General Discussion / Colossal bronze age battle site unearthed!
« on: March 25, 2016, 06:19:54 pm »
“This is not a bunch of local idiots,” says University of Mainz geneticist Joachim Burger. “It’s a highly diverse population.”

As University of Aarhus’s Vandkilde puts it: “It’s an army like the one described in Homeric epics, made up of smaller war bands that gathered to sack Troy”—an event thought to have happened fewer than 100 years later, in 1184 B.C.E. That suggests an unexpectedly widespread social organization, Jantzen says. “To organize a battle like this over tremendous distances and gather all these people in one place was a tremendous accomplishment,” he says.

So far the team has published only a handful of peer-reviewed papers. With excavations stopped, pending more funding, they’re writing up publications now. But archaeologists familiar with the project say the implications are dramatic. Tollense could force a re-evaluation of the whole period in the area from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, says archaeologist Kristian Kristiansen  of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. “It opens the door to a lot of new evidence for the way Bronze Age societies were organized,” he says.

For example, strong evidence suggests this wasn’t the first battle for these men. Twenty-seven percent of the skeletons show signs of healed traumas from earlier fights, including three skulls with healed fractures. “It’s hard to tell the reason for the injuries, but these don’t look like your typical young farmers,” Jantzen says.

I know what you're all thinking, when will Paradox make Prehistory Kings. But in all seriousness this is amazing stuff, I wonder how long humans have been civilized and just how much is lost due to the erosion of time

General Discussion / European Union thread
« on: October 02, 2015, 05:13:39 pm »
Welcome to this thread for the great European Project, no relation to any other threads whatsoever. Some say it has brought unity, others division. Some say it will be the United States of Europe, others say it is not even European. Some say it is undemocratic, others say it is the most ambitious humanist empire in history. Whilst some fight to leave it, others fight to join it. Whatever it is, everyone loves talking about it.

Rules for the thread:
  • No Catalonia
  • No Malvinas
  • No accusing other forumites of ruining your country, even if true
  • No accusing other forumites of runing their own country, even if true
  • No ruining other forumites country intentionally

But in all seriousness:
  • No insults on other people ITT please. Same goes with passive aggressiveness.
  • If you must shitpost, end every shitpost with "I am a shitposter disregard my opinions."
  • Do not spam the thread. Spamming the thread with shitposts is twice as bad, and in an emergency will result in temporary Merkel Martial Law.
  • Leave your steel beams by the door.
  • Be calm and chill, remember to post citations to your assertions.

General Discussion / Pick your future overlord
« on: June 28, 2015, 02:56:25 pm »
Pros of human rule:
  • Humans aren't doing a bad job
  • Hasn't gone wrong yet
  • Humans understand humans
  • Humans can work with other humans

Cons:
  • Humans aren't doing a good job
  • Kinda boring
  • Could probably go wrong
  • Prone to political dickery or general idiocy

Pros of brainjar rule:
  • Brainjar administrator can build up expertise and experience
  • Brainjar understands humans, it is one, can fit into existing governmental systems
  • It does not have a body to satisfy, only exists to administrate
  • Can be shut down, it never has power outside the jar's functions and its speech

Cons of brainjar rule:
  • Potential to create personality cult based around the brainjar
  • Brainjar understands humans, but could become detached from human condition/go insane without anyone noticing
  • Smart brains focused on ruling may not necessarily mean good rule
  • Brainjar could be reserved from human suffering as it does not experience human suffering anymore

AI rule:
Pros:
  • Smarter than you
  • Fixes everything
  • Has the impartiality of robits
  • Can be programmed to pursue outcomes in line with humans

Cons:
  • May self-replicate or design new AIs which eventually supercede humans, or may itself supercede humans
  • May fix everything in ways which humans don't want, like, or be able to survive through
  • May not understand the human condition or even think anything alike biological cognitive functions.
  • May cause the end of the world, as narrated by robot Morgan Freeman.

