"Gotta go with the Prez here. 'Sides, we can always grab some sushi later."

1187
Rin looks between Todoroki and Daisuke.
"Don't hurt him too badly, okay?"
"He looks pretty tough, He'll be fine. Well...I won't hurt him too bad. Can't guarantee Madoka here won't. Pretty sure her sword hand's twitchin'."

Then Kaori returns.
"O-oh? U-um....well....Kaori, uh....this is Todoroki and his friend Madoka. They, uh....decided to eat with us! And fight Daisuke, I guess."

For a moment, a mere moment, the soldiers notice Miyako getting closer. They pay her no heed; maybe she was a beggar, looking for alms, or a curious onlooker. After all, imperial soldiers didn't often make their way around Kamihama; that was the city guard's job.

Then all hell broke loose.

Lightning sparks through the air as Miyako unleashes her Gnosis, a blinding halo dazzling the guards and deafening them. Setsurou follows closely, his dog-like form vanishing in a whirl of ice and snow as he emerged, a miniature blizzard blinding sight, and Traxesa's winds knocking people aside.

"D-dammit! Gnosis users! S-stand close!"

Yusuke, of course, was disorientated by the bursts.  He stumbles about, still tied up in his manacles, trying to latch on to something, anything familiar he could ground himself in.

Then he hears Setsurou's voice, and realises, immediately, what was going on.

And just how much trouble he would be in if he didn't immediately get with the program.
"...right, got you."

He reached deep down, pulling on that thread he could feel in his mind. Ordinarily, he hated this feeling; though it wasn't exactly common for a Cursed to love their Cursed forms, the Cat hated his the most, for what it meant. Usually, that thread would unravel itself. It wasn't really a thread; Yusuke didn't know how to describe it, but it was a feeling of impending change, a strange, queer feeling that signalled the loss of his human form, at least for a while.

Today, however...

"Damn it....screw it, I gotta do this."

He closed his eyes, and pulled.

A puff of orange dust, and Yusuke's clothes fell to the ground, along with the manacles clattering to the ground, as an orange cat was left in his place, scampering on the ground towards Setsurou.

In the confusion, however, a guard swiped blindly at Yusuke, his hands almost scooping up the cat. Yusuke leapt backwards, speaking almost instinctively.
"Damn it, out of the way!"
Oh, crap.

The guards could hear him now. They were still recovering their vision, but given Yusuke was a bright orange cat at the moment, he wasn't exactly hard to spot.

The first guards to recover formed a line between him and Setsurou, herding him back away. Yusuke turned tail and sprinted into an alleyway, running away from the guards.

"...he's a Cursed?! Damn it. They're real after all. After him! For the Empress!"

The strange woman sighs.
"I'll be upfront with you, I haven't got much. I'm...well, what you'd call a foreigner to these parts, and I need help. I suppose what you'd say I am is a shipwreck survivor, and I need parts to repair my craft, but...well, parts cost money, and money means adventures. I got some money on me, and I can afford to pay, but....well, it's not much, like I said. And....well, I'd show you but....it wouldn't really mean much outside of a fight, ironically. Clairvoyance, I think, is the word for it around here."

1188
Nico sighs, resting against a lamppost. The night was wearing even on her.
"How are you guys holding up? I'm....getting a little beat myself, after all this."

1189
"Well, uh...."
"If this means the end of the war, then....I suppose....well, Belphegor will go on running her business, like she always has. Lucifer will....well, who knows what he'll do, and probably drag Asmodeus and Satan along for the ride. Beelzebub....I don't even know where they are. I....well, I suppose I'll try to become a teacher like I've always wanted....."
"....what I'm really concerned about is how Mammon and Leviathan might take it. They....well...they weren't always like that."

1190
Professor Greyhame studies the men on the ground, looking between them, Orrel and Reeve, before strolling over and picking up the remaining conscious man, a red welt on his head where Orrel struck him with a fan and picking him up by the scruff of his neck like an errant cat.

The Kuriyama man seems to recognise the old warrior and cringes.
"P-Professor? Professor Greyhame? S-sir! Don't hurt me! I swear, I wasn't...."
"....Takeru, I see. I am disappointed. I'd thought you were better than this. Top of your class, too."

