She groans as she pulls herself up, using her staff for support. All things told, she'd had worse days. The war wasn't exactly a vacation.

Still, getting subjected to the wrath of a Mamkute was up there on the list. It was an experience Emilia preferred not to repeat. Or have gone through at all.

Definitely from Nippon; their poetry style was unmistakeable. She swayed from left to right, hands behind her back.

Nearby, someone not quite like all the other inhabitants of the Holy Cross sits on a table.

The slender young woman, clad in all black, frowns as she checks the innards of her coin pouch. They were much lighter than she had been hoping for, far too light.

That previous job had gone right. That ghost had been rather rowdy. He'd been a violent drunk gambler in life, one who'd died a rather ignimonious death drowning in his own vomit. Her employer had bought the house from the gambler's wife, who'd fled the place when her husband's ghost had decided to become a poltergeist. He'd resisted most of the efforts by the local priest to get rid of him.

He hadn't accounted for an exorcist from the East with far too much experience dealing with the dead.

It was no trouble, no trouble at all for Lin Guifei, daughter of Lin Qiang, former director of the Lin Funeral Parlor and exorcist of the Hundred Trees, to get rid of such a meddlesome, mundane ghost.

It was far too much trouble for her to be paid properly. She suspected the house owner had stiffed her. They'd agreed thirty guilders; what she'd gotten was ten. It'd get her through the week, but....

In a word, Guifei was broke.

"It'll be a long time before I can return home."

And then salvation.

A group of people had gathered over near where she was, and she even recognised a face.

If she knew her rumours - and Lin Guifei knew them well, she'd been the subject of them herself - then she knew who was standing right before her.

The man in the hat, if she was right, was the demon slayer from the islands to the Far East. The one she'd been hearing about, and the one she always just about missed.

It was about the closest she was getting to a fellow Easterner, and if rumour served right, the best chance she was getting at a payday.

"Well, it is what it is."

She stands up, steeling her courage, and walks over.

"Sooooooo what's going on here?"

Jack's attacks are feral and frenzied. Akihiko, by contrast, is calm. Almost too calm.

The first stab, charged with shadowy energy, Akihiko dodges almost non-chalantly, the blade landing an inch away from where he was a moment ago. The second stab lands on target. Or it would, if Akihiko hadn't caught the blade, being forced to his knees to avoid it hitting him directly. The spells used on Akihiko have visibly weakened him, as he trembles and struggles beneath the weight of Jack, but you can almost see his furrowed brow beneath his masked visage, as he fights against the stronger opponent.

The larger Majin lifts another hand onto the hilt of his knife, attempting to manoeuvre it into Akihiko's body, but the Kaijin is able to muster enough power to push the knife's blade into the sand next to him. With a swift kick to the ribs, Akihiko pushes him back.

"...eh?"
"People like you...."

Akihiko stands back up, unsteady. His stance is not the martial artist's stance he prefers, but one slightly hunched over, fists clenched.

"....I'll make sure you'll never hurt Futaba again."

Onibi will now attempt to bypass Akihiko unless he attacks them or Jack directly.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the map, Momotaro is having more than somewhat of a difficult time.

Emilia considers the words as she flinches away from the Dragon's strikes. Her clothes are torn; she briefly mourns their ruin. This was quite a nice dress.

Still, more pressing matters were at hand. She could always have a new one tailored.
"No, you're right. We can't be sure that the one we have is not a forgery. But we also cannot be sure that the King's is not a forgery either. The only way for us to prove either one is to have both examined by a neutral party. If the King has nothing to hide, surely he has nothing to fear by proving that his Emblem is genuine. As a sister of the Warriors, and as an honorable knight, I am sure that you realise the interests of justice for Dunland's people are best served if the King proves himself to his people after that display, and not at all served by killing what may be the last being standing between us and the Dark God's return.

Furthermore, if they were truly malevolent, there were so many other ways to dispose of the King instead of this that would be surefire, easier to do than attacking a fortified castle with more soldiers than anywhere else in Dunland on this very day, at this very moment. I've seen desperation. I've known it. We're not fighting a monster or Spawnkin."

She stumbles, leaning on her staff. That swipe had left her quite sore, but no deep wounds. Nothing worse than she'd gone through in the war.

"I ask you again, esteemed Mamkute. Stay your hand, hear us out and let us help you. Is there anything else you know, anything at all that can help us uncover the truth?"

"You might be right, Rhian, but we need to find out who else is involved. Even if our visitor is right, if these allegations are true, we'll have to look deeper to find the root of the corruption. Even if we let them go after the King, chances are there'll be others who were involved who will carry on that cause without them. As a Maiden Warrior, my job is to prevent wars. If this course prevents another between the Mamkutes and humanity, I must pursue it. I'll stand with you, Rhian, and with Sir Dunas."

She turns to address Thrum and Eleshyn.

"You saw what we did. The King's son is not of holy blood. He fled with the Fire Emblem. You have been deceived as we have been. Are you both so eager to plunge your people and country, to whom you have sworn yourselves, into another war so soon after we have ended the last one?"

For once, Emilia was taken aback.

A Mamkute appearing so suddenly....this was something out of her wheelhouse. At least, for a minute.

Then they spoke. And her brother was in danger. And they knocked Rhian away. For a moment, her protective instincts kicked in. She tensed, having gone for her lance. But the more it spoke, the more she understood.

She steps forward to place herself between the Mamkute and Patrice.
"Brother. Stay back. I appreciate the sentiment, but you have never been the fighting type."

She looks over to the others and hears them discuss, putting together the information herself.

"I ask only two things, esteemed Mamkute.

Firstly, I ask that you stay your hand for at least a moment. We too have realised that we have been played for fools, but if you slay him here, and now, they will get their war, your people will be slaughtered again and your oppressor shall win and we will never find the truth. Stay your hand, and let us help each other. Help us work out the true perpetrator, because I too have had more than enough of this skulduggery.

Secondly, I ask for your name. Those whose voices beg to be heard are owed the respect of being referred to by name."

Tomoe visibly shudders at the idea of a Shiryo. You remember that among your current crew, though she is Cursed, she is the one who lacks a Gnosis.

Then again, of course, Todoroki fought one without a Gnosis either, and all he lost was an eye.

"The beast is somewhere upstairs. I think. This house may well be a Domain, so if there is a Shiryo in here, we're at a disadvantage."

"A Domain? Damn it."

"While in here, the Shiryo has full control of the area. If we are in one....swordsman, lead the way. I will need to use my full concentration to help us find the beast."

Keiko points upstairs, towards a corridor heading off into the bedrooms.
