DF Bug Reports / [39e] Adventure Sleep/Fall bug
« on: August 08, 2008, 05:45:26 pm »
This ones tough to explain. I was walking around a town with my new adventurer when i had the inkling to jump off the roof of the kings' building. I walked up there, then jumped off. I fell 2 z-levels onto a tree. I was stunned for a while, but the I came to my senses and stood up. At the bottom of the screen, my status was listed as "Flying". I could lie back down, and get up, but I couldn't alt-move off the tree. I decided I should try to sleep (No logic there), but started sleeping before I realized the humongous wait.

I just retired the adventurer while she was sleeping. I wanted to play with her though, so I started again with her. She started in the mead hall, but I couldn't move, and it looked as if the game was running without me (Farmers were running around me, moving around). I waited for about 5 minutes, then I could move again.

It seems as if it saved my sleeping when I retired, so I was technically sleeping still when I started playing again. No clue about the flying thing, though.

This actually is 2 bugs, so I wonder if i should have made a separate topic. . .

edit -[Does no one really have an idea about this one?]

Nice start. Hopefully no one gets killed in the first year.

Intimidator - 4
Conversationalist - 1
Pursuader - 3
Butcher - 2

I think my guy's back story would be along the lines of an adventurous professional torturer.

Essentially useless.  ;D

Why not just set the population hard cap to 7? That should make, for example, only 1 migrant will come if there's 6 Dwarfs, right?

Sadly, no. The game throws at you a whole migration of dwarfs, not just one. The pop cap is a cut off point for migrations, not dwarfs.

Also, could someone reiterate how this game will play out?

So, do you mean we'd kill off all the extra immigrants?
If so, sounds interesting, but the whole when-your-dwarf-dies-you-die thing sounds sketchy. If people take no more than a day for their turns, and don't kill off all the dwarfs, it could work out.
Are you accepting applications now or are you waiting for more support?

Was the elven civilization that the humans conquered at war with the dwarfs before the conqueration?
The guy might have been taken prisoner and converted to elfdom beforehand, then kept his hatred of dwarfs all those years.

That's just me guessing, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: finding the magma pipe
« on: July 26, 2008, 07:46:29 pm »
If you want to find it through cheating (still not sure if this threads point was realistic strategies or just finding it) make sure you have a trade depot built, press "shift-->D"  (capital D, the button you use to path the caravan to your depot).

Change your view down a few z-levels, making sure you haven't breached the z-level your viewing, the look around the level a bit. There is a magma pipe if there is a large area of red "x's" in a random place in the undiscovered rock.

The red "x's" usually denote a general area of the magma, so you shouldn't plan on the magma pipe being exactly where the x's are, but at least on the inside of the x-covered area.

Probably a confusing explanation, but it works efficiently and effectively.

He doesn't only do negative reviews.  Listen to his portal review.

But that's portal. And just about his only completely positive review. He has some half-good half-bad reviews, but as far as I can remember all his reviews are negative.

Yea. That just blasted my mind.

I agree with you that it's essentially impossible for dwarf fortress. He would have to remake the entire game.

But, maybe in Slaves to Armok : God of Blood III - Carp Dungeon.

(I really have no clue as to the plans of Toady, and woul dbe completely fine with him just working on dwarf fortress forever, but. . . )

A hexagonal grid system would open many possibilities to dwarf fortress, all of them (in my opinion) positive. Once you relearn the map, the game would open the way for interesting formations, different massive structures, and such.

Looking around, I've also noticed this mentioned in a few other threads, so I seem to be right of mind. :P

Generated a small world with standard parameters, started a fortress, designate some channels. Notice my miner isn't mining, but hauling food, I go to turn off the food hauling job, but in the v-p-l screen the hauling jobs are all gone. The jobs you can turn on/off skip from [small animal dissection] to [architecture], with nothing in between, no space even.

Maybe I'm just daft? Anyone else have something similar? Have a save ready, if you need it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The weight of years.
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:59:38 pm »
A few months back, a fellow did an experiment to test the idea of old-age death. From what I remember, he created a relatively self-sufficient fortress, then left the game on for a couple days. His results were that the dwarves did die (The fortress had about 50 years of life by that time). I don't remember the specifics from the test, so I can't tell you the death-message or stuff like that.

Just lock this thread. Everything that should have been said has been said, and there;s not much point to bickering any further.

Problem solved, thread done.