Technological singularity:
Pros:
  • Praise the omnissiah
  • Humans can improve their own cognitive functions with implants
  • Humans and AI go hand in hand to the future as one
  • Would be a pretty good safeguard against AI extermination attempts against humanity, as both are codependent

Cons:
  • Liable to destruction by purity space slavs and fundamentalist +25% zealots
  • Humankind as we know it will most likely disappear, something about us could be lost
  • Higher cognitive political dickery takes place at the speed of light
  • Superior machine-human hybrids will supercede lesser ones, literal PC master race will begin Gaben's crusade against the lesser machine-human hybrids

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Cog the blind Drunk
« on: April 05, 2015, 12:56:49 pm »
This is Sarvesh Ochreknight.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is not her story.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is Cog the Drunk's story.

In the year of 1065, Cog the Drunk got into a brawl with the adventuring swordswarf Sarvesh Ochreknight. Even when blinded, Cog refused to surrender. It was then I decided to load up DFusion and play forever as Cog, the Drunk.
His skills are mediocre, his attributes are a mixed bag and he has no companions, money, food, water, alcohol, status, weapons or armour.
He also no longer has a pair of working eyes, what with his ocular introduction to a copper sword and all.

I believe in Cog.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Cog's ears, nose and hands are still very much functional. These sense weren't even given to blind adventurers of older DFs. Cog can make a name for himself in this world.

Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: World (click to show/hide)
The world is 1065 years old, a huge world with all the history that goes along with that timescale. I plan to get a souvenir from every single civilization in the world, which should make for some interesting encounters. Currently starting in the bottom right Dwarven civilization (marked by the little square), going the only way currently possible - north. That way civilization lies, and bandits and bogeymen are unlikely to prey on poor Cog. Besides this one use of dfusion (a necessary evil), the whole thing will be vanilla all the way. This blind playthrough is blind, in both senses of the word. I have yet to delve into DF2014, and all of its surprises shall truly be surprises. With all that said... Cog walks to the mountainhome.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Beyond quality: Monoscii
« on: March 29, 2015, 05:53:38 pm »

In the argument between vanilla tileset users and sprite tileset users (pointless since we know vanilla users are almost right and tileset users certainly wrong), vanilla often trumps with some very good arguments. No time need be spent making sprites for an infinite myriad of beasties, imagination paints greater pictures than pixels ever will. Information of an immense scale is condensed, yet not impenetrable - it's like looking into the matrix and somehow being able to distinguish at will what is a bridge, what is a walled off level and what is a cat falling on a goblin at terminal velocity. And naturally, vanilla is sweet, sweet vanilla.

So perhaps it is best that we distill the vanilla tileset to create the abomination that is this, to maximize DF immersion and player enjoyment. Toady pls implement streamline grafix.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With Monoscii I can watch the opening cutscene at blistering gorillion*1080p. Look at that beauty.

But enough with the next-gen graphics of Monoscii, more on streamlining UI. I believe Monoscii will make this game more accessible to newbies because the UI will be so streamlined it's practically 2D ez to navigate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The UI literally being 2D lines certainly helps. Here I am navigating the menu to create a new world, before it would take me days just to find the right submenu!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Worldgen is immaculately simple too. I didn't have to worry about rejections or finding the perfect world, I merely rolled my face over my keyboard and hit [esc] when all the lights stopped blinking. If it wasn't a perfect world, tough luck, DF is hardcore (inability to distinguish between biomes removes frustration at dodgy worlds).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And just look at that! If you ask me, that's the best representation of a forest and river I've ever bloody seen in a video game, fuck you EA. You can easily make out the wagon, the 7 Dwarves and the tree trunks scattered across the grassy plains. Fucking gorgeous.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dwarves cutting down trees and gathering plants - look at the terrible damage they have wreaked on the local ecology, elves avert your eyes. It's necessary if they are to build shelter and gather supplies before winter strikes. Monoscii easily allows me to plan ahead with my deforestation industry, I swear Monoscii has practically allowed me to develop Pollarding and Coppicing for my Dwarves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All is not hunky dory in Dorf land, I had accidentally embarked on a spooky lair inhabited by a spooky woman of the night.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I feel it's cheap to lock an inhabitant in their own home, but if it's in Monoscii then it's permissable. All's fair in love and mono.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And of course Monoscii is perfect for all those who love absolute symmetry, no longer will you have to fear for stray arrowbolts or corpses ruining your planned obelisk of OCD compulsion - here are the digging plans for my farms. What they will grow, only Monoscii will know.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And of course, the stockpiles through which my lazy idlers are piling up booze and socializing instead of working. I'd throw them in the river if the Monoscii would not end my game in retribution.

