General Discussion / Re: Holy shit Japan....
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:22:03 am »One question: when they speak about 400 mSievert, over which period of time is it? A second, a minute, a day?
I thinks it's per hour but I could be wrong.

The spent fuel pools are probably more dangerous than the reactors at this point.

Things are getting so bad that ordinary police are firing water cannons into the reactors.

It's impossible to tell the difference between poor available information, incompetence, conspiracy, or just everyone there being too busy to give status updates. All sorts of theories get bantered about in the meantime.
Amazing that it's gone on as long as it has.

Well thanks Tell, you really know how to make me look like a fool.

This whole damn thing makes me look like a fool. Accurate information is hard to find in times of crisis.

They went back....
No indication of whether they went back because radiation levels fell, or if it's a suicide mission...

I can't vouch for the integrity of this source.
Edit: Ok now the story is up on Yahoo.

« on: March 15, 2011, 07:54:22 pm »It's probably a watermark of trading's irrationality, but I wouldn't take it for much else. Much of the trading right now is utterly predatory, and is going to flip on every development. Including market reports.
Highly possible.
Anyway I don't see that blurb on Yahoo anymore. May have been inaccurate? No way of knowing.

Yahoo has at their main page that the fire at the plant is out, but they don't have a link to a source yet.
Edit: The Nikkei is up over 6% right now. That's a good sign that some of the panic may be abating.
I know it could look a bit callous to follow the financial markets at a time like this, but they are a good gauge of fear.

Life Advice / Re: Trouble with seeing doctors
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:48:26 pm »
I haven't been to the doctor in almost 8 years. It helps that I haven't had any serious health problems.
Doctors don't make any money by actually curing people. They make their money by dragging out treatment and making you suffer.

General Discussion / Re: Egypt and the world
« on: March 15, 2011, 04:56:46 pm »I looked at Bahraini law because of the events going on recently, and found that compared to Saudi Arabia they're actually somewhat progressive (women were given voting rights in 2002, for example). Although, when you're comparing civil and human rights with Saudi Arabia, you're probably going to look decent unless you're North Korea.
Of course when elected officials don't have much power you can expand the suffrage to whoever you want and nothing will change.
