DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What has DF made you

DF taught me to move my moral goalposts.

Also RIP bullfrog. i miss DK too :(

Fun with picking embark sites. My latest embark was joyous wilds praerie alongide a haunted ocean. I figure what can go wrong. I shouldn't be in any danger. All the nasty stuff will be in the ocean and not on the land with my dwarves.

Shortly after digging out my tempory storage my beachside wagon was attacked by an undead pod of killer whales that had rushed out of the ocean to happily murder my dwarves. I also learnt dogs aren't that good for basic defence anymore.

Dear Urist McVampire

While you are an interesting addition to my fort, and very popular too as your new position as mayor indicates, I am having doubts about your place within our community.
You see that it has come to my attention that not only have you drained the blood of my legendary miner (one of the founding seven who will be sorely missed), you have now also drained my legendary weaponsmith of his vital fluids. The legendary weaponsmith who forged that lovely artefact axe. The lovely artefact axe that his friend, Urist McAxelord, is introducing to the limbs of the assembled dwarves in the meeting hall.

Assuming there are any survivors, I would like it if you would keep your blood draining relegated to those worthless migrants i have sitting upstairs on the soil layer. Nobody will miss them, especially not bearded avatars of axe-based death. In fact if it wasn't for the fact that your death would likely inspire more tantrums i would have you chained outside as a gift to the next goblin siege.

PS. Don't grow too attached to that cat. A fort can never have enough cat-bone crossbow bolts.

What would the semi-molten rock be?

I usually embark with unskilled dwarves, a ton of booze, some supplies to make picks/axes and about 18+ dogs for basic defence/food. had one embark where they brutally ripped a werewolf to bits, and only one dog was injured (and then butchered for food)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Lost my first fort

I read up fairly well on the subjects so my first fort managed to last until the first goblin ambush near the end of year 2.

Now I've taken to embarking in terrifying biomes. My first four embarks have all fallen within the space of a half of an hour, with the fastest one falling in a minuscule 3 minutes due to a combination of skeletal horses and skeletal giant badgers.

I have similar issues due to my habbit of loving the evil biomes too. Quick question though, do skeletal bagers (and their giant versions) still enrage? if so i may need ot try capture some

anyways my first fort was lost to dehydration. Desert embark and ran out of booze (no trees to make barrels to make booze in).

Setting up in a haunter biome, and putting off walling in a bit too long.

250 early spring the fortress of Brainslow was founded.
250 mid spring the fortress of Brainslow withered.

the local ogres were curious. too curious.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where do you put your trade depots?
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:27:04 am »
just inside the entrance* to my fortress, near my military garrison and training area, with a corridor lined with traps between it and the rest of my fort. Also its airtight and linked to a reservoir supplied by aquafirs, just in case i need to wash the filth** out of it. It's also connected to the happy fun room*** when i want to giggle before washign it clean. Once i work out a how to make a decontamination chamber i'll be adding that in for them to pass through too. I use bridges in place of walls at some points between the depot and my stockpile, so when traders come i can lower them and have a much faster route to the depot for my dwarves

*deep underground with a stairway to the surface and access to the caverns. i like to have one entrance point for both cavern fun and surface fun.

First time making a waterfall. With pressurised magma. Perhaps diggin the sleeping quarters and food stores in the lower levels wasn't such a good idea. I learnt the value of adding in a sewer system between each level though :P

Tantrum spiral resulting in lots of dead dwarves with main gate open and goblins pouring in. I learnt the hard way not to assign war animals to the military. Urist McLegendaryAxeDorf got a tad bit pissed off when his dogs kept dying. He killed 3/4 of the fort by himself before a lucky crossbow bolt was introduced to his face.

Next time i'm building extra safety measures to be able to quaratine various parts of the fort from eachother. That and i'll be replacing war animals with useless migrants as cannon fodder.

Also, first post wheee :D
