DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Coffins for pets? Come on
« on: November 24, 2011, 01:50:57 pm »
I think it's cute that my dwarves feel a need to honor their dead pets like their dwarven kin. It shows that, even though they can be insane, sadistic, or down right retarded, they can still show love for something other than they're own kind.

Maybe, someday, if we really try, we can live in a world love and cooperation. A world where dwarves, goblins, humans, and even elves, can see the futility of such savagery, lay down their arms, and join hands, as brothers and sisters. Maybe, one day, we truly can have peace.

Until then, load up the traps, forge some more gear, and make sure you have plenty of room in your refuse stockpile. There'll be another, bigger, less-than-friendly siege on its way before too long, and by the time it's over, there's gonna be one hell of a mess to clean.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Retire Wounded Soldiers?
« on: November 23, 2011, 11:35:38 pm »
I mostly dislike withdrawing them from military service because I imagine it would quite a depressing thing for them to go through. Years of dedication to their combat skills, only to be shoved aside by a new recruit because they failed to dodge that one arrow from a bowgoblin.

They always seem so happy right after getting back from a good battle. That innocent, childlike amusement they get from taking joy in slaughter, I don't have the heart to take that away from them.

I'm survived kobolds even live that long. I imagine them living a shorter lifespan than humans... say, 30-60 years.

I know, I'm survived, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ambush! What do i do?

Actually, what he seems to be saying is something more along the lines of, "what's the point of playing if you're just going to cheat your way out of the tough situations?".

Of course, I may be interpreting it wrong.

I may have this wrong, but it seems to me that there isn't much point of playing if your entire fortress is wiped out by the first ambush. It isn't as if it is realistic for goblins to come out of the wilderness to completely obliterate every random gathering of thirty dwarves. It seems to me, at least, that Toybasher is only delaying the ambushes until (a.) He is able to have a chance of defeating them or (b.) He understands the game better.

Not much point? Having your ill-prepared fortresses meet a swift and gruesome end gives even more of a point to the game. You learn to build faster and better, develop a strategy to overcome the challenges. Victory just isn't as sweet without knowing the bitter taste of failure.

And as for realism, we're playing as dwarves, my friend. Dwarves who are able to build impenetrable walls of soap, and remove items from existence by lowering a drawbridge onto them. Realism is not this game's strongest leg, so to speak..

DF Suggestions / Re: Changing the View In Fortress Mode

Not very useful gameplay wise, but definitely something I'd probably use often for construction, or nice change of perspective. If it's something Toady threw into one of the releases, I certainly wouldn't mind it. I do love my aesthetics, after all.

Oh, geez, you cheated your way out of your first ever ambush? You're on the path to the dark side, and I don't mean the cool, shiny black dark side, I mean the cold, damp, sticky dark side that has to rely on cheating to do everything. But it's not too late to save yourself! Next time, go ahead and let them get slaughtered if you're completely unprepared, and maybe learn a thing or two so you can prevent it next time. Or else you'll end up making reactions to turn stones into booze because you can't be bothered to learn how to grow plump helmets when you run out of booze in the middle of winter and your dwarves start dying of thirst.

Losing is FUN! Embrace it. Learn from it. Face it again and beat it!

Or admit you can't handle Dwarf Fortress and go back to playing Farmville.

(Boy, do I sound bitter or what? Don't take the above too seriously. But geez, you cheated your way out of your first ever ambush?)

I'm so glad I didn't have to be the one to say it. Though you should probably get ready for a bunch of "it's a single player game, there's no such thing as cheating" responses.

DF General Discussion / Re: If You Could Choose One Thing
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:31:08 pm »
Yeah, something tells me Dwarf Fortress players might become a lot less...dwarfy, if the graphics were more lifelike.

Go into DF as an innocent and curious individual, looking to pass some time, come out as a broken and battle scarred dwarf, with adequate striking and PTSD, spending the the rest of your life locked away in your room, not really caring about anything anymore.

Oh. Well yeah. Im mostly conserned that having a necromancer doesnt bring enough danger and difficulty to your fort.

Well I never said there wouldn't still be enemy necromancers as well. You can't tell me two necromancers having a zombie fight, constantly reanimating their fallen warriors, wouldn't be badass.
Or, have fort necromancers make macabre demands in exchange for their services(bones, bodies, blood, ect.), and if they're not met they'll throw a tantrum and sic their undead horde on you.

There are more than enough ways to make your friendly neighborhood necromancer a threat to your fort's well being.

Don't listen to those naysayers! You'll get UristMcHorriblymangled to work again, it will just take considerable amounts of effort, time, and resources! He can pull through!

I said the fort dwelling necromancers could stick ghosties back into physical bodies, that sort of keeps it on topic.

Hell, you don't even have to defeat all of 'em. Just off enough of them to demoralize the squad, and the rest will head for the map edge quicker than a dwarf to a booze stockpile.

No idea. I think you should use the inevitable bloodshed as a valuable learning experience, though. You could always reclaim afterward.
