Keiko shakes her head.
"There are legends of Shiryo that retain their human intelligence. Iwatani-douji, Muromachi, Kidoumaru, those monsters recorded in as part of the Hyakki Yagyo...they are rare, mostly exterminated. The Shiryo, no matter how powerful, are weak to the power contained within a Gnosis, and in any case, the only Shiryo known to have that level of intelligence have lived for centuries. It's not likely the Empress is one, given she herself is a Gnosis wielder."

647
"Uh, well..."
"Did I overhear someone talking about good weapons?"

A Diver approaches the gathered group. Judging from his attire, he seems to be native to the Shard. His username, Melthorion, is pretty clearly displayed, with him being around the middle levels.

"Sorry, I've been having some trouble selling my stuff, what with how many people are here, so I'm angling to make any kind of profit."
"Huh? What you got?"
"Why don't you come and have a look? I promise you, it'll be worth your while."

Alexis, if she is paying attention, for a split second, spies OnyxJoker nodding to someone off in the crowd, just for a split second, before he looks back at Melthorion.
"Sure. Guys, you mind?"

648
"All you've ever done is make me the scapegoat to all of your messes!"
Serena clenches her fist.
"All my life, I've been content with being useless, with being the lazy screwup because I could never be as good as you and everyone else. I never had any incentive to change, not until I tried to end this stupid war because I had enough of everyone treating me like I was useless, like I couldn't do anything and I thought just for once, if I could find a way to end this war, then I'd finally have the respect I wanted so badly. Maybe everyone would stop treating me like the butt of all the goddess jokes."
"But now....now I know what I can do. I know what my worth is. Everything I've seen here....everything I've found out....."
"It doesn't matter if I have any respect. But I won't let you ruin anything else."

Freya visibly trembles with anger.
"You...shut up! Shut up! You're supposed to be the runt! The useless one! Know your place! I'll teach you and your stupid friends their place, and when I ascend to MY rightful place as Queen in Caelestia, then maybe you'll finally understand what a real burden it is to be a goddess!"

Freya begins to increase in size, her frame distorting and warping, her humanoid body twisting and turning sleeker, scales sliding out over her skin, as light begins to engulf her. When the light fades, a gigantic white dragon fills the room between Demogorgia's casket and Team F. The aura emerging from the transformed Goddess Dragon is almost oppressive.

"Enough holding back. If you will not back down willingly, then you will feel the touch of unfettered love. Starting with you, Mephistopheles."
"I will NEVER serve you, G-"

The tangible aura Team F can feel in the room begins to wrap itself around Mephistopheles, whose eyes glaze over upon contact.
"I will serve....you....my lady."
Clearly tensing against whatever compulsion the Goddess Dragon has placed him under, Mephistopheles walks over and places himself between Team F and Freya.
"Now, for the rest of you."

Team F can feel Freya's aura begin to wrap around them like it did Mephistopheles, before-

"No more!"
A translucent, amber barrier forms around each individual member of Team F as Rhea, hand outstretched, summons her power to hold back Freya's. With that, the aura seems to fade away near the group, as if a haze in the air was blown away with a breeze. The Goddess of Order, however, is visibly straining.
"I can't....fight AND hold up this barrier. You need to defeat Freya....before my power gives out. She's giving it all she's got!"
"Sister mine, you cannot possibly hope to hold out so long if I've stopped holding back. Give in. Live a little."
"I...swore I would use my power only in defense of....our creation. You have....violated that promise. As Goddess of Order....I will punish you. You have...no right!"

"We'll take over from here, sis. Everyone....let's do this. Divine Blessing."
Suddenly, everyone's weapons begins to shimmer.
"Just a little gift. Even with that little boost, this isn't going to be easy."
"Come then, Serena! Bring all your might! You will never make me yield!"

Orobas simply looks at Keith's fist, and back at him, confused briefly, before shaking his head.
"Piper. You'd better not die to that Goddess Dragon."
"Einherjar! Show your true faith! Quash these unbelievers!"

A loud battle cry roars over the beach as the faithful dead of Freya begin sprinting towards the gathered allies of Team F. Orobas turns back to face Pyra, only for a fireball to smash directly into him, engulfing him.

However, instead of being blown off his feet like you would expect, when the fireball dissipates, Orobas remains standing, glaring intensely at the fire goddess.

"W-what-?"
"I have been alive for three thousand years, goddess. I've been around since the last Demon Lord. Do you really think some tiny fuckin' fireball is going to get rid of me so easily?!"

The grizzled old demon roars and leads the charge, Trish, Rena and Lucifer right behind him.

Mephistopheles looks to the group.
"I know the way. Follow me."

