anyone here ran or played a PTU game? How was it?

I remember hearing from someone that PTA/U games are a loooot of effort for the GM to run, but I have no concrete reviews to go off of.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / D&D 3.5e: The Librarian's Tomb
« on: March 11, 2016, 02:08:51 pm »
The Librarian's Tomb

tldr: 3.5e, lots of spell scrolls, no primary casters, roll20

The musty smell of the labyrinthine Tomb fills the air, as your ragtag band of adventurers stumble into the next room. Like all the ones before it, it is paved floor to ceiling with carefully hewn, polished and mortared slabs of some smooth, pale blue rock. Following a rumor that the Librarian's Tomb had an endless bounty of magic scrolls, if only you were brave enough to take them as your own, you four have entered the Tomb some days ago. You quickly discovered, though, that the Librarian of ages past has ensured that not anyone can rob her Tomb: the exit magically sealed itself as you entered. Running low on supplies, your only hope is to survive the various monsters that infest the Tomb, acquire valuable scrolls, and to find the central exit.

An affluent future awaits you... if you live, that is.

Rules and stuff

The inspiration for this game came from my love of spells, mostly. I downloaded a database of most major spells from the various sourcebooks and wrote a script that generates random ones picked from them. Many of the rooms of the Tomb are home to piles and piles of magical scrolls, ranging from Prestidigation, Five Uses, to Dimension Door, all the way up to Mass Invisibility. There are also divine scrolls, and sometimes even scrolls that aren't even for magic, per se (Fiendish Quickening, anyone?). Unfortunately, none of you thought to bring a proper mage or cleric along with you. That means that Use Magic Device may often be the only way to actually use those spell scrolls.

Some basic rules:
D&D 3.5e
Lv 5 start
No primary spellcasters: Wizards, clerics, druids, whatever! None of you are full spellcasters.
28 point buy: helpful calculator
Format: Either irc or roll20. It will be a short adventure. Not entirely sure about the time yet. Currently thinking of one of Sun/Sat, starting sometime between 5pm or 9pm China time. Please post time suggestions!
Characters: Not first come first serve.

Other Games / Minecraft Infinity testing

Hello everyone!

Can someone with FTB Infinity try to connect to my server (which is in Korea) at www.screamingpotato.com:60001 and see if it's playable from wherever you are? It would also be helpful to note the ping, too.

Infinity takes forever to spool up, of course, so I imagine it'd be too much of a hassle for many people D:

Roll To Dodge / EXTREME FARMING SIMULATOR and herbs on the side

EXTREME FARMING SIMULATOR
----

Strike the earth! Everyone's heard that old phrase at least once. Countless farmers since the first farmer to ever farm has done so, and not once has the earth struck back.

But the evil archmage Archie, shortly before being dispatched by a crack team of three people wielding sharp sticks of various designs and a perpetually annoyed cleric, cast a pretty strong curse on the Earth itself.

It wasn't even an evil curse, really. It just gave it sentience ("The Curse of Sentience," which five out of five wizards rate as second-worst-named-spell-ever, closely followed by the "The Wriggle Spell," which actually causes a sensation of tickling shortly followed by severe death). And sentient creatures tend not to appreciate being scratched with metal blades, having roots grow in it, and constantly being dug through in search of minerals.  So the earth struck back! And before you know it, half the world is starving and/or participating in hunter-and-gatherer lifestyles. It was doubtlessly humanity's darkest hour.

This is where you come in! Armed with the latest* herbology knowledge, and incredible farming skils** to boot, you feel determined... determined to grow the mystical-but-also-quite-lost Herb of Lilianne, and put the Earth to rest once and for all!

But first, what is your name?
> My name is ...

Life Advice / I want pretty handwriting :(
« on: November 01, 2015, 10:06:50 am »
Hi all,

Is there any way to get actually neat pretty handwriting...? I've tried writing slower and paying more attention, but all that does is make my handwriting more legible. It doesn't actually look neat, because the same letter in one word to the next looks a liiittle bit different and placed slightly higher or lower, or stuff like that. I always feel so jealous of my friends who have so neat writing...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Bay12 Census/Survey: Processing results
« on: May 08, 2015, 10:40:58 am »
This is the second unofficial census for Bay12, found here.

The survey is planned to run from May 9th to May 16th, and a summary of results posted at a later date.

I hope to make a somewhat interactive results page, but no promises. Since this is a second survey, it may be interesting to see how the demographics of Bay12 changed, if it changed, between the two years.

