Name: Tanis the Lance
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Appearance: Tanis has dark hair, brown eyes, and pale skin, but since he practically never takes off his ironwood full-plate, you’d never know. The armor is crafted from magical ironwood, strong as steel, and is still alive. Leaves sprout from the shoulders, helm, and back, and the armor heals when damaged. Tanis wears a tabard over it displaying his coat of arms, a passant, black big cat on a metallic gold background, which contrasts with the dark, earthy tones of his other equipment. He carries a kite shield, a mace, and his signature lance for personal defense, all worked from ironwood. Being tall for a halfling, he stands about three feet tall, but makes up for his height by riding a leopard into battle.
Home Universe: The Forgotten Realms
Background: As a young man, Tanis lived in a largely peaceful, agrarian village of halflings, the son of a local lord. His noble origin gave the halfling knight some training in the martial and diplomatic arts, but nowhere near enough to prepare him for when a band of marauding orcs attacked the village, slaughtered everyone, and burned not only the village but everything for miles around before absconding with their spoils. Furious, Tanis vowed to avenge everything that the orc warband had destroyed, but by the time he’d recovered from his wounds and become strong enough to actually stand a chance against the orcs, finding them was a greater challenge than fighting them would ever be. Tanis now travels the realms as a knight errant, righting wrongs where he finds them, ever searching for his nemesis. Championing harmony’s cause is just one more quest.
Advantage: As a druid, Tanis can cast a wide variety nature-based spells, communicate with animals as though they shared a language with him, transform into animals at will, and enjoys the services of a loyal leopard animal companion. However, he cannot use metal weapons, armor, or tools without losing all his druid abilities for a week.
Stats:
Melee: 5. As his moniker suggests, Tanis is extremely skilled with a lance, and he’s not bad with his mace either.
Ranged: 3. Tanis is a fairly bad shot with a bow, but he has access to powerful druidic spells like Flame Strike, Ice Storm, and the ever-useful Web to inconvenience foes or defeat foes.
Mobility: 2. Tanis’ halfling legs don’t make him very quick, but his leopard mount is quick and agile. Still, they can’t get to anywhere a halfling riding a leopard couldn’t go.
Defense: 2. Tanis’ shield and armor provide solid protection, but they can be circumvented with creativity or brute force.
Super: 2
Skills:
Wild Shape: Tanis uses a turn to transform into an animal, allowing him to redistribute his melee, mobility, and defense stats until he ends the transformation. However, Tanis cannot cast spells while transformed, so his ranged stat becomes useless to him.
Restorative Magic: As a druid, Tanis has an arsenal of spells to heal and cure any ailment, wound, or curse. He can do most healing on the spot, but particularly nasty wounds or ailments might require him to wait until he can prepare a spell specifically to deal with it. Tanis prepares his spells at sunrise.
Obnoxious Spellwork: Druids have access to more crowd control and zoning spells than any other spellcaster in the Forgotten Realms. Web, entangle, wall of fire, sleet storm, spike stones, and wall of thorns are only some of the many ways that Tanis can ensure you’ll never want to leave where you are right now.
Supers:
Critical Success: Sometimes, when one attempts a task, one succeeds beyond one’s wildest dreams. This super transforms a roll of 6 from a catastrophic success into a critical success, which has positive results above and beyond what it might be reasonably expected to.
