DF General Discussion / ASCII or Tileset Use
« on: January 12, 2023, 02:05:30 am »
DF got its steam release with a whole new default graphics tileset and shortly afterwards had an ASCII 'classic' tileset addition implemented. I, personally prefer the ASCII for a variety of reasons, performance notwithstanding. This left me wondering, though...

What graphics do the current DF players prefer?
Do you prefer to use a tileset or ASCII graphics?

The fortresses are penal colonies.

The mountainhome has far too many degenerates too deal with by itself, so it sends out minor nobles to establish penal colonies across the world.
Condemned dwarves are escorted to a certain point in the wilderness, given directions to the fortress, and left to themselves; if they don't make it, the wilderness will surely claim their lives.

The number of convicts arriving varies based on how much wealth you export; the mountainhome expects the penal colonies to provide them with industry, and thus sends the most convicts to the most successful ones.
Presumably, the mountainhome regent simply accepts that the prisoners are being justice'd based on the liason's reports.

For all that a fortress is, it would certainly explain the position the dwarves who go there are in. Also it would explain the mountainhome's indifference towards the fate of a single fortress.

I am now going to make a fortress where dwarven living facilities are purposely prison-like.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / If fortresses had a clown position
« on: March 16, 2012, 10:51:37 pm »
In the nobles list, appointable by yourself,

Where the object was not to tell jokes, but rather faff about all day perform physical comedy, as-per certain medieval jesters,

What would the dwarves who occupied that position do differently?

So I copied the latest DF version (34.05) over my old Dig Deeper folder (taboo, I know), and then added a rapier weapon to my dwarves, elves, and humans.
As a note, I let the pasted in files overwrite EVERY file there, so much/most of the DD information was removed, and the raws for basic creatures and entity_default were the standard.

...and genned a world.

I decided to test whether it had that annoying crash I sometimes got in adventure mode when talking to people, so I  started playing it in adventure mode.

I could play as a goblin, kobold, elf, or human outsider.
"DAMN!", thought I "All of the dwarves and humans must have died...." but then I thought "Wait... goblins and kobolds? I can adventure as those without lots of raw editing?"

I decided to play as an elf.  I started off outside a mundane house, and thought "Huh. I wonder who built the houses if there are no humans?"
So I went inside. It was filled entirely with goblins. I approached a goblin miner and talked to him. The discussion was quite normal. He told me about his capital, where a gremlin lived, and to kill a gremlin master in some camp north of here.

Going to the fast travel screen, I found that I was in a town entirely populated by goblins, and that there were many other towns populated by goblins nearby.

Then, confused, I walked off to a nearby castle, which was entirely filled with goblin soldiers, and some goblin peasants were in the lords room.  Then I retired, and decided to embark.

Then it got even stranger.

I embarked with seven elves, which had no access to dogs, so I only brought cats.  Then I ordered my elves to mine out the side of a nearby mountain, build a mechanic's workshop, and make mechanisms, which they did.

Is this possible with entity_default being the default entity_default? The only thing I changed after pasting over DD was that I gave humans, elves, and goblins access to a new weapon, the rapier.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Can't leave the travel screen
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:52:01 pm »
I cannot leave the travel screen.

I can enter it normally using "T", but pressing "T" again or using ">" does not let me leave.

It is terrible.  Seemingly the only way I can leave is by being attacked.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What does my posessed dwarf want?
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:38:58 pm »
So one of my dwarves was posessed. I noticed that he wasn't claiming any workshops so I started building some. Then I build some more. And some more.

Now I have at least one of every workshop, excluding

A quern, a millstone, a butcher's shop, a still, a farmer's workshop, a kitchen, a fishery, an ashery, a dyer's shop, a soap maker's workshop, and a screw press.

But he won't claim anything.

What does my dwarf want?!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven horror stories
« on: December 09, 2011, 02:15:07 am »
There are plenty of general story threads, but now how about a horror story thread-

Tell us tales of some of the most terrifying and gruesome things to occur within your fortresses. Send chills down spines.

I'll start-

In one of my most well-developed fortresses, deep within, in the hospital,
a reacher
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
crawled out of the well in the center of the hospital, and strangled the three dwarves resting in the hospital beds, one-by-one.
Dwarves could hear their screams echoing down the long stone hallway leading to the hospital.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf-child prodigy
« on: November 25, 2011, 02:47:23 pm »
So I was scrolling through my units list today, only to find a child with a flashing name,

"What's this," I thought, "A child that has become legendary in some menial skill?

I was surprised to find

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After seeing how he was legendary in pretty much all social skills, I decided the name "Yuri" was fitting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Well at least he has refined tastes.

He is also friends with forty members of the fortress, all but three-
and he's only three.

So what should I do with this dwarf-child prodigy? Make him mayor? Send him off to achieve world-peace? Trick the humans into becoming a slave race? Throw lots of parties and get crunk?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do you design your bedrooms?
« on: September 25, 2011, 01:28:35 pm »
I want to know, because I keep trying multiple ways to go about giving my dwarves rooms. Mostly they fail, because there always end up being far too many rooms to dream of finishing, and I always try to fill each and every one with high-quality furniture.

Also the style of the room. Is it a 2x2 closet or bigger?

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/LaVeillee.png -This was my last attempt at giving my dwarves rooms, but I gave up and just used those for nobles. The general design was that each dwarf got three rooms- a bedroom, dining room, and study.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/returniwilltooldbrazil.png -This is the design I default to when my population becomes hopelessly large. It is fairly space-efficient, is aesthetically pleasing enough to satisfy me, and holds one bed, one dresser, and a chair. I found the design on the wiki one day and liked it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fortress layout help
« on: September 22, 2011, 01:38:26 am »
My fortresses generally result in everyone being dead (More quickly than I'd like), and I'd like critique on my designs, and perhaps some insight on how you build your fortress!

