Dwarves can write on scrolls just like quires.  Quires can be made into books but scrolls can't.

I've also noticed that visitors might bring scrolls with them, which are generally letters or poems and not science related.

Are you sure he didn't get into a barfight and got punched in the stomach?  That would cause vomiting.  Check your combat logs.

Had a fistfight and my legendary minor took serious injuries, and later died from them.  No murder charges or anything with justice.

A sheriff or fortress guard in the tavern should be able to break up fist fights and bring the instigator to jail or beat him.

Is it possible that a dwarf got into a bar fight, took serious injuries and died from it at some later point?  That happened to me once already.  Dwarves can vomit when they take a beating to their stomach or guts.

Copying of books seems to be the bug, not the writing of originals.  I don't know what the trigger is for writing an original book, but it requires a quire or scroll in the library, plus an empty table or chair.

I find that you need a lot of table and chairs in your library.  Dwarves read books at them, and sometimes eat there too.  I don't think they can start a writing job if there's no available space.

There's no way to assign books to a library.  You can make one library accessible only to citizens and a library accessible to everyone, and put scribes in the citizen only library and hope they copy enough books for use for everyone.  This would probably keep random traveling scholars from stealing your originals or something.

I've had distracted tamed giant cave swallows but they didn't seem to act any differently than anything else.

Barkeepers work best when there is a designated booze stockpile somewhere within the tavern.

I like to have a large booze stockpile near my stills, and a small stockpile in the tavern linked to the large one.
