Doomforests crumbled to it's end some years past, though Smuntsu managed to escape down the river on a raft made of soap. Miles downstream he disembarked and took up residence inside a hollowed-out highwood. A nearby population of gnomes mistook him for a forest god and now bring a monthly tribute of twine, Gnomeblight and small pebbles to the foot of the tree. He uses the twine to bind sheafs of paper into compendiums, and upon these books he uses the Gnomeblight to record twisting meta-fiction about the alternate history of Doomforests. He eats the pebbles because he isn't very bright.

At the public library, he uploads his fiction to this very forum under a series of alt-accounts. All of the elaborate sub-plots and convoluted alliances you've read are actually rhetorical devices, meant to dissuade the perceptive reader from discovering this dark secret:

We are all Smuntsu, Smuntsu is all of us.

I'm having trouble finding a suitable site. Mostly because 250 year med worlds take a while to generate. So:

The paralysis is easy: just make a self-targeting interaction with a longish cooldown, which applies a short-lived paralysis syndrome.

To create an item, you'll want to make a material emission - see the dwarf or magma crab raws for examples, and modify them to be self-targeting. You may have to play around with the properties of the material in question to keep it from harming the critter, as the material emission is usually launched at high velocity at a different target, and I'm not sure how it would react when the target is the source...

Or if you don't mind DFHackery, there's a plugin that can automatically detect when a syndrome is applied and spawn an object or creature into the game at the location of the affected creature. Dirst(?)'s mod The Earth Strikes Back is a good place to look for inspiration on how to use that.

Thanks for the tips, and for your continued Modest Mod custodianship :p MM is one of my must-downloads after every new update.

No! It is forbidden!

(Any preferences?)

Also anyone else that wants a dwarf from the starting seven named after them should let me know soon.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to set up "feeder" stockpiles properly
« on: March 16, 2016, 10:07:46 pm »
From personal experience I've found dwarves to not like moving things from a bin-using stockpile to one that has no bins. I agree that no bins make for a nice visual stock indicator, so perhaps try the setup again except without any bins anywhere.

Alright. I'll play the first turn . . ?

You guys sure are easy to please lol. Expect the new thread tonight or tomorrow, and we'll just have people claim turns as normal.

250 years medium world, on the edge of evil, giant glass middle finger. Gotcha. I'm going to up the mineral count and number of beasties. Any objections to a waterfall embark? They kill FPS for some.

As for this incarnation. . . anyone want to bring it to it's end? Perhaps write a short epitaph to the few years it lived.

So I'm interested in getting my sentient crabs to regularly molt, and then use the resulting crabshell in a smelting recipe. I've searched a bit and it seems there are two ways to go about it: give the crabs a new layer of shear-able carapace or  the [LAYS_UNUSUAL_EGGS] tag and then have some nestboxes lying about. Do these concepts apply to intelligent creatures, and might there be a more authentic way to simulate regular molting? I would be happy if they were paralyzed for about a day, then pooped out a chunk of shell.

DF General Discussion / Re: Stagnant? Doomed? Whose idea?
« on: March 16, 2016, 09:18:42 pm »
Here's my current DF cycle: I view the devlog each day. After a release I just intrinsically "know" the game is completely unplayable for 2+ months because, well, it just is.

I don't think I'm alone. I'd go so far as to say this is 'the norm'.

This is 2016. The idea of a solo dev just doing his thing and coding out a game isn't a novel idea anymore. DF runs the risk of being left behind. It's ok to acknowledge that fear.

I snipped your quote down to the points I disagree with. DF can't be left behind because it's not in the running. There's no compulsion to make a profit, meaning there's no real issue if playerbase dwindles (which it won't). The devs survive of donations, sure, but thats way different from a corporate project's need for projected profit.

I find the new updates playable because they just are.

And it's alright to be afraid but projecting that fear onto the entire playerbase seems a bit silly.

I was also the guy who said those things about the "mythology" of df's gameplay, but I said them for a different reason than you thought. The "correct" way to play DF is to generate these myths on the fly while you play, using your own imagination to construct additional narrative. A side effect of this style of play is that people misinterpret DF-based stories as entirely game-derived. To see this in action, go read Boatmurdered or some equally famous story and list out the things that actually happened in game, vs. those things that were made up for the story. That fortress was great not because of the DF game engine but because of the awesome writers and their narrative tone. The catch is that without DF they would have nothing to write about.

It's pretty much a personal opinion, but I doubt DF will ever reach the point where it can completely replace that human creativity. If you play this game for it's simulation aspects you will probably be disappointed by the interface, the bugs, and the incomplete gameplay.  If you play as if it was some magical, infinitely devourable fact-fractal from which to glean inspiration then there's not much to complain about.

Nice! Inspired by real events?

Ok. I was waiting for parzival1's input but lets go ahead with a new fortress. Those interested would have priority turns. We can call the thread crackedwalls II, and I can make it unless one of you wants the responsibility. Or a different name altogether but I like continuity.

Thoughts on a new-but-somewhat-related premise (glass-themed perhaps)? Or perhaps a more interesting embark? And who wants the first turn?

I'm pretty guud at making interesting worlds but even so, I can't guarantee goblins. We should have kept pissing off the elves to make things interesting. We can make sure of it this time.

I'm thinking we should try for another queen-led civilization, write it in as a land far, far away.

Until that final megabeast shows up or we provoke the elfs I have a feeling "uneventful year, not much to report" is going to become a pattern.

Has anyone adressed the awfully disturbing trend to promote Donald Trump as if his name itself was a meme? It's just really weird to me and I can't tell if it's ironic or serious. People will literally end conversation threads by stating some random trumpibberish as if that's all that needs to be said. It's a little creepy when some asinine statement ends up paraded around the internet like a biblical passage. I get it, Trump exudes a particularly strong brand of American "I don't really think about what I'm saying" masculinity, but when did it become alright to throw discussion out the door in favor of dank memeticism?!

Hold on, what might be the purpose of a single coin?
