DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Steam: Labor
« on: December 23, 2022, 10:44:22 am »
I think this labor update would have splashed better if Tarn warned us that design would be removing player control, intentionally. certain blog updates suggested this was coming but there was no explanation provided for this change of systems, which put a bad taste in many player's mouths

This is simply false. This post from August 2021 fully explained the labor system and all of the loss of control therein. Nothing was hidden here. I don't think they should be blamed for something they didn't do.

It was very, very clunky, to the point that many people preferred working with a gigantic spreadsheet, but the ability to set custom labors is powerful as well, so it's important to recapture while trying to avoid making the system too laborious.

yeah, fair, I honestly just forgot about that post. but i guess this is the part of this I would like to highlight. "important to recapture" yes. %100. %1000. I sort of trusted the process and it didn't work out as I had expected... the game is slow to interact with now, and that's way worse of a barrier for um certain people who hate slogging around a mouse cursor. keyboard cursor has issues with designating constructions.

surprised player controlled auto-selection of material failed to make it in? hopefully a stretch feature, it's a no-brainer

so I dunno, I would appreciate it if the discussion were to continue without trying to shut people down by calling them liars?

if you have an issue with my tone, well, just take a quick look at the steam threads for an example of how much less polite people can be.

the newly released classic version has many of the same issues mentioned previously in the thread (if not more) but hopefully those get smoothed out as the year ends. smoothing designations not appearing, no zoom feature, garbled text - and I'm surprised at how much of a throwback it is with non-square ACSCII. even the world map loses detail akin to the 2d version. nice new default color schema, however.

community to the rescue...

golden turtles?? why, yes, I would like to risk my life to secure that otherwise unremarkable crown!

so 50 years passed between the wars. I wonder what sparked the second wave of violence

648
... not sure it would transfer? fairly sure premium update breaks old saves

649
ahaha I do love me some feersum endjinn writing... very nice update. goblins are always working up some reason or another to skeeve about.

so once the save is up, looks like daeizer?

650
seems like an oversight, can confirm no large gems made in my fortresses

651
The Mark left

Upon us The Staff of Hide. Once a bustling dwarven community rendered into a mere bandit camp, ran by a repugnant goblin baron Gozru Terrorcalled who uses a weak puppet warlord Ubbul and his two thugs Zas and Asob the wrestlers to keep the rest of us dwarves in check.

this foul puppetry shall be vanquished! . . . but who will volunteer for the quest? the heroes of yore are old, invalid, or dead. Will a new face appear, from the shadowy wastes?

and essentially end at "basically DF Therapist, but not quite as good".

yeah... am I the only one who used the DFhack labor management menu. . ? in-game accessibility paired with fast controls, ability to copy-paste labor selection, extra sorting options for large fortresses, and easy visual confirmation of an individual's skills and enabled labors.

after thorough playing of the new version, it has become clear that only a few of these features are partially replicated with the new menu. the rest are absent.

DF Suggestions / Re: Terrible Suggestions Thread

Some megabeasts are highly allergic to bees and if they are stung by one at a fort they may very well suffocate. This should happen during world generation too.
Or bloat many times and start crushing not only buildings but walls stone and even spacetime itself
Anytime bloated forgotten beast is attacked it has a high chance to explode and kill all creatures nearby.

re-make dwarf fortress but now it's akin to a certain co-op horde shooter FPS from 2008

Echidnas seem to be the ultimate distraction, ether for the good of the fort or its downfall.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

i am imagining that scene from star wars the phantom menace with the roller droids vs. Obi Wan, except its 12 fleshy spiked balls thundering down into the steaming slade and hundreds of demons letting out a collective, "nope."

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Questions about Nobles (Steam Version 50.03)
« on: December 21, 2022, 01:32:54 pm »
Great, thank you. What are some things you look for in a Baron or even a noble in general?

Most ideal is a noble without a preference for an item type. They never issue mandates at all.

damn that's a great trick.

So tasteless stoic was their leader, that he never thought to make demands

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The Value-Rounding from Appraisal is disastrous
« on: December 21, 2022, 01:31:09 pm »
basic cut gems of varying quality have never existed (iirc), but large gems can have quality values.

I too have noticed that gems used to be worth ~250 dwarfbucks are now estimated at ~1000 . . .

disastrous? doubtful. trading has never been balanced lol

Utterly immersion-breaking. Merchants take whatever price you label your crap at, as if you're the wisest man in the galaxy despite not doing math good.

I feel like I've wasted my time spent trying to figure out item value.

again, the immersion has always been broken, because well who tf would pay $10,000 for a 'lavish meal' consisting of a goat bladder and two shucked oysters boiled in a soup of dwarven piss-wine??

make sure your dwarves have no other tasks.... my 2 cents. have not encountered this issue

afaik aquifers do not drip from ceiling tiles, since the tiles that produce the liquid are blocked by the intervening floor tile.

perhaps you missed a spot for smoothing, or even a whole section of aquifer. this new version upped the aquifer frequency and now there are multiple layers on most embarks.

post images if you can!

two posts in and the koala is joining the local mafia (no doubt associated with the larger iron mining conglomerates that are currently destroying the great barrier reef thanks to decades of lax regulatory oversight at the hands the the liberal government).

and they say money doesn't grow on trees. . .