Really, you shouldn't ask yourself why you should throw away vanilla or sprite tilesets. You should ask yourself why not. Monoscii is clearly the only tileset that isn't for filthy casuals. Once you go Monoscii you can never be free... Of the ignorance of a world without Monoscii.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ravens are murder. [SPOILERS]
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:18:57 pm »
Wait, wait, wait. Why the hell do you have a raven stockpile?
THEY QUESTIONED ME

AND NOW IT IS OVER

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My greatest foe, my carrion swarm who have tormented my skies and my Dwarves since time immemorial have devoured the demon legions which sought to use a pierced adamantine vein as their ticket to the surface. That's right, the undead ravens killed the entirety of the hidden fun stuff. Having not sated their infinite bloodlust however, they have begun to spill through the tube and have swarmed into hell and are ripping the denizens of the underworld alive.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
NOW THE DEMONS OF THE UNDERWORLD SHALL SHARE IN MY HELL! NOTHING IS WORSE THAN A RAVEN CORPSE! NOTHING!

As an aside, it's possible that I may have driven the raven corpse population to destruction. Should this be true I can always process my domesticated eagles into eagle corpse swarms and continue to plague the underworld with horrible swarms. It won't be the same, but it will be a functional substitute. When caught between the option of colonizing hell or flooding its infinite legion with the dread wrath of the raven I shall stick with the option that is most insulting to demonkind.

On this Christmas Eve be sure to give thanks to the raven flock nearest to you, thanks for it allowing you to live.

Play With Your Buddies / Let's play SM Alpha Centauri - The Dark Decades
« on: August 29, 2014, 07:47:44 am »
The year was 2014 when things on planet Earth went somewhat to shits. Every government and corporation unanimously decided that the world's problems were probably too hard to solve, so they did the next best thing and took humanity out of the problem by sending humankind into space towards a possible harbour of new life; Alpha Centauri.
With some deriding this decision as being a lazy way out unlikely to succeed, the assembled world leaders all assured their constituents that the utmost care and diligence would be put into ensuring that the UNITY project had a full diverse crew with every ethnicity represented and the world clapped in glorious applause as an international premier of "Ow my Balls: The talent show" began to air for the first time. There was also mention of Morgansoft and Joogle pooling in the last of their capital and assets into crafting a perfect ship that would get everyone to Alpha Centauri safely, but this was all mostly forgotten amidst a sea of optimism and covert hashtag wars.

The UNITY mission was destined for success with all the right specialists working together under Captain Garland to forge a new future, bright and peaceful; dauntless and inventive! An inspired humanity leaving behind the ills of the old world, ready to take on the new.

