Apparently this is planned.  :)

A nice little necro. This thread was somewhat old.

In DF talk 8, Toady One says that gunpowder is possible...
Quote from: Toady One
Where we were on that is that we are not against coding up the code necessary to get that kind of thing to work; at the very least just blowing the crap out of things. Maybe not making a gun or something but blowing the crap out of things. That probably wouldn't be in the most vanilla vanilla Dwarf Fortress
...but probably wouldn't be in most default Dorf Fort.

Ah! Thank you.
I do so enjoy writing, but I don't really have anyone to read it through. I've taken your criticism on board, and changed my text a bit.

To me , it feels kind of odd in the midst of all this talk about decay and stuff that suddenly you're talking about being a 'young girl in a short and rather attractive red dress'? It rather interupts the whole flow of death and decay you had going.

You seem to talk about the sky being blood coloured a bit much. Also, it could sound better to contrast the environment with the character, so rather than a red dress possibly mention that you got your blue dress caught on a rusty spike or something. I try to show, not tell (though I don't know if i succeed) which is rather common advice.

The idea that everything is broken up but there's loads of spinning saw blades everywhere seems odd to me. Surely they should all have broken and snapped off?

Is the guy there? At the end it seems like she's right there with the bloke than in his rough location.

If you're in to contrast, at all, possibly consider having a woman as well be the corrupting influence instead of a man. As women are more often seen as the bringers of new life, it makes a nice opposite to have a woman as the source of decay and rot.

What is 'the round?'

My own thoughts on the piece.

I thought that the grass wold be a kind of wheat o something like that, so I was planning on making flour out of it, but we can figure it later.
If by "wattle-and-daub" you mean a kind of secretion our insects make, we could use it as some sort of glue, but I doubt that it would be suitable for a wall.

Its more a kind of reinforced mud wall. The grass strands can be woven together into a lattice. This lattice is then covered in a mixture of mud and straw (also sand, if we have it.). Once it dries it's a convenient, reasonably solid wall. We'll have to roof it over at some point, but it's definitely a way to make a wall with less wood, so it'll save time and effort (And available timber.)This has been used to construct buildings for, oh, at least 5000-6000 years. Far as I know it's still used today by tribal people and aborigines.

Wheat is a domesticated form of grass, so we can definitely make flour out of it at some point. Of course, depending on what we bugs can eat, we may not need to, as flour and bread are just ways of making it more human-friendly for consumption.

Yeah, more workers. Plant Stringy Tendrils (Tendril Strings?)
Try to get to stone, and make some stone tools.

I'm still voting for my grass-weaving idea. Its worth a try, and some storage containers can't hurt. Maybe we can use wattle-and-daub to make the walls to mount the door.

No, sorry.  Turns out that you should check if things posted after getting gateway errors.
Ah, fair enough. Just it had been over a week since the last comment, so i thought it best to prod the corpse, as it were.

Put the strands in your hospital to use for suturing, obviously.

What seeds do we actually have then? Harvesting grass in large quantities will allow us to dry it (if it indeed needs drying) and weave it into various things, like storage baskets, reinforcement for building walls (wattle and daub), even basic ropes, depending on the grass. If nothing else it can be kept as long-term food for us hivemen or for the bison, once we've captured them.
Actually, we could use grass fibers to create traps, see if we can capture some small animals (like rabbit-equivalents) for domestication or immediate processing.

If you embarked on a fort completely surrounded by water - all the edge tiles of the map where ocean or somewuch - AFAIK you will not get migrants. If, though, you build a bridge to the edge of the map, will you then get migrants or caravans?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Color and armor
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:52:54 am »
Colour applies to all items, and can be used as a workaround to equip bone or shell or leather items in equipment options that don't list that particular material.

Can you explain this? I'm not sure I understand, and I've always wondered what the possible uses of this setting are.
me too, I'm guessing is something like "white" whatever forces the dwarf to pick bone items and brown for leather, but an actual example would be great, 1st time I also hear of this workaround.
That is correct.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cage traps; weapons of armageddon?
« on: February 03, 2013, 06:21:17 pm »
I reckon their should be a size limit to cage traps, much like bridges. Larger than a human - maybe troll size, even, but above that, cage traps fail to catch them when they trigger. So the enemy could use a charge of rutherers to clear out your cage traps in order to let the footgoblins attack en masse without worry.
