ravensword227 cancels sleep: strange mood
ravensword227 has entered a fey mood...
ravensword227 has claimed a computer!
ravensword227: "I must have dwarves!"

We could find out which dwarves he wants, or we can lock him in the workshop    :D

Masons and stonecrafters tend to have easy moods. If you want a lot of moods to be uneventful, split mundane masonry work among all your dwarves with one profiled shop for the good mason.

CABIN FEVER: You are stranded with a friend when a cave in occurs. After you go to sleep, he kills and eats you.

THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY: You are captured by kobolds. Upon waking, you find yourself in a cage with other prisoners and begin to plot your escape.

BEER GOGGLES: After a night of partying, you wake up next to a woman that is five feet tall and has no beard.

BELOVED HERO: The dragon has been vanquished. A celebration is thrown in your honor. A woman invites you to spend the night. The next day you are driven out by a mob with her husband in the lead.

Well shucks. Seems there are more of us. Well, then I'm the only one from here, which is like Russia version 0.1
In case anyone wants to work against that one, too, then I'm the only one from there that is a texan and a math major.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, so I'm the only one that was born in russia.

Have you been able to get screw pumps to connect to machines below them? I don't think they are quite as good as gear assemblies

The "front" is impassable to dwarves

Exponential? Sure, it's many. But the growth is O(n^2), i think.
I suppose you could do it over multiple levels for a 3-level aquifer if you're masochistic. The 1-level ones satisfy all my water needs - they seem to be the most common, too.

You can also use the same method to expand the walls on a single level gradually, moving the pumps as you go.

I have an idea. Hmm. It seems like most of what I'm going in this version so far is experimenting with the pumps  :D

And a nice cold winter?
Nope. Can even penetrate salt water like this. Just uses a lot of wood.

Merlon - ah. mine wasnt a way to try t get past an aquifer, but rather to bring water up from it :P
I did recently find a way to get past an aquifer, though, that only takes wood  :D

JT - The stairs do get runoff water, but its a nonissue since its just connected to the surface
Merlon - The bottom pump was build one level above the aquifer level and a channel was dug by its intake.

Edit - JT, You could make a similar degisn without any runoff, but its not as compact and uses more machine power.

This is untested:

code:

######
#_-=~#
##|###
##*o##
##XX##

######
#~=-_#
###|##
##o*##
##XX##

None of these designs will work because water can flow diagonally. It would leak into the staircases or gear assemblies.

The first one I posted isnt an "it would be nice if..." design. It's a design I have already used and it works beautifully.

sukasa - i think it will make more since to you why it doesnt work if you try to build it.

z-view
code:
#_-=~#

#~=-_#
#_-=~#
#~=-_#
#_-=~#
#~=-_#
#_-=~#
#~=-_#
#_-=~#
#~=-_#

Key:
-= screw pump (west to east)
=- screw pump (east to west)
_ channel
~ water
# wall

cutoff view

code:

######
#_-=~#
##X*##
######

######
#~=-_#
##X*##
######

X staircase
-= screw pump (west to east)
=- screw pump (east to west)
* gear assembly
_ channel
~ water
# wall

This is what im using to pump water from an aquifer. Easily adaptable to most stuff you may want to pump
