DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: epic final stands?
« on: April 02, 2012, 07:35:01 pm »
an epic final stand. get thrown across the room by the vampire lord I was sent to kill. upon striking the far wall, my adventurers weapon arm breaks and he loses hold of his axe and shield. in that same obstacle collision, I suffer a broken liver, kidney, and lung. the vampire finishes off the last of my hired swords and charges across the room to finish me off. taking up my axe in my good hand I rise to my feet and also charge. the vampires copper boning knife gets lodged in my chest. I make one last swing, because I know Ill be dead in a moment. the axe strikes the vampire in the lower body and the severed part sails off in an arc. the vampire is dead, and I die of suffocation on my way back down the keeps stairs. the only joy I take from my adventurers death is the image of him falling down the stairs like a slinky after he chokes to death on nothing.

cave dragons are pretty rare. in all my time playing DF, I only ever saw one. I only saw that one because I was using the DFhack reveal feature for the first time.

welcome to DF, the solution to all your issues is thus; dont try to make sense of DF, as making sense of a game with no sense is a senseless act. just try to have !!FUN!!

DF Modding / Re: Adding babies to the giant desert scorpion creature

they are very rare. their frequency is only 5 after all. this means that they show up pretty rarely, youll see one or two maybe every 4 or 5 years if your lucky. raise the frequency to something like... 30. at thirty I see them every other year or two, but they aren't so common as to be game breaking. even at 30 I still dont see them at all. if you love your sanity, do not raise it to 100. just go with 30 or 40.

when you embarked, did you check nearby civs? if so, what did the thing next to goblins look like? a red line? or did it say "no trades." if it says "no trades," that means your civ is at peace with the goblins.

I did this. I really like the desert forts. a good idea is to raise the frequency of the scorpions, because as they are, they are pretty rare. so you wont be able to support a fort on them alone. other than that, they make good killing machines, mix them with dogs and they make decent guards, and using them in general is fun. just be careful as training them will be dangerous. if they revert to a wild state, they will start stinging dwarves. have fun with it dude, desert scorpion forts are cool and fun, and sometimes !!FUN!!

Too bad they never brought me a Giant Desert Scorpion yet. I want one guarding the entrance to my fort, though I guess a GCS would work too.

no you dont. GDS dont have very good perception, so they just let snatchers and thieves through. the only way to make them effective at guarding is to group them with hunting dogs. that way, the dogs do the spotting, and the scorpions do the fighting. also, try to take careful care of them. they dont breed without altering the raws, and a couple good hammer blows can cripple or kill them easily. the plus side is, they can wrestle weapons and armor away from foes, if they grab on in the right places.

On the other hand, I can now legendary sneak, so I just sneak up to each and every one of the bandits, and shiv them repeatedly from behind until they bleed to death in a room filled with their companions.  They couldn't figure out anything was wrong because I was "hiding" as I was wrestling them in order to get a better shot with my stabity-stabs.  I got spotted a couple times, but if I just ran around a corner, I could sneak again.

It's one thing to chalk up the death screams of a companion to being just the wind, but when someone has you in a choke hold, and you don't notice something's wrong...

brings to mind a heavily armed and armored warrior walking through a room filled with bad dudes with his hand over his eyes shouting, "YOU CANT SEE ME! IM HIDING! I AM HIDING AND YOU CANNOT SEE ME!" and the bad guys just standing around looking at each other like "I guess we cant see this guy."

dwarven children = bastard crumb snatchers. they've eaten my dwarves out of house and home.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: New dangers of GCS

niņa de la tierra. potato bugs. or if you want the real name, jerusalem crickets. f&*k em. F&*K EM! they aren't dangerous or anything, but jesus christ are they ugly and strange.

bulldog ants. you know, I dont think DF has actual ants. I mean ive seen ant nests, but DF has no giant ants in it I dont think. not even after our most recent update. as for spiders though, black widows and brown recluse are bad enough. I always imagined the GCS as a huge black widow spider.

*walks in stump bandaged but still pale from bloodloss*
Ive done some experimenting by switching to different trainers every time my GDS go feral again. it appears that the more experience your trainers have, the longer the animals tameness lasts. the trouble is, getting a general familiarity is taking longer. the upside to being half tamed is that I can trade away a few of them at a time. does trading the creatures increase your civs ability to tame them?

And their skin tannable.
Counter the bad thought from a dead baby on a mother by giving her a new masterwork dwarf baby leather skirt. Preferable from her own baby.

isn't this new coat nice? does it feel familiar? its your babies skin!

ah, comedians. some of the things I hear on these forums remind of things like some of the stuff they say. but not often.