While I can't enforce anything, I would greatly appreciate it if you don't submit multiple results, or submit joke answers, or submit multiple joke answers. All answers are anonymous, and while it might be possible to piece together who is who by looking at the results, I promise you that (1) identifiable information will not be published publically, ever (2) I don't care who is who.

Thanks for answering!

Survey live!

The last time I ran an informal Bay12 census I created all of the questions on my own. I soon realized that I actually wanted a lot of more questions and some of the questions were ambiguous. So this time around I will open a discussion on which questions to include, and how to run the census in general.

The last census ran for 5 days; perhaps this one should have set start and finish dates?

Last time, these were the questions (and this is a link to the results):

1. What is your birthday? [frequency graph--should make it a bar graph next time]
2. What is your age? [curve--again, should be a bar graph]
3. Where do you live? [area map--should be a "population map" with circles on nations, probably]
4. Country of origin? [same as 3]
5. Have you ever played a ToadyOne game? [pie chart]
6. Have you ever played a non-DF ToadyOne game? [pie chart]
7. Which boards do you go to? [bar graph]
8. Have you accepted Tarn Adams as your lord and saviour? [pie chart]
9. What degree of education do you plan on completing? [pie chart]
10. What languages are you fluent in? [bar graph]
11. Preferred OS? [pie chart]
12. Are you clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder? [pie chart]
13. How fast is your internet? [line]
14. How would you rate your political inclination? [bar graph]
15. What is your employment status? [pie chart]
16. What gender do you identify as? [pie chart]
17. Cats or dogs? [pie chart]
18. How much time do you spend on Bay12 every day? [line -- possibly should be bar graph]

My initial thoughts are:

14 should be deleted, 16 should be split into two questions: gender (male, female) and inclination (hetero, homo, fluid, bi, etc). Perhaps a follow-up question to 12 would be interesting, called 12b and asking which kind(s) of mental disorders in broad strokes, eg Depression/ADHD/Schizophrenia. I am concerned that this would feel too privacy-invading though, even if all questions are optional.

What other questions could be included, and should some questions be reworded?

also: This time around I might put the results on an interactive javascript page.

Life Advice / Solving connection issues
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:59:08 am »
Recently, I have been having tons of dropped packets to the bay12 minecraft server occassionally, from 20 to 60% at times.

Spoiler: tracert (click to show/hide)

Tracert seems to tell me that the 10th path it used to get to the server has a timeout (that's what the korean says, btw--request has timed out). Is it possible to figure out which path this is then blacklist it somehow? :/

Excerpt from speech to the United Provinces of Earth, 2775

"... First, I believe that humanity should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this millenium is out, of landing a man on Alpha Centauri ..."

The United Earth's leader's speech roused the entire world into a space fervor, prompting billions of credits to be poured into its space fleet. Four provinces were elected to receive a quarter each of these unlimited funds and pioneer the conquest of the stars. Each province uses its budget where it sees fit, but technological advances are shared. Facilities are not, though they may be loaned, and ships are owned by a province. This four province system was set up under the belief that competition would spur innovation and the weeding out of the inept. Therefore, each province's performance is reviewed every decade. If a province has not performed well compared to its peers, it may be relieved of command, and a new province appointed.

After half a decade of intense research, three prototype ships are ready for production. The spacedocks and orbital factories are no longer brand new, but that is not a bad thing, because with age comes experience.

Come, leader, and let us conquer the stars!

Life Advice / My computer is acting up!
« on: October 05, 2014, 08:59:39 am »
Some sites just don't work--sometimes it's google that doesn't work, or github, or imgur, or a random diffchecker.com site.

This happens across all of my browsers (Dragon, Chrome, IE, Firefox) but strangely enough not on my phone, which is connected to Wifi, which is produced from the same internet connection as my PC's.

I happen to use Windows 7.

Running a computer scan via Malwarebytes didn't fix the issue. Also, this problem is generic enough that none of the google results are helpful.

Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this problem? :(

edit: and now they randomly work for Chrome but not for Dragon. What the heck?

Life Advice / Need a new graphics card :I
« on: July 08, 2014, 03:49:11 am »
But I don't have any idea how you choose a new graphics card. >_> Something about your PCU not supporting the power needed? My current one is 4 or 5 years old and it cannot run Planetside 2 on medium settings, which is kinda important because one of the in-game classes aren't very visible with "Graphics Quality" on Low. I'm reasonably sure it's a GPU limit, because my CPU is pretty much top-notch (i7 3.4 GHz) and I have heaps of ram :(

Any help?