Through winding, black stone corridors and up spiral staircases, Team F, led by Mephistopheles, arrives at a large room with a pair of white marble doors. Or, at least they would be there, if they hadn't been blasted off their hinges, and lying in ruins strewn upon the red carpet leading to the middle of the room.

"Lady Demogorgia's casket is in here...."

Without another word, Mephistopheles runs in, the party following close behind.

The chamber holding the casket of the previous Demon Lord was vast, soaring columns reaching to a plain stone ceiling far above the floor, but scarcely adorned, with only a red carpet leading to a stone dais on the other side of the room. Upon the dais, a golden casket with a glass cover sits, illuminated by a skylight allowing sunlight to shine down upon its occupant.

"...my queen deserved to have the sun shine upon her. But not like this."

"How sentimental. For a demon."

Freya descends from above, standing between them and the casket.
"You witch. Don't you dare get anywhere close to my queen!"
"Oh? Would you not like your queen returned to you?"
"What?"
"I intend to bring her back, of course. As a gracious goddess always rewards her creations."
"Stop with your lies! You would never-"
"Oh. Don't get me wrong. It's not entirely altruistic. After all, if I resurrect her, my sister won't be able to."
"Wait, that's why you're here?"
"What you can do, I can do better, sister mine. Then, when I'm done here, and done making sure you won't rat my entire scheme out....I'll have Demogorgia imprisoned. Far away. It'll be comfortable, of course. I'm no monster, unlike her and her filthy subjects. But far enough away that my dear mother won't have to worry about finding the truth."
"I'll kill you first!"
"Dear, you couldn't kill me if I let you."
"Why are you even doing all this?"
"You wouldn't get it. You've always been the reject of our little godly family. The runt. The fuck-up. I have been trying so hard to be the best daughter I can be for our mother, unlike you! So, I feel I deserve some form of reward for my hard work making up for the past. Something like....becoming the Queen of the Gods, for instance, when our mother steps down. But if Mother ever found out the truth, well...."

Freya giggles.

"I can't let Mother know the truth. It would ruin everything. If someone like you could even comprehend what we're dealing with, maybe you'd agree with me."
"It can't be worth plunging Generia into eternal war and killing or silencing everyone who knows anything about it! What kind of monster are you?!"
"The reject, the screw-up, calling me, the perfect daughter, a monster?! How presumptuous."

650
-snip-
OnyxJoker seems to follow her lead, lowering her voice.
"Suspicious, huh? Don't you think that might just be generosity?"

651
"Hm. Well. This'll need some background to explain."
Keiko looks deep in thought for a few moments.

"As those who studied Mahou should know, there are eleven elements corresponding to the eleven Gods of the Land, and the basis of all Mahou is based upon understanding how to manipulate these elements. The classical tetrad; fire from Ren, water from Giro, wind from Fuyin, and earth from Ozen. The dualistic elements; Amane's light, embodying curiosity, and Mao's darkness, embodying satiation. And the opposing tetrad; Rau's lightning, Asha's ice, Midan's flora and Suzume's iron. And life energy, employed by the God of Life, whose name remains forgotten. Ten of these elements can manifest in a Gnosis, governed by the remaining ten Gods of the Land. Life manipulation is weaker, less common; if you know your folklore, the God of Life died to seal off the God of Curses. This is why life energy can only be channeled through staves, or with specific incantations, and why nobody possesses a Life-elemental Gnosis; these things were only created after the God of Curses was sealed away, to limit the damage that the Gods of the Land could inflict when unchecked."

Again, Momo looks away awkwardly for a brief second.

"Shiryo, as those who know, do not use Mahou. Whatever magic they use, it's not one recognised by the scholars of the Five Kingdoms. We know they are vulnerable only to particularly strong Mahou or the use of a Gnosis. How you can tell this is those with a Gnosis, or those who use Mahou, can sense elemental energy. You can sense traces of it anywhere if you concentrate. Whenever a Mahou user channels Mahou, or a Gnosis wielder invokes their Gnosis, you can sense the elemental energy being utilised. For instance...."

She points at Nullstar. Keiko closes her eyes, breathing in deeply, before opening them. Her eyes seem to shimmer faintly.

"You are practically coursing with elemental energy. The mixture of energies within your armor, and the dark energy emanating from your Gnosis. That is how I can tell Mahou is being used."

Keiko's eyes cease shimmering.

"Shiryo don't leave those same traces. Their magic is detected by the absence of Mahou; if something clearly must've been created by magic but we can't sense elemental energy, then it is the work of a Shiryo. You saw the magic the Empress uses? Now, her Imperial Seal courses with a mix of energies, of course. A gift from the Gods of the Land themselves, it must do. But as for her actual magic, it lacks any elemental energy, and leaves no traces of elemental energy. My theory is that somehow, she has figured out how to tap into the same source of power the Shiryo do, without being one. But....that should be impossible; a Gnosis and the magic of a Shiryo are diametrically opposed. Which is why it's only a theory."

