Bertholt is rather tall, standing around 5'11''. His build is slight; not unathletic and not overly thin, a result of being naturally blessed in that regard. His hair is a deep blue and always carefully groomed, matching his blue eyes. He seems to exude the air of a prince, despite seeming to anyone who does not know of his status as simply a priest in training. Bertholt is rather serene and calm, always keeping careful control of his emotions, with a pleasant, charitable and courteous nature. Beneath this kind exterior lies a steely mind, unyielding for the causes Bertholt wishes to fight for and remaining strong in the face of adversity.
House Aviane is a large, prosperous house in the land of Rheane, based in the city of Almace, a bustling trade outpost/pilgrimage stop on the way to the Ruin of Rhea. The House traces its genealogy to the earliest days of Rheane, with Almace being founded in part by the pilgrim Clement, the near-mythical patriarch of Aviane. Ironically for a family that hails a pilgrim as its founder, Aviane is the farthest from pious as a Rheanean house can be, more concerned with mercantile pursuits than the worship of Rhea. Of course, with plenty of pilgrims needing food, clothes and various sundries and traders accompanying the pilgrims to new lands, House Aviane never found itself wanting for sources of income, to the extent that most years, it is the patriarch of House Aviane that represents Almace in the National Summit. Currently, the patriarch of the house is Martell of Aviane, an older man who plans to pawn off his estate to his second eldest daughter of three children, Catherine of Aviane and her husband.
Bertholt is the oldest child and only son of Martell of Aviane. From a young age, he showed the traits of a perfect son; he was quiet, courteous and skilled in pursuits expected of your average man, not to mention the pursuits of mercantile trade that Rheaneans were expected to be good at, with a frightening proficiency with a bow. He was well-educated; a Rheanean could hardly be proud of themselves if they knew nothing about the complexities of trade. Martell saw a future heir in him; he would be married off to a good woman of similar position and would take over the Aviane name and carry it on through the generations. Bertholt, of course, was in possession of that other trait that was considered marginally less desirable in an heir, a will of iron, and possessed of a great respect for the goddess Rhea; he in particular desired to care for the weak and vulnerable of the land. It was the combination of these traits that led him, much to his father's- temporary- chagrin, to take up the position of a priest in a priory in the mountains north of Almace.
He remained a perfect gentleman and blossomed into a man with the bearing of a prince in the garb of a priest as he stayed there, learning the arts of healing under the guidance of the aged prioress. He aided many people, pilgrims and citizens alike, in his stay at the priory. Though he loved to help others, however, a desire to roam the world that he had shut himself off from grew in her heart- a world he found had grown ever distant, only heard of through the mouths of the sickly and the worldly pilgrim. What cemented his decision, however, was the attack of a bandit upon his priory, days before the prioress was to give her mantle over to Bertholt. He was knocked unconscious during a night raid by said bandit, who had attempted to steal more but had been driven away by the sisters of the priory before more damage was done. However, Bertholt was kept, in order to ransom him for the riches of the priory. It was during his short stay with the bandit that Bertholt learned of the events in Izzarra; the invasion by Mordo and the state of the peoples there. The bandit explained that she had kidnapped Bertholt to gain money to buy medicine for her sickly mother, now that many of the apothecaries of Izzarra had fled, died or been put to use by the Mordonian occupation.
It was here that Bertholt found his opportunity.
After a conversation with the bandit, he gained the bandit's service, promising them the money they asked for and steady employment as his bodyguard, while he adapted to the world he had left behind. The bandit gratefully took the opportunity, and Bertholt returned to the priory to pack his things and bid his companions goodbye. To the prioress, he respectfully declined the position; for Bertholt, there were more important things, and there were worthier candidates to ascend to the role than he. That night, Bertholt of Aviane would set forth from the mountains of Rheane, down to the path to Almace. From there, he would set forth to Izzarra, exploring the world on the way and helping those who needed it. Bertholt cared not for the orders of Mordo nor for the danger; to him, all that mattered was that people were in need of help and Bertholt's duty was to help them, both as a son of Aviane and as a servant of Rhea.
