Man that book had the most hilariously shallow political discourse.  And the whole conflict was driven by an economic crises that elementary accounting identities should tell anyone was nonsensical.
The books are well-written and enjoyable, I myself am a fan, but David Weber grossly oversimplifies politics and frequently uses exagerrated caricatures - one of which is the Manticoran liberal party.

Anyway, welcome back!

Thats exactly my point. I always chuckle when Weber goes hard on politics (i love lasers pewpew), but what is happening here is so grotesque and look exactly like in books. I am myself liberal but reading this topic makes me cringe and oftentimes I go tantrum when I see many generalisations and blatant lies and outright insults of my people and our leaders and all other things. If I dislike most of putin politics I don't call him hitler or insane or something like that. I don't generalize and perceive russians as it was made many times here. There is no black and white, it's alot more complicated.
If this forum is mostly liberal, why it's so unipolar? I realize there many non-liberals, but why majority is so hostile and unipolar? Making statements like all media in Russia is propaganda? It's false statement. And it's just one example. Why UR can go gung ho and thats absolutely normal thing? Why isnulting Russia is okay and opposite action is a straight ban?

Amount of hipocricy in this thread is staggering. If you not kissing asses - you are wrongdoer. You and your people can be belittled if you on wrong side of spectrum. People never being in modern Russia have magical full x-ray vision and understanding of every interim problem. They know economy and well being of local populace like it's their own neighborhood. They know every single bit about spetznaz and operate GDP/budget values like you even can compare this things number to number.

Actually, sorry, I was sure I've explained it, and it seems I didn't; Peter I is considered to be a great ruler in Russia, but when you actually take a look at what he did, it turns out that it wasn't all that great, and he was mostly randomly taking ideas from Western Europe. The trick is, some of the better ideas got kept around later, while most of the stupid ones were dropped, and after a while, the bad ones were forgotten, and the nickname 'Great' stuck around (as far as I can tell, almost every Russian ruler was called 'Great' when he/she was in power). That's from reading Suvorov, who is currently running a series in Polish historical magazine about rulers in Russian history who are remembered much better than they deserve (there are a lot of those; past seems to be even easier to manipulate than the present for Russian propaganda).
So, in short, Peter I was not so Great (I mean, he was quite big, but... oh darn, you know what I mean), but not only God knows why is known in Russia as that. The trick here is to try and read about what various 'Great' rulers actually did, and it turns out that quite a lot of them were, in fact, rather Puny; it's not limited to Russia by no means.

He was called great because he westernized Russia (my EU bits tickled and orgasmed) and he basically destroyed medieval-age boyars influence which is first/second best thing ever done on par with Napoleon revolution. And he brought alot of western intellect in Russia. Not calling him a great is idiocy in my mind.

These two sources (and there alot more) that are totally unbiased and represent every end of spectrum. On "Echo" you can find videos of Remchukov and Kiselev next to each other.

Well, that's not strictly true. Most dachas around here have a "backyard", and even a "basement" - except the "backyard" is actually the main yard slash vegetable garden, and the "basement" is more often than not mostly a cellar.
Almost none of the basements in Russia are used as residential areas, and backyards are most often communal. It all boils down to us not really having a proper suburbia.

Well, they understand and in the same time they summon old stupid argument about basement? You contradict yourself. In reality when they talk about basement they talk about very different thing than we are.