He turns to the students.
"I'll handle these invaders. Professor Estelle should be here shortly. You children, get some rest. You deserve it"

1191
"Let's give 'em something to chew on. Can't let the prez do all the work."
Azusa packs a Baseball Bat (Steel Sword) and promotes to Dancer.

1192
Spring an ambush and box the stuffing out of Outrider B

1193
Rin frowns at Daisuke.
"Are you sure you'll be okay? I mean, I know you will be, but are you sure?"
"A real charmer, ain't he? Ya know, someone might be thinking yer overcompensatin' with two swords."
Then the twins.
"That, I can understand. Me and Madoka here are what ya'd call wanderin' duelists. Not exactly the most rewardin' of occupations, so we gotta take odd jobs like killing Shiryo and doin' escorts. Ya know, that sorta thing. Still, last job gave us a bit extra, so I think we can afford a bit of fanciness. Though Madoka here might lose her mind if we keep yappin' without fightin'."

Soldiers begin to round the corner, yelling at people to get out of the way.
"Clear a path! Clear a path! We are on imperial business! Stand clear!"

There are at least four, maybe six soldiers in a small square, and one ahead and one behind, armed with spears. Within the larger group of troops, Yusuke can be seen, his hands chained in tight, heavy manacles, visibly straining against his captivity, but to no avail.

"....""

The strange woman taps her chin thoughtfully, puzzling out what, exactly, to say.
"Well, uh...what I'm looking to recruit for is a small adventuring team. You know, the usual sorta deal. We head out, we find a bounty, we split the bounty and all goes well. I'm....not exactly a good fighter, but I got some skills and I really need the cash. I'm willing to split it, of course."

1194
"A man who likes a good meal AND a fight. After my own heart."
Todoroki lets out a hearty laugh.
"And a bunch of Izumites, huh? Pretty fancy dress, too. Guess you two must be some down-on-yer-luck merchants or somethin'."
"W-wait, is he offering to pay? No, I insist. I'll pay for our food."
Todoroki lifts an eyebrow at Rin, sizing her up.
"....those robes....yer one of those Mizuno healers, right? Travels around, heals people, gives medicines out? Great, good, nice to patch people up after our duel."
Rin starts flailing again, at the idea of a duel.
"W-what? Wait, you guys can't fight! People'll get hurt in here and the owners might get mad and-!"
"Relax, girlie, it's only a friendly spar. 'Sides, yer friend here agreed, didn't he?"

Taiga, Miyako and Setsurou
The Cat is getting closer. The crowd seems to be moving out of the way and the sound of moving boots on stone can be heard.

You got two minutes to prepare.

The strange woman finds herself accosted by not one, but three people. She seems rather relieved.
"Oh! Um....you guys are....okay to help me out with something? Thank the Maker. Okay. I'm, uh....recruiting."

1195
"Trade stories, huh? I, for one, think ya look more like a man who'd like to exchange some blows, a little test of yer mettle to shake of the rust. A friendly duel. 'Course, we should eat first if yer down for it. It'll be on me. If yer not, of course, I'm down for a good drink and a story. Either's good with me."
Todoroki shrugs as if he'd just offered to challenge Daisuke to a game of Go. His good eye drifts over to the two twins he'd noticed earlier, too.
"Hey. I could hear yer stomachs rumbling all the way over there. Ya want in or not? It's a little rude to stare."

Rin blushes, looking away.
"I-it's nothing, really! It's just...my mom always said, you know, if you don't watch out for the little guy, who will, right? It's.....I don't know why I'm saying this, ehehe. You probably don't care all that much."

Taiga, Miyako and Setsurou
Five minutes have passed. The sounds of the city continue to grow louder as the day passes. The nearest Cursed, you can sense, is now the Cat; Yusuke's convoy is getting closer and closer.

Your time is approaching.

Torajirou, Haru and Takeru
As you sit by, watching the excitement, you three are distinctly aware of some strange person approaching people from your caravan and getting brushed off in turn.

She appears to be a woman, probably about twenty years of age by certain reckonings. Her hair is blonde and her features are not of any recognisable group here; not Avropan, not Five Kingdomer, and from nowhere else you know. Her clothes are also odd; if they're some Avropan fashion, they're not one you recognise.

You sense something off about her; not hostile, not intending evil, but not quite fitting.
"H-hey? Excuse me, would you....no? Okay, that's fine, but....hey! Excuse me, could you point me to-hey, do you mind?"

