I'd assume much the same way Akroma did for RotMG; it appears that generally, stronger attacks against weaker opponents deal more damage and so on. The HP is there because there's got to be SOME point where your Avatar gets rekt and it acts as a guideline to let me know when to tell you 'your Avatar got rekt, gudbai burst points'.
So, a semi-arbitrary system, but generally basic attacks will do the least damage while the really strong ones with a ton of upgrades and stats behind them similar to those used by Level 9s (Death By Embracing, for instance) will, if not kill you, reduce you to extremely low health.

And anyway I'd assume the healer would win with their side regardless of kills.
