What I want to see is being able to have friendly necromancers within my fort, who can interact with the ghosts wandering around my fort. Maybe be able to stick them into a new body, or help them over to the other side, or simply keep them peaceful while I build more sarcophagi.

Actually, what would be really cool is having a necromancer be a type of noble who is able to give you a level of control over your ghostly inhabitants, depending on his necromancy level. If he's good at it, he should be able to convince the ghosts to do just about anything, if he's pretty bad at it, there's a chance he will only make them angrier.
I dono. Sounds awfuly overpowered. I dot think necromacers would be something the general population would want.  Especially once faith and religion come in.

I don't think it would be too bad, they would mostly just like consolers for the dead, add the possibility of making a ghost go berserk if the necromancer screws up, and it would be pretty interesting. And I'm sure necromancers would be welcomed into almost any sensible fortress. Dwarves could even get happy thoughts from visiting with them and being able to talk to dead loved ones.

Think of a fun/clever way to defeat the little green ones using a wacky assortment of dwarven mechanics, or make a bunch of squads and fill them with as many dwarves as you can, then dogpile the ambush and hope for the best. Alternatively, you could always...you know, lose.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Runesmith has something along the lines of an insta-death tool.

Well I know what I'm bringing with me if I'm ever locked in a deadly space battle with aliens.

The new recruit, actually. Urist McCrippledvet has a lot of history behind him, grand stories of surviving battles long past, and the scars to show for it. Urist McFreshblood has yet to prove himself on the battlefield, and can be more easily replaced should his performance be less than ideal.

Magma.

Also, requesting logs from the liaison, and buying them from my pointy-eared bros.

I have a macedwarf, Kel Roldethadil(Anguishwall), who lost his ability to stand some time ago. He's the militia captain of his squad.
Not because he's an amazing soldier or anything, he gets about one kill a year. But because, by the time he makes it to the fight, his squad members have already been killed, and the attacking force has been driven off.

Moral of the story:
No matter how injured your soldiers are, they can still attain greatness.

The main thing I've learned about iron in my time within the realm of Dwarf Fortress is this:

You either have absolutely none of it whatsoever, or you have so much that you could use it to make everything in your fortress for the next couple decades. As far as I know, there is no middle ground.

Going after the Diablos on Monster Hunter Tri. I got my ass handed to me by that screeching motherfucker so many times. Even after up my strategy each attempt, it just kept fucking destroying me. This especially sucks when you've been going up against it for god knows how long, you can it's about to die, and it rages on you before you can even drink a goddamn mega potion.

Also for MH3, going up against that huge ass sand dragon(forgot it's name) that only comes around every so often, getting extremely close to finally defeating it, but having the whole hunt get fucked over by a single inexperienced guy in your party who keeps dying.

And I can't believe no one has mentioned this one:

Those energy sword wielding assholes in Halo.

Get rid of them? I don't have enough of the little bastards!

There is no such thing as a useless dwarf here at Gorerape! Spent your life training up that dandy cheesemaking skill I have no use for? How about taking up a new hobby like farming gardening, masonry sculpting, or hauling a bunch of crap some healthy weightlifting?

Also, all dwarves here receive a wonderful 5x10 bedroom, complete with a cabinet, coffer, and rapidly spreading cave moss lovely, natural carpet flooring! Of course, you might have to wait a year or two before the room is actually built...but once it is, you can rest assured it will be grand!

You may want to take a peek at the pinnacle deities, maksymka. I fear Istrath may simply be a denomination of one of them.

I am amazed by your tenacity in continuing to divert my eventual victory. Respectable, yet futile.

One more batch before I'm off for the night:

A memory.

A lullaby.

A padded room.

Mild disappointment.

Poetry.

Your username.

Luck.

Peace of mind.