1196
"Okay, we should....wait for Kaori to come back with some food, we chow down and we get searching again. It's a new day. We'll find whoever sent that letter today. I'm sure of it!"

Todoroki simply waved a hand back.
"Well, since ya asked. Todoroki Guren, a pleasure to meet'cha. Me and Madoka here are travelling swordsmen. I'd say we fancy ourselves pretty good at what we do."

1197
"I should really go back to check on Miss Shiraishi, but...."
Rin refers back to the mysterious letter that had brought her here to begin with.

My friend needs help. His illness is difficult to cure, and has plagued him since birth. We have tried doctors, alchemists and everything else. If anyone can heal him, maybe one of you can. This is our last resort. Please send anyone you can.

Please, come to Kamihama, and present the badge with this to the right people. We will know how to find you.

-Signed,
K. N.

Rin still recalled her adoptive father counselling her against answering the letter. She reminded him, gently, that she had already been worse places, and in any case, it was the duty of a Mizuno healer to help others when asked. There was just....something about this that made her feel she needed to go chase this, whatever it was.

She pulled out the small seal that had come with the letter, a small badge embossed with the calendar animals. The Juunishi, whose stories she'd grown up with.
"...we should look around at any hospitals in the area, if they recognise this badge. They really didn't give me much to work on...."

Todoroki guffawed.
"Well, couldn't have made yourself less obvious, could ya?"

He waved back at Kazuki and Daisuke.
"Fine day, huh?"

1198
"A few....hours?"
It takes Rin a few seconds to process what happened. Her eyes immediately widen and she begins fretting and flailing, looking around worriedly.
"O-oh no! I've wasted time! I'm so sorry! I was so tired last night, you know? I-I'm sorry, that old lady needed some help with her groceries and then that little boy needed to find his parents and...."
Rin continues babbling away worriedly.

"Find anyone you like the look of, Madoka?"
Todoroki inquired, curiously. After all, anyone who could fight Madoka could probably be someone he could test his skill against too. True, their swordmanship styles were very different; she relied on agility and skill, he relied on overwhelming his opponents with sheer power. But skill was skill.

And besides, he had to get ready. Master Tokiwa was no easy opponent.

Prologue B: Yusuke Yamada Gains His Freedom

[Now Playing: Theme of ?? ~I'm The One Who's Always Saved~]
It was raining. It was always raining.

Rin's friends lay around her, beaten badly, sprawled in the mud. They were always alive.

That familiar figure pointed her sword at her, the blade glowing faintly in the darkening skies. Her purple robes fluttered in the wind and rain, a flash of lightning and a peal of thunder ripping through the sky above them.
"Give him to me."

Rin could feel her strength waning. She too had been badly beaten by their opponent. She was no fighter; not like the others. She was a healer, a curer of diseases and toxins. This wasn't meant for her. Fighting, violence; none of it was her.

But she couldn't let him go. No matter what. He needed people to protect him, people who could see what he refused to. If in his own self-imposed darkness, Rin Rengoku could burn brightly enough to give him a way through, then she would.

And that meant she couldn't surrender, no matter what was going to happen to her if she didn't.
"....I won't."
Her voice was barely a whisper, but the intent was clear. She stretched her arms out, placing a barrier between him and her. Her opponent glared at her icily, her expression twisted in rage and spite.

"You....why are you so stubborn?! He isn't yours to keep! He belongs to me! Get ou of my way! Get out, get OUT!"

The sword thrust into Rin.

[Now Playing: City Theme ~Octopath Traveler Main Theme~]
Rin, Kaori, Kazuki and Daisuke
Rin woke slowly, her eyelids fluttering open.

The tavern around them was busy with activity. People hefted heaving bowls of ramen and overflowing jugs of sake. It was the day when all the merchant boats arrived from Izumo, and so Kamihama would be buzzing with activity; everyone, from Izumite traders to city guards to adventurers would be buzzing around the port district of Kamihama.

Once again, Rin had had that same dream. She knew it well; she was standing between someone she knew, her other friends in the mud, protecting that someone from a figure with a sword who declared they were hers. That had been the fifth time she'd had that same dream. The trouble was, of course, she barely recognised anyone in them; maybe Kaori, possibly Daisuke and Kazuki once.