That is until Captain Garland was assassinated by an unknown assailant and everyone began carving up their own neat little enclaves of colony pods with their own selves at the helm - the new leaders of 7 factions each striving to put their idea of the future above all other visions.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the map of the world.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
These are the regions each faction started in.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The challenge here is that as you can see: Atlantis is entirely covered in monsoon jungles, rich in nutrients, freshwater and who knows what else. Farms in Atlantis will produce more food than anywhere else on Pangea; this is important because it means that the residents of Atlantis will have plenty of foods and so they will get busy having sex and having children - burgeoning their populations beyond competition. The Free Drones and the University of Planet are also both permanent pact brothers, (I tried to get both factions to surrender to one another to make them always share tech but I can't seem to get that to work properly for some reason) meaning they both more or less offset their respective weaknesses. The island of Atlantis itself is a defensive paragon of geography; it is distant from the struggles of Pangea allowing the University to pile ahead in research without probes stealing their work or interrupting his vital work. The factions on Pangea have no existing diplomatic ties and are much more likely to war amongst themselves than against the Atlantean island. It'll also start using the past tense as I've already got a century of gaming done just to make sure this game wouldn't end in premature destruction and kill the story before it's begun; sure enough the game's gotten interesting enough to warrant write ups and forum suggestions.
Oh, and I also gave the Free Drones and University 2x the starting units as any of the other factions, meaning Domai and Zhakarov both started with 4 colony pods and 2 scout units. This is just to further accelerate the head start the Atlanteans would have on the rest of the Pangean world.
There are two advantages the Believers have and one little commiseration eveyone has which is all right, namely that the Pangean heartland holds the Uranium flats which provide a modest bonus to energy reserves (it's not much, but it's something), I know the general map layout and Pangea is much larger than Atlantis - bigger has its benefits. Open to suggestions and ideas as well as names for new bases.

General Discussion / Armchair General General - /AGG
« on: August 04, 2014, 06:04:15 pm »
So the Europol thread as it does is debating about who would win in a war, the EU or the USA. This got me thinking.

Who would actually win? So I started tallying up some numbers.

A comparison of the top 10 military powers of Europe vs the USA.

Spoiler: Infantry! (click to show/hide)
Sum total top 10:
AFP: 1,543,706
ARP: 2,034,170 (Poland and Ukraine putting in work providing 3/4 of all reserve personnel)

VS USA
AFP: 1,430,000
ARP: 850,880

It's assumed that Switzerland abandons its eternal policy of neutrality for some reason and that all of Europe has united with fanatical zeal to stop America and has dramatically reorganized all of its armed forces under one language, one command system and one military. It also assumes that Russia is playing along nicely even with Ukraine because Putin is pleased by these anti-American turn of events. Population wise, Europe can afford many more civilian casualties than America in a non-nuclear war with a much larger population, twice that of America's. These statistics also do not factor in the estimated 288,000,000 armed American civilians, so they're both roughly evenly matched for as long as Europe doesn't invade America.

Sum total top 10:
Tanks: 7,751
AFVs: 42,144
Artillery: 5,134
MLRSs: 1,456

VS USA:
Tanks: 8,325
AFVs: 25,782
Artillery: 3,725
MLRSs: 1,330

The European armies sport some really advanced tanks from the British Challenger 2 to the German Leopard 2A5 and some tanks dating all the way back to the cold war like the T-54s and T-55s used by former Soviet states, it's an evenly mixed bag with the American M1 Abrams outclassing and being outclassed pretty evenly. The deciding factor here is the abundance of European AFVs, the ability to move troops around is invaluable for just about any reason you want, mobility is a tenet of war. Point goes to Europeans.

Spoiler: Air power! (click to show/hide)
Sum total top 10:
Fighters: 1,138
Attack craft: 1,085
Logistics aircraft: 2,251
Helicopters: 2,672
Serviceable airports: 2,275

VS USA:
Fighters: 2,271
Attack craft: 2,601
Logistics aircraft: 5,222
Helicopters: 6,926
Serviceable airports: 13,513

It doesn't matter if the Typhoon is faster and more cost efficient than the F-35 as the numbers speak for themselves. Clear American victory here. Point to America for overwhelming aerial superiority.

