Think the term you're looking for is Captain Ersatz. An Expy is one that resembles another character with major differences. Captains Ersatz are basically the character under a different name.

Expy would be what Sabrina is to Sumia. Captain Ersatz is what Wiles would be to Skulduggery Pleasant.

... Or how about you don't make a hideously uninspired expy, pick a concept, and build upon it until you produce a character?
