DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 25, 2012, 03:16:22 am »
My fortress of Asdoskol has 220 citizens; 94 of which are children and babies. We have only 126, 124 , 123 effective adult dwarves (two have grasping injuries) We are now moving at a pace that makes me look at the movements of glaciers and tectonic plates with envy. We found our vampire, big surprise it was the mayor.  He is now a vampire mayor that still has over 1000 days in prison. The liaison can't talk to him until his prison sentence is up meaning I can't order wood and coke for my furnaces. I have trapped six kangaroos, a named wolverine, and a giant wombat mount. None of which can be tamed and turned into meat for the fortress. I don't know where the kangaroos came from. I set up those traps for the perfectly tameable wild horses and mountain goats who have vanished.

On the plus side my marks-dwarf squads are the best yet, I have them packed into a 7x2 fortified training room over the gate and every snatcher, ambush, Kea, and buzzard is targeted by at least 15 dwarves with full quivers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: are siege engines useful in DF2012?
« on: February 25, 2012, 01:43:45 am »
Ballista were once the leading cause of death among children in my fortresses. We'd get sieged and one of the operators had seven kids, every time we fired, one would sit on the business end and take a steel-tipped tree trunk to the skull. Sieges murdered my frame rate so I got to watch it all in 2 fps as the bolt passed through the child and swerved to avoid a tight group of goblin archers.
Catapults were great for getting rid of stone, I used to launch it off the edges of the map, they were absolutely garbage for actually killing anything. They had all the damage of a bullshit stone-fall trap with none of the accuracy or convenience.
If they fired in an arc at predetermined areas (marked by a special building maybe) and caused a small area effect like a cave-in and packed the power of a solid hit with a blunt weapon or were capable of being loaded with specialized ammo (like an iron barrel or orthoclase pot full of magma) then they might be of more use than transporting stone.

You'd think the elves would just eat all the other races to keep fed ???. Some races never get past the rocks are/are not edible phase of development.

Channel out the floor in that little room above the sections flooded by magma and around the spoilerite spire then pipe water into the room from an underground lake if you have one. Make sure to install two floodgates at each end of the pipe so you can control the flow of water more precisely as it only takes a 1/7 layer of water. The water will obsidianize the exposed magma creating a solid plug that you can dig around in. You can repeat this for each layer of the spoilerite spire.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Imprisoned Vampire Elected Mayor
« on: February 23, 2012, 04:00:58 am »
I have a vampire mayor who was sentenced to over 3 years. I locked the door to her cell and only let in the liaison. Vampires can't starve or die of thirst it seems, and when their imprisoned they can't talk to the liaisons so by the time her sentence is up I expect to have quite a que built up.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Vampire CSI

My god...it was the mayor all along, my setup worked for once, now I've got him locked in a cell with a chain made by one of his victims. I can pipe magma directly into cell (actually any cell in the prison) but I think I'll let him live...trapped, if anyone beats him in an election I'll automatically know another vampire is in the fortress.

All I really want now is the die command.

-Another red flag is a young age for an otherwise experienced dwarf.

I have a baby who is proficient in crossbow and seven other combat disciplines. I have no idea how.

Plus one of my vampires was able to drain three dwarves in a meeting area/dorm that was also a busy hallway leading to the trade stockpile without anyone seeing a thing. Its gotten worse as I've started making bedrooms (no doors and a fortification wall) I had one drain a mother who had a baby with her. Pretty much anyone who has a desire to sleep alone has a death wish. I'm building the noble quarter now, if any of them survive I think I might have a suspect. These vampires have borked my standard protocol for living areas, I'm almost afraid to make a dining hall because idlers will go there rather than to the areas that look into the bedrooms.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What accents do you thing the dwarves have?

Mine all speak with a midwestern accent, just like the dwarves in Dragon Age.

That might be related to another incident I had where a cavy burst into flames when crossing the steel bridge across my magma moat.  These elven traders didn't get anywhere near the magma, basically I got an announcement that they arrived and then four steps later...burnination. Only the first trader got roasted the rest ran away when he died.

I have so much silk, I have 5 looms working continuously to try to keep the webs cut back. Too bad every single mood I get fails because they want plant cloth or wool :(

I'm building my first waterwheel array that is powered by an underground lake rather than a brook or river. Big deal right?

Well it might have been an imp or a crab, but I've yet to see one, and there was no combat reports. Plus they were a long ways from the caldera, basically only 4 squares from the edge of the map.
