DF General Discussion / ASCII or Tileset Use
« on: January 12, 2023, 02:05:30 am »
DF got its steam release with a whole new default graphics tileset and shortly afterwards had an ASCII 'classic' tileset addition implemented. I, personally prefer the ASCII for a variety of reasons, performance notwithstanding. This left me wondering, though...

What graphics do the current DF players prefer?
Do you prefer to use a tileset or ASCII graphics?

Dear Thob Akrulsedur,

While you may be assured, you will be missed, I'm afraid that no memorial to your name will come to bear, indeed, while you shall certainly be missed greatly for a period, after that I fear your name and endeavors will be lost to history, along with the rest of the fortress.

After our previous miner was lost in an unfortunate aquifer-piercing accident, it is understandable that you were considerably shaken. After all, he fell into the water before your very eyes: you were too shocked to even report his death. It was very compassionate of you to tell his wife that he had merely gone missing.

However, your behavior cannot be excused, insofar as you were ordered to dig a straight channel through the ice, you chose to jump into the water, and joined your late compatriot.

Did your grief know no bounds?

Did you really believe him lost: were you trying to search for him there?

In either case, now that the fortress lacks picks, survival in this barren waste is looking increasingly unlikely.

Here's to you having found him; we'll be looking for you in the afterlife.

Sincerely, the Fortress.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your early misconceptions about DF

I thought I was in control.

I thought I was playing the game.

...

The game was playing me.

Also, the misconception about farms requiring water is because in older versions they did. You had to flood an area and farm on the mud left behind.

Fortresses aren't built to keep invaders out. THEY'RE BUILT TO KEEP DWARVES IN.

The fortresses are penal colonies.

The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.
Condemned dwarves are escorted to a certain point in the wilderness, given directions to the fortress, and left to themselves; if they don't make it, the wilderness will surely claim their lives.

The number of convicts arriving varies based on how much wealth you export; the mountainhome expects the penal colonies to provide them with industry, and thus sends the most convicts to the most successful ones.
Presumably, the mountainhome regent simply accepts that the prisoners are being justice'd based on the liason's reports.

For all that a fortress is, it would certainly explain the position the dwarves who go there are in. Also it would explain the mountainhome's indifference towards the fate of a single fortress.

I am now going to make a fortress where dwarven living facilities are purposely prison-like.

I always used my lead for making toys which I would trade to the elves for exotic foreign booze.

I once got a cave creature that comforted my mourning dwarves and relieved the fortress of a terrible burden; a cave-strangler climbed out of the well in the hospital (Somehow?) and strangled all the cripples to death in their hospital beds.

It was probably interesting from the crippled dwarves' perspective: laying alone in the hospital ward at night, when something black and shambling crawls out of the well and starts systematically strangling all the other dwarves in hospital beds to death, only being able to lay there and watch due to your wounds.

That was a good fortress.

How are you going to go about making a plumbing system? What will its purpose be?

You should make hot/cold showers for dwarves in their apartments! The "Hot" lever scalds them horrifically with steam and the cold lever floods the room.

My legendary weaponsmith, who wandered out onto the draw-bridge where he had no business being while there was a migrant wave force of darkness in disguise approaching the fortress. I couldn't figure out what happened to him until I found his corpse laying about the caverns...

The worst part is that he had made my favourite artifact, too: A bismuth bronze mace that menaced with spikes of bronze. So simple. So elegant.

Isn't that crazy bad for FPS?

Grand avenues? Probably.

BUT WITHOUT GRAND AVENUES, WHERE WILL THE SOLDIERS MARCH??

HAUSSMANN RENNOVATIONS FOR ALL FORTRESSES!

I dunno why, but I prefer to have my crap on one Z-level-
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The dwarves all got to share a bedroom with some other dorf- the bedrooms each had their own office and bedrooms, and an aquarium view.

The dining rooms are near the top, and the left one served food and the right served booze. (And also modded in coffee and tea.) There was going to be a row of BRONZE chairs sitting along the green glass tables, which looked outside to the next dining room. (ALL chairs in the fortress were bronze. This is one of the reasons production was going so slowly- I did not have tin.)

The trade depot is in the center, and there are some unfurnished noble rooms near the center as well.

These were the tombs:

I think these were going to be bedrooms:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Masterwork Dwarf Fortress
« on: March 13, 2013, 10:59:08 pm »
If you really want to know the specifics, you could nose around the raws. You can find the armor raws for Masterwork in MasterworkDF 2f\Dwarf Fortress\raw\objects and in a folder named, item_armor_masterwork.txt.

You could probably find the weapon thing your moody dorf made under item_weapon_masterwork.

Once you've navigated there, you can press ctrl+f and just search for whatever particular armor you're looking for.

Note that it will take a bit of trawling, most likely, as items are not always in their logical places. After a bit, though you should become pretty comfortable with perusing the raws.

Does it count as combat if the unit is fighting against the laws of nature? and losing

It fits nearly any normal Dwarven machination, though.

Believe it or not, this thread isn't about what people do behind closed doors.
