Wow, I love this and am sad I missed its existence until this year!
I'm not sure if this is an unstated rule (or a stated rule that I missed), but are you allowed to enter more than one gladiator?

I would like to submit 10 kobolds in a trenchcoat as my competitor, thank you

I will edit OP. :] my apologies.

DF General Discussion / Re: On Castles and Materials.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gu%C3%A9delon_Castle

that is a contemporary castle under construction in France, worth a look for inspiration.

Typically I just commit myself to using carved stone blocks. One could insist that sufficiently large 'foundations' are sunk into the earth before you begin to raise the walls.

give yourself a time limit for each fortress so you keep on track.. it can be easy to fall in love with a particular embark and end up never filling out your world. this is coming from someone who has shared a similar dream to your own but never quite sticks to the idea.

This would solve two problems I have with pre-generated worlds with long histories. The pre-generated structures have no design and are merely complex mazes, and I can never get a full understanding of the history.

well stated, I agree with these assessments. in many ways DF reminds me of Elder Scrolls II in the way dungeons and caves are utter chaos..

another tip, review your world with legendsbrowser or some such utility and get an idea of the civilizations. you may have generated a fairly uninteresting world or a world missing certain races, that sort of thing. good to confirm it's perfect before you commit to building.

The Stupid Pattern, our winding brook.

a good name for a brook.. it suggests whoever named it had some grievances with the thing.

I was severely confused reading your list until I recalled there were modded dinosaurs kicking about your forests. it seems the dwarves are significantly more than capable of killing and eating such beasts. coffee and roast dino anyone?

Name: Nijinsky

Race: Human

Skills:

Proficient Dodger +75
Adequate Swordsman +15
Adequate Shield User +12
Competent Fighter +18

+120

Equipment:

Iron Short Sword +40
The iron sword is a plain, imperfect blade, stolen from the armory of his former master during his escape from the castle.

Highwood Shield +45
He carries a highwood shield, but it is battered and scarred from heavy use.

Leather mask +5
He wears this mask to protect his face from scars during sword duels.

+90

total = 210pts

Backstory: A dancer from the freezing highlands, Nijinsky is not known for his sanity. He eloped from his stable job as a castle guard but when the marriage fell through (she was a poet, turns out their love was just a metaphor all along) Nijinsky took up tavern dancing and has spent the last few years practicing the various traditional forms of his people.

The leather mask has fox-like ears and protects his face and upper neck. Most curiously the eyes are covered by thin circles of ruby gemstone, fashioned by dwarven gemcutters and appearing like a pair of shallow goggles, which allows for a tinted but fairly wide view from inside the mask.

Unfortunately, Nijinsky signed up thinking this was a tournament for dancers . . . a series of dance battles . . . and so will be severely confused during the first fight. Luckily, he carries his gear all the time.

technically in ASCII it was possible to engrave words by using creatures as letters. So you could create a series of custom engravings of a cat, an otter, and a walrus, to spell "coW" or whatever you wanted. I never really used this but it was always in the back of my mind that someone could, like, write shakespeare or whatever in engravings if they really wanted.

I'm not sure, I dont think you can rename fortresses. most everything else you can. we could name the first squad something grandiose and chicken-related

Galtran is generally annoying and ignorant, but looks the part of the noble warrior, and so manages to insert himself into situations he is completely unprepared for.

Sir Galtran III listens to Burt's tale, chiming in at the end with a snarky aside to the castle's commander, "If I had been there, no one would have died..."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Galtran continues. "Commander, I request you install me as a member of this adventuring party. Seeing as they are wont to take on dangerous and legendary foes, I would be well suited to assist them. I have a lot of experience in the area, trust me!"

Internally, Galtran recalls the many days spent hitting trees with sticks, and how little it actually taught him about fighting. These introspections would never stop Galtran's quest for fame and fortune, of course, but the insecurity of his status as imposter knight would always plague his conscience.

As well, Galtran sizes up the returning party.. what do they look like, who appears the most important of the group?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Word Map view too small

another lost feature. you will have to wait for an update. this lack makes it difficult to export a true scale world map for sharing with others.

Cutting down logs in the walls of the tavern caused a cave-in, leading to the unfortunate demise of Woodworker Olon Ekastkubuk.

15th slate year 9, the Forgotten Beast Necate arrives.   A being composed of flame, the first cavern layer is set alight.  It engages in a great battle with Zekrim, who has killed two other forgotten beasts who entered his territory.  This battle proves to be a stalemate, as the nickel giant cannot hurt that which is incorporeal, and the flames do little against Zekrim’s metal body.

in my head, I imagined a late-80's anime interpretation of this fight and it was pretty epic. in this version the fire would melt the nickel and the two creatures would merge in a sort of horrible alchemy, spawning an even greater threat in the process.

a grand update. thanks for the writeup. im looking at the size of the tavern and our popcap of 50 and thinking I might have overbuilt it... perhaps a different use can be found? maybe sticking all the temples in that large room and building a more compact tavern space would be good for socialization efforts.

perhaps a mistake (or multiple, compounding mistakes) was made, but we will profit for it, in entertainment!

The Abbey of Full Stomachs, more like, what with all this cheese and charcuterie about. nicely done. and I've always like the look of open-air quarries so I look forward to further updates on the pit.