It was probably nothing, and she wasn't going to waste everyone else's time by making them worry about it.
"....how long was I asleep?", she asked blearily.

Taiga, Setsurou, and Miyako
Time was of the essence.

The three of you are sitting in an alleyway, waiting to strike. In Setsurou's hands, several things are placed; his weapons, a change of clothes for Yusuke, and the letter entrusted to him by Hitoshi Tokiwa, the man Yusuke called his father.

The instructions were simple; free Yusuke, and send him to the Sangonomiya Estate, north of Amatsu. It was terse, brief, devoid of his usual emotions towards his son. But then, this was a letter of extreme urgency. The schedules of the guards were known to the three of you; somehow, by very and completely mysterious means, a copy of them had been made available to Miyako at one point.

A few guards were posted in a perimeter around the prison where Yusuke was to be transferred to, looking for a stray orange cat. Of course, there were many of those in the city, but only one of them would be running from the guards, and only one could talk. Those guards were armed, but with strict orders to subdue only. The location where Yusuke was held was heavily protected, and the location Yusuke would be sent to was an Imperial prison intended to hold prisoners of war and equipped to quell riots; with the supplies available to the three of you, it would be nigh-on impossible to set him free from there.

To catch him in between was your only shot to free him before whatever punishment befell him.

If the timings were correct, you had fifteen minutes before Yusuke's convoy arrived.

Todoroki, Madoka, and the wanderers
"Nothin' like a good drink after a long day's travel, huh, Madoka?"
Todoroki loudly proclaimed his pleasure in the form of a racuous burp. The giant man had no sense of shame; but then, Madoka already knew that, having travelled with him so long. After all, a man almost as skilled as her, the size of your average oni? He had nothing to fear from anyone else.

You have just arrived in the city of Kamihama, on whatever journey you went to Kamihama to accomplish. Maybe you sought power, or friends, or riches. Maybe you traveled for the sake of wandering. EIther way, you are here, in a tavern by the coast, not far from the docks, taking a moment to rest. After all, you arrived here on the same caravan of merchants, adventurers and the like. Maybe you got to know your compatriots on the way, or maybe seek something new.

Regardless, you are all here, now.
//Everyone may post.

Prologue A: The Chains Are Set

~~Chapter Theme~~
~~Aeons ago....~~
The mountains themselves were scorched with crowns of flame, and the sky was choked with reddened ashes. The plains were scoured to their very roots, the grass burned away and the rocks cleaved apart with the force of powerful magic. The roots and vines of a chaos long unseen in Horai faded into the wind, the skies betraying neither the Sun nor the Moon to onlookers. The mortals had long since fled or died. It had been up to the eleven Gods of the Land to defend the world.

But victory was close at hand.

The foreign interloping god before them writhed, shards of ice embedded within her shambling mass. Her body, a writhing mass of roots, vines and tendrils, pulsed painfully, as Ren's flames scorched her. Metallic chains enshrouded by light and shadow slowly dragged her into the chasm below, the work of Suzume, Mao and Amane to seal away their opponent. Another tentacle bore down on Fuyin, her winds protecting the others, only for a sharp cry to pierce the air, and a sharpened blade of coursing waters to descend upon the tentacle, cutting it cleanly.

Giro, God of Justice, bore down on the God of Curses, a sword in his hands coursing with the power of the tides themselves. His glowing blue eyes betrayed his exhaustion; for seven days and seven nights, they had fought the foreign god tirelessly, after she had broken into their world from unknown lands.
"Begone, wretched one! You are unwelcome in our world! Return from whence you came!"
"It shall take....more than that.....to defeat me, godling."

Several vines tore out from the ancient evil's mass, swiping towards the stalwart god. With a sweep of his blade, the god slashed away her tendrils, eliciting a wretched, awful scream from the demon. Giro raised his free hand, clenching his fist tightly to summon all the power he had left in him. Walls of water began to emerge from the chasm below, forming almost a claw over the God of Curses, descending upon her slowly. The hellish deity screeched, blasts of dark energy emerging from the snapping mass of tendrils that comprised her, but the water parted around them, forming itself into serpents, birds and other living things before reforming into an unchanging wall.

Elsewhere on the battlefield, another god lay dying.

"....I'm so sorry.....everybody."

