Actually, no matter what you do, you turn into a witch or die. You either get killed by witches, or you accumulate enough Grief to turn into a witch- which will happen, regardless of how many times you clear your gem. Kinda just how hopeless the damn world is. Every Puella Magi is destined to die, it's how that differs *cough*Mami Mogu Mogu*cough*.

....and now I want to punch Sanure for not using Rebellion's world....

Also, does anyone else think that this story just kind of had a very unnerving spin of mood whiplash.

I mean if I was watching this as an anime. We had the defeat of the witch, two more characters join both with ominous events when they made their wishes, then the two characters that separated from the group are last seen getting ready to battle in a labyrinth... then we cut to a rather goofy breakfast with only the vaguest mentioning of the two missing characters.

I would be on the edge of my seat wondering what happened.