652
Pyra snorts, her voice clearly contemptuous and her gaze that of a bemused teacher telling her students about how the world works.
"What are you even talking about? You sound like some kind of child, talking about determination and will and...come on. You can't honestly believe that, right? Wolfhound? Don't make me laugh. We've been here since the dawn of time, you fucking halfwit. You think those fists of yours will scare us?"
"All this time....all you've ever done is bully me and treat everyone here like they were your personal toys to use! You made me....you taught me that treating them like was the right way. Was the only way. And now it'll have to stop. Mortals deserve something better. As do demons."
"Who'll stop me? You, with your little staff and your group of rejects and your party tricks?"

"Shut the hell up, you complete half-ass of a godling pup!"

[Now Playing: Theme of Orobas ~Pledge of Demon~]

A large, red shape swoops into view, their gigantic, muscular fist smashing into the Goddess Dragon of Fire's face and sending her sprawling. Megara's eyes whip towards the attacker, and for a brief moment, her face looks somewhere between intimidated and impressed. Pyra, lying on the ground, touches a hand to her face; while not even bruised, the attack caught her off guard.

"You hit me! You hit me! Not even my own mother hit me!"

The giant, imposing shape of Orobas Centimani Rhadamanthea steps in front of Keith and the rest of Team F.

"The loser isn't the one who goes down first. The loser's the one who gives up. The loser is the one who puts nothing but a half-assed effort into it. And you look like a half-ass."
"I hate half-asses."
He turns back to Keith briefly.
"Piper. You got some nerve, standing up against the Goddesses. Maybe I'll give you some respect."
Then, he faces the recovering Pyra. The Goddess Dragon, for all her godly power, is dwarfed by the gargantuan frame of the old, grizzled demon before her. She tries to make herself appear stronger, taller, but against Orobas, barely anyone could look almost as intimidating.
"Only one person gets the right to be the one who finally beats that vampire. And I'll be damned if it isn't me. Goddess Dragon, Revivian, Demon Lord....if you want to come at me, you're gonna need more than some half-assed excuse for a goddess to beat me down."
"You....I'll burn you up first! A senile old demon, fighting an army and goddesses alone....what kind of joke are you playing at?"

Orobas lets out a dry laugh.
"When the hell did I say I was alone?"

[Now Playing: Theme of Discordia ~TEARS OF THE DRAGON~]

Suddenly, as if on cue, multiple portals, formed of swirling dark energy open in front of Team F, behind Orobas. The first to step on the scene are Kazuto's party, Kazuto, Rena and Borea right behind him.
"I guess you guys would be doomed without us, huh?"
"This is for what you did for me all those months ago, Rio. If....you hadn't done that, I don't think I'd be here. Not with Kazuto. Not with everyone. It's about time I repay that debt."
"I'll protect you, Serena. You've....always been nicer to me than everyone else. It's time for your older sister to do her part to protect you."

As the rest of Great Grandee pour out behind them, from the portal to the left of Team F issues forth....

"Kept you waiting, huh?"
"I'm behind you, Boss!"
"One last ride together, sis!"

Trish Senara, Boss of the Wharf Street Warriors, turns around to Team F.

"We got a message saying you needed some help. Couldn't resist the urge. The idea of adding a Goddess Dragon to my resume....pretty big."

A tall, dark-skinned man in black armor follows not far behind, a gigantic sword slung across his shoulders, with similarly garbed fighters behind him.

"Well, Trish. Looks like we'll be joining you for this fight, huh?"

The rest of the Warriors pour out behind Trish, her best and brightest fighters, joining the gathered Drake Park Chiefs.

To the right of Team F, four shapes pour out from another portal.

"Well, well. Mephistopheles, my lord. An interesting alliance you've made. You'd be lost without us, wouldn't you?"
"Keep your eyes on the prize, Lucy."
"He never could resist a moment to brag. Maybe that's why we were on a break."
"Oh, honey. You wound me so-!"
"You three, just shut up and let's do this. I haven't had coffee for two hours, I'm behind on Recovery of an Impulse Junkie and Hermelin Ajin no Densetsu, AND I need to upload the next update for Clash of Legends! Let's get this over with so I can go home!"

Nearby, a small army of demons pours out of a different portal, led by Leviathan and Mammon.
"Darling. We're so close to the ending we've sought. Hold your strength. We'll make it to the end."
"As long as I have strength in my body, my beloved- no, as long as you stand by my side, I can do what I must to ensure the path to the future."
"...then please stay by my side too, my love. Until the end."