His friends lay dying around him. The wise, powerful Dragon, the crafty Rat, the fierce and powerful Boar; all were laid low by the God of Curses. Their wounds were too great, the damage too much. Even with his power, the God of Life could not save them. He could not even save himself.

Even his nearest, dearest friend, the Cat, lay on his side, a terrible gash torn in his side.

The dying god pulled himself painfully to his feet. His injuries were great; the God of Curses, from wherever she had come, had torn into him with her deadliest blows.
".....I....I have to....I have to make it up to you, my friends."
The God of Life had but one final task. He could summon the last of his power, to do this last task.

Not for nothing had he been appointed a God of the Land.

Amassing what was left of his power, the God of Life strode first to the Rat and laid his hands upon his dying companion. As he did, a string of light emerged from his hand, connecting him and his friend. He slowly made his way to the others, ignoring the fighting in the background. He paid no heed to the thorns that launched themselves almost at his head, barely cast aside by Fuyin's winds, and ignored the force of powerful blasts of dark magic, landing not a hair away from him. As the dread God of Curses was dragged into the chasm that had been opened beneath her, he paid no heed to her dying throes and horrific screams, her last-ditch attempts to drag one of the other Gods of the Land with her.

He needed to save his friends, and that was all that mattered.

Soon, all of his friends were tied together with strings of light, from the Cat to the Rat. The God of Life slumped against a rock, his energy spent. He knew he had done what he had to.
".....I'm sorry I...got you into this mess. With this....promise, we can meet someday, somewhere happier. I hope we.....I hope we can all meet again some-"
His eyes began to close, his duty done.
"I will not be....caged! I will never be caged!"

The God of Curses had not ignored him.

A tendril crawled across the ground, ripping through dirt and stone, towards the dying Cat. The God of Life's eyes widened in fear, urging what was left of himself to move, to do anything to stop what was about to happen.

It was too late for him, for his strength left him.

The God of Life died then, afraid.

A darkness emerged from the tendril, beginning to take over the Cat, to take him with God of Curses into the abyss, before-
"Don't. You. Dare."
A row of icicles descended upon the tendril, obliterating it. Asha, Goddess of Love, strode calmly towards it, an icy glare in her eyes.

The God of Curses screamed her curses as she fully descended into the chasm that had been opened, that would now be her prison.
"You....you haven't.....beaten me! Godlings! I will return! I shall-"
With a loud roar, from the skies descended a massive meteor, smashing into the chasm, throwing dust and smoke and leveling what still stood with the sheer force. Mere mortals would not have withstood such force.

The Gods of the Land, thankfully, were not mere mortals.

The silence was defeaning, but victory was theirs. The God of Curses had been defeated at an awful cost.

The moment she was sure their opponent had been truly beaten, Asha turned towards the fallen God of Life. Gone was the icy goddess, here was the goddess of love, whose fallen friend needed tending. She scooped up his body in her lap, cleaning away the dirt and hair from his pained face.
"Giro! Amane! Someone! Come here, help me! Help me!"
Giro was the closest, striding over, sheathing his blade. The stalwart god's expression softened as he realised what he was seeing.
"....no."
His voice was soft. Asha felt tears begin to stream down her cheeks.
"Please, Giro. We can't....he can't...."
Fuyin arrived next, the air bearing her aloft and letting her land gently.
"....he's....he's gone, Asha. We can't...."
"We were too late."
Asha sniffled, choking back a sob.
"We.....we should've come faster. We could've saved him. We could've saved them."
".....we can't mourn long, sister. There are others who still need our help. He....wouldn't want us to stay idle, to cry over him like this."
"Giro's right, Asha. We....we have to go. Come on."

Fuyin approached the grieving goddess, her hand extended.
"It hurts, you're right. But...there's a time to cry and mourn, and we can do it when we've....we've fixed everything."
Giro surveyed the ruined land before them, the only sounds being the crackling of distant flames and the desolate wind. The footsteps of the other gods were getting closer.
"....yes. When we've fixed everything...."
He cast a gaze back at his fallen brother.
"This, I swear. We will fix this world, we will mend it....and if ever you should return, you will find a better world than you left. That....I swear on my honor as a god."

Unbeknownst to the gods, even as the others began to gather near their fallen compatriot, a darkness seeped from the Cat and into the strings of light binding his soul and the others together, and vanished, as quickly as it came.