Spoiler: NAVAL WARFARE! (click to show/hide)
Sum total top 10:
Aircraft carriers: 5
Frigates: 80
Destroyers: 10
Submarines: 44
Corvettes: 23
CDC: 92
MWS: 278
MMS: 3022
Major ports: 76

VS USA:
Aircraft carriers: 10
Frigates: 15
Destroyers: 62
Corvettes: 0
Submarines: 72
CDC: 13
MWS: 13
MMS: 393
Major ports: 24

Greater quantities of carriers, destroyers and submarines means that the US navy is more than capable of threatening Europe's vast merchant navy across the world. Point to the USA for naval superiority.

Spoiler: Shekel war (click to show/hide)
Sum total top 10:
GDP: $14,075 B
Defence budget: $219 B
External Debt: $30,529 B
Reserves of Forex & Gold: $1,535 B (Swizterland's swimming in Forex and Gold with 1/3 of team Europe's Forex/Gold reserves)
PPP: $13,390 B

VS USA
GDP: $15,680 B
Defence Budget: $612B
External Debt: $15,930 B
Reserves of Forex & Gold: $150B
PPP: $15,940 B

The external debt for Europe is misleading, since it belongs more to individual countries more than others and so would affect countries like France, Germany and Britain more than say, Switzerland. Keeping in mind this is the top 10 military powers of Europe and not the top 10 Economic powers of Europe, clear winner is Europe because of the vast amounts of resources they can employ in shekel war. Point to Europe for their financial powerhouses from London to Zurich to Frankfurt.

Spoiler: Nukes and Seuss (click to show/hide)
Sum total:
450-555 warheads in addition to 600 American warheads

VS USA
4,513 (after deducting 600 warheads).

Point to USA.

Points all over the place to USA. The EU is such an awkward state trying to work with Nation states who all have their own agendas and really only Germany likes it right now, what with euroskepticism being at its highest. Pride in being European is nonexistent, nationalistic pride in individual sovereign states is sparsely dotted around the Eastern European nations, Britain, France and wherever a far-right group has wriggled their way into a European state that's suffering through a poor Eurozone. It would take something absolutely amazing to get all the European states to unanimously declare total war against the USA and mobilize all their manpower, finances and military to meet the Americans in combat and would also be in direct contradiction with the traditions of many states like Switzerland's neutrality or Britain's special relationship with the USA. An invasion of the US is impossible since the US has absolute naval superiority and its heavily armed civilian populace. The Americans clap a lot and love their flags, their nationalistic pride is Germany after the world cup all day every day. The quality of their armed forces takes back seat to the sheer volume of equipment and materiel they can field against their European counterparts in a total war, and their quality isn't even that bad. They have veterans from several wars that only France and Britain can claim to match, their navy is unmatched, their air force is unmatched, their special forces are pretty damn good (though that's an area in which the Europeans definitely win) and they have so much oil of their own whereas Europe is heavily dependent on imports. That said, I also do not see how America WOULD go about defeating the EU. Being vastly superior is one thing, but actually winning is another. I think I'll make a forum game out of that, but until then, Armchair General General! - /AGG

Question for the day, how and where would the USA land on Europe?

BAY12'S POSTMODERN UNITED FACTIONS; HISTORIES OF SID MEIER'S ALPHA CENTAURI/ALIEN CROSSFIRE

Alpha Centauri (and its expansion Alien Crossfire) is a 4x game, meaning you guide your faction to explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. And this is my pilot game to see if you can run a forum game through an actual game. We have a good game, a good forum full of good players - my hopes are high.
As the title suggests, this is going to be more a game of diplomacy than a quick struggle for supremacy - this is a contest to see which forumite is the most capable of leading their people to victory in a futuristic world full of strange technologies.

The rules to this forum game are quite simple to streamline rounds and make everything go quickly.

