To be fair, your characters were a social Darwinist super soldier who looked down on everyone else for being too weak to protect others and some guy who kept throwing knives at people to get noticed, and then had the misfortune to talk to the emotionless girl.

If trying to introduce your characters by gimmicky ways (*cough*throwing knives at them by accident*cough*) doesn't work, try a "Hi, I'm {insert name} here. Who are you?" approach?
And PLEASE, try to do it to someone who isn't emotionless, evil, insane or otherwise not receptive to that kind of crap.
