The van den Borre family was once powerful and prosperous, a close ally of the royal family.

That alliance led them to bloody rebellion, to rescue the Princess from her cage. It led them to defeat. The family hold lies empty and ruined; the forges are cold and ash-filled. Pompous strangers oversee the fields that were once theirs.

Eloïse wasn't born in the glory days of her family, before the fall. She's grown up with an empty belly, filled with little more than stories of what used to be; of the family she lost in battle before she could know them, of the rightful place they should hold. Her grandfather, the first to fall in the Revolt. Her own father, Ruben, slain before he ever knew he would be a parent. Great uncle Pieter. Aunt Melissa. Cousins Emiel, Kathleen, Hanne, Pascal, Hadrien.

Her aunt, Priscilla, the last to fall, at the gates of the Palace itself, mere metres away from Dermaut.

Deep in the Copper Mountains, the tattered remnants of the van den Borres live on, their hearts bitter and armour rusting, little more than bandits, now. For twenty years, they have lurked in the deep forests and dark caves of their ancestral mountains, only emerging to conduct quick raids and lightning strikes. Forces sent to hunt them down disappear or find nothing, but the van den Borres also pose no true threat to the current regime as they are. Thus, a stalemate has emerged: the Borres aren't worth the cost of hunting down in truth, but lack the power to reconquer what they lost.

They've heard of this new pretender to the throne, but once bitten, twice shy; they won't commit their diminished forces to a final fight they think they might lose. Thus comes Eloïse: clad in a battered, horned helm, she's come to see if there's anything to this Cedric, or if his bones will join those other rebels mouldering in the ground.