  • Base production (the units and base facilities you build) will be sorted out by the AI, though you may control the production of your capital city (the base with your HQ in it) and also decide what you want the AI base governer to emphasize in production.
  • All units will be automated, with an exception being that 10 units a turn can be given commands as simple as "attack nearest enemy base" or as advanced as "move through the mountains and occupy that road at this square." Probe teams and colony pods can all be given as many orders as there are probe teams and colony pods without counting to the 10 units a turn limit, and will not be automated without the wish of the owning player.
  • Research will be random and automated, steal and trade from others if you urgently need their tech.
  • You will be in control of your unit designs, and will be alerted when new modules present themselves.
  • You start the game with 1 capital city and 10 extra colony pods. Guard them carefully, as they are the only means to construct new bases and you will not be able to build new ones. Razing bases also carry more weight - once they are gone they are gone forever.
  • Declare where your 0 to 10 units are moving, new unit designs, social engineering, pacts and their like in the thread or through PMs to me if you want to be sneaky. Both are acceptable.
  • Secret projects are disabled because there are a few that can make one faction overpowered.
  • I'll post images and writeups of everything that has happened in a round unless it is a secret action posted via PM, in which case it will only be posted in the forums if it is discovered by a faction in game (i.e. a probe team is discovered or a hover tank that was secretly ordered to move towards an enemy base is now assaulting that base's defences).

To get started:
1] Pick a faction.
2] Pick a starting location on the map above by marking it with an x, your first base will be constructed as close as possible to the x.
3] You will be given additional decisions to make as they arise.
4] Begin diplomacy with the others. Threaten, blackmail, ally, trade and subjugate - if it is in line with your agenda, pursue it.

The game will start when there's 7 players, if a player cannot take their turn for whatever reason then their move will be open for the AI to take or a volunteer could take over. I won't be playing, as for obvious reasons I would have an unfair advantage by seeing everything if I competed. As a minor disclaimer, no knowledge of Alpha Centauri is needed as your decisions will be detailed to you, but it does help! For RP reasons, everything is in the future and in space. Humanity has sent a colonization team to Alpha Centauri due to Earth becoming increasingly more dangerous to the point where human civilization is threatened. The colonization looked to be going well until mutinies occurred, and the Captain was assassinated. The survivors all split off and banded with the factions they most agreed with, united not by nationality or ethnicity - but by ideology. Each faction will attempt to become dominant through commerce, research, conquest or diplomacy - on an alien world that wants it dead.

Let the diplomacy, begin!

In this day and age, one has to look far and wide to find a corner of the internet that has been untouched by memes. In fact; such a thing is impossible. A meme is simply defined as a recurring thought pattern that finds its way into a culture and propagates itself in said culture through replication and modification, the form most people would know it as comes as the form of an image macro.
An image macro is an image with superimposed text in the header and footer. Often funny, often not.

As much as I'd find it interesting to go into the history of their rising from their demiurges' piss, their rejection from their demiurges after their adoption by the great appropriators and so forth; the question I am asking now is whether the widespread adoption of memes as a primary form of communication is detrimental to dialogue on the internet, and on the world as a whole.

I am of course, in constant moral panic about these things. Panic isn't the right word of course; I fear of these changes as a geriatric man would fear some new trend in hip clothing and of course hope they are as unsounded fears as that. Yet there is something fairly disturbing when people lose their ability to use the internet for more than Pavlovian conditioning; i.e. this message is expressed through this meme, and as such the message carries the same reaction as the meme would carry. Similarly the narrowing of opinions, of the ability to express one's self - is it slipping away with every continued chip at prose?
Will the usage of memes ever have reached a point where it has gone too far, such as the various western governments employing the usage of memes in embarrassing wastes of money in order to try and cash in on the shortening attention spans of their loyal voters?
I remember a time when people were fretting, worrying and panicking about a certain community being killed by the constant overusage of memes. Sure enough, it died.

And for those of whom who cannot understand what I mean, allow me to express the above entirely in memes.

You blew 150k on memes you could have gotten in $1.50 in 4chan gold...