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/smilewithyou.png
Oldest fortress I have a picture of. I think it was made in the last version before the bug update.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/Voulez-vous.png
The fortress immediately afterwards, and I think when I fell in love with mountains.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/Onthegrooooooooooouuuuunnnnd.png
This was in the early stages of a fortress made in a rocky badland. In the end I think a siege stabbed everyone in the face. Also one of my first fortresses to try using a pit-fall bridge defense system.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/returniwilltooldbrazil.png
This fortress is only a few months old- It ended in a tantrum spiral and three forgotten beasts running amok.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv350/Doughnut189/LaVeillee.png
I only lost this fortress the other day when my dwarves were too slow to pull the lever and so many trolls got past the retracting bridge. Eventually said trolls were killed, but after that the bridge was extended and dropped, and sadly the pit had not been entirely lined with spikes yet so I had to send the military in the pit to finish the goblins off, but a bunch of marksgoblins stood at the top of the pit and rained arrows on them. Then everyone ran in to get socks and got covered in arrows.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Be a Urist Holmes- Mysterious death log
« on: September 20, 2011, 03:28:42 pm »
So in one of my old fortresses that I had (well not that old, current version), many mysterious deaths occurred around and about the fortress, but I never found out what caused the deaths. I kept a log, but forgot about it, and just remembered it again.

I am hoping that one of you might be able to figure out what caused my dwarves to ded

MYSTERIOUS DEATH LOG:

...after the second mysterious death, I have decided to keep a log to better understand the cause(s) of these grim happenings.

26th Granite, 271-
Brueck Weltseite, Fisherdwarf has bled to death.
DETAILS: Much like last time, he was found in a large pool of his own blood, having bled to death with a trail of his own blood leading towards nowhere in particular and then stopping. There are no clues as to who or what killed him.
NOTES: Somewhat far from the fortress, in an area he had no need to be in.

21st Hematite, 271-
Procellana Ventussono, an Elven Merchant was found dead near the trade post.  The elves had recently packed up and left to go trade elsewhere, but, oddly, one Elven corpse remains.  I cannot see what killed it, or why the other merchants did not help. It simply lies in a small pool of blood near the trade post. There are no hints as to what may have done it.
NOTES: Give the Elves a good deal next season, as to deter hostilities.

8th Galena, 272-
Mekhokh Meskherhesfer, Mechanic has bled to death.
DETAILS: Same as the rest. Found having bled to death at the end of a trail of his own blood about 10 squares long.
NOTES: I was really hoping whatever was doing this had gone away. It's been over a year since the last incident. The corpse had a water covering on it, yet was not near water. No blood trail, or blood in/leading to any water source.

6th Galena, 272-
A pool of blood belonging to a dwarf of an unfamiliar name (probably a trader) with a bloody battle axe lying in it has been discovered. Given the fact that the pool contains a battle axe, and the fact that no dwarves in the fortress have it, this reinforces my opinion that it was a trader. What is worrysome, however, is that NO corpse is present, or nearby. There is only ONE puddle of blood, with an axe lying in it. The axe further worries me, because it gives me the idea that the trader was a warrior, guarding the caravan. I shudder to think what could kill a warrior, dispose of it's corpse, and do all of this without bloodying more than one tile.
NOTES: All of the deaths of this sort have been concentrated near the enterance to the fortress.

10th Felsite, 274-
DETAILS: Today major strides were made in finding a culprit.  Two dwarves were killed within close proximity to one another, but another one was still living and could be examined before their death from blood loss. The dwarf was bleeding all over, as expected, but, interestingly enough, most, if not all of the bleeding body parts were melted as well. Considering the nature of the incidents, could a dragon be responsible?
NOTES: Build more sarcophagi

11th Felsite, 274-
Large number of dwarves injured in aformentioned attack. Many dead. Will see how things continue. X8X X9X X10X 11 dead from single, quite short attack, and counting.
NOTES: Syndrome?

-Due to the nature of the incidents, this log will now keep track of all important events in the fortress, to better understand the incidents.

17th Felsite, 274-
Fortress on verge of tantrum spiral due to previous slaughter. Elven caravan just arrived. Will buy best booze.
...
Siege shortly after arrival of elven caravan. Will do best to hold off- provided no dwarves tantrum the defense system should deal with them.
...
Elven merchants slaughtered by the same thing causing the other deaths. Killed right in front of my eyes and I could not see what did it. Killed one water buffalo and two elves. Hope elves do not declare war.

18th Felsite, 274-
Sudden troll rampage unrelated to siege. Large group running directly towards fortress.

28th Felsite, 274-
Siege defeated, but at a price. 16 dead, and minor tantrum spiral occuring.

1st Hemetite, 274-
Trolls somehow escaped trap system after being underwater for several days. Broke down door. Rampaging in fortress. Tantrum spiral. All miserable. Sealing myself off in archives.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help me get my dwarves hammered.
« on: August 28, 2011, 05:47:31 pm »
Hammered as in drunk, not as in failing to make slade cufflinks.

But then they are hammered in both definitions so often!

Anyway. The point of this thread is...

I want to make a new type of booze for my dorfs to enjoy. Specifically absinthe.

How would I go about the raws, as far as making the plant wormwood, from which it is brewed?
and making the resulting drink?

I tried fooling around with the raws once, hoping to make a super-race with golden skin and molten-gold blood. It resulted in crashing.