A gigantic, pink shape descends from the sky, and Team F notes that they can see Discordia and Sitri hanging on the top.

"is time to eat rood goddesses. yis. am want pats and fuds afterwards."
"Who could've thought he could bounce so high...."
"We'll help...as soon as I'm recovered...."
"Serena! Rhea! We'll protect you and everyone!"

More familiar faces appear from the portals, stepping forth in front of the heroes. Baron Airmladre, Haruo and Rina from Nishimiya Ramen in Kaisei, the Wiggler-headed tribesmen, even....

"I told you, vampire. Us demons never forget our debts."

From long ago, all those months ago in Begnin, Lautia Cinisia Mammonia steps forth, waving at Keith.

"You forgot me, maybe. I didn't forget you. I will admit, after retiring from the Demon Lord's army, real estate seemed a boring idea in comparison to coming to help you. My debt's still unpaid. So let's go do this."

A veritable army of Team F's allies has rallied, and has placed themselves between the Goddesses and their einherjar, and Team F.

Mammon, taking point upon his wyvern, turns back to Team F.
"Serena! My lord Mephistopheles! We'll hold them off. If Freya has broken into the palace, then stop her. We'll hold off the rest."
"Leave these jackasses to us."

"Wait. Borea. Your connection to Caelestia is not yet severed, yes?"
"Why?"
"Get Mother down here. Whatever way you can. Get her here as fast as possible. We'll stall Freya as much as we can. Discordia, hold them here with the rest. I'll need to go with Serena's group. My power can stop Freya's."
"Understood. It's....good to see you again, Rhea. Maybe-"
"We can talk about a reunion when the day is over."

Serena turns to her team, smiling.
"Alright! Let's go. Team F.... believe in us! Let's stop my sister!"

653
The suited man rubs the back of his head.
"Eheh. I wouldn't mind, but uh....I'll need to get those weapons first. Add me and my partner, we can look together. Username's OnyxJoker."

Opening up OnyxJoker's profile tells you a few things immediately. Firstly, he's a mid-level player, and secondly, originally from Lugh, the complete opposite Shard. Nothing too spectacular. Nothing out of place. According to his profile, he's already in a party with another user called Maya. With Rebel Impulse's system allowing for parties of up to 10, and allowing multiple parties to band together up to that total, however, this shouldn't be an issue.

654
"No idea, but I have a few theories. You are aware of what a Shiryo is, right?"

656
-snip-
The young man turns around, rubbing the back of his head. He laughs.
"That obvious, huh?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty new around here. Been meaning to try out a new loadout."

657
Keiko barely blinks.
"No surprise there. The Empress....I don't know if you sensed it, but she doesn't even need to use Mahou to fight us. And of course...well...."
She thinks for a bit.
"She should have a Gnosis, but if she had one, she's not worn it for a long time."

658
"I can't say for certain. I've done some tinkering with the Curse directly, at least how it works on myself. But it's like trying to pick a pair of manacles tied behind you with a strand of hair."
Keiko produces a few books. Curses and Bindings, A History of Mahou, The Records of Curses; it seems Keiko's been doing her reading on the Curse.
"All the sources I've discovered say that the Curse was only meant to reincarnate us once. I can't say if it was on purpose or not that we're trapped. What I do know is that it's nigh-impossible to break through magical means."
Momo shifts uncomfortably.

659
Gustave, for a moment, feels a pair of eyes watching him closely as he speaks to Ellen. If he were to glance in the direction he felt the eyes on him, however, he'd see a few passing newbies, denoted by the acorn next to their usernames, in a party chatting to each other, but nobody paying close attention to him. At best, he might catch the hint of a trenchcoat disappearing in the crowd, but nothing more.

Nearby, a few people pass out pamphlets advertising Mara Luna's next stream, scheduled for 3 PM PST in a few days, with a planned PvP tourney held at the DcMonalds in Credne followed by boss raids at the Ethniu Ruins in Cethleann to farm materials.

Cynefrith, Sasaki and Alexis are suddenly aware of a man rather out of place.

With sleek black suit, white shirt and black tie, and a slightly dusty fedora, the player looks rather out of place in the medieval fantasy-themed Cichol. By the looks of it, they're either a Lugh or Morrigan player, judging from the revolver holster just visible under their jacket. He closely inspects the selection of a nearby weapon seller. He gives off the air of someone lost in this place as he picks up a knife, examining it in the sunlight.

"Huh. The stats on this are pretty high. For this cheap?"

660
"....fuck, man, I'm so sorry for whatever you went through that made your inner demon come out like that. Assuming inner demons even work like that. Sorry, don't have an answer for ya, bud."
