General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

As for aesthetics, to my understanding it's more... more like those people who don't feel as if their limbs are real, or that their limbs don't belong to them. It's just a wrongness about their body that itches at their mind, always lurking, and until it's fixed, they won't really be happy.

I don't really know about that first comment/question, about what the difference is between trans people who feel the need to go post-op, and those comfortable without it.

Hey, don't look at me to defend this interpretation. I said twice I don't agree with it. But that's what the writer was trying to get at, I think, and that post was in response to Bowtie saying they didn't get it.

For two, the cis person is saying "I've never known any trans people," and the translator is saying he "assumes he can tell when someone is trans," because if he couldn't tell that someone is trans, then he wouldn't say he "never met one," because he would know he could have but not known it. Meaning that he'd be saying that no trans person can pass as their gender.

As I said for this one, I'd chalk it up to poor wording at worst, so it's a bit hard to translate something that I don't agree with. Have to get into their head, yeah? :U

People saying "You're so smart for a black man!" and/or "You're black? But you're so smart!" are also "trying to give a compliment."

Doesn't make it not racist.

Same principle here.

ABC is talking about how Rubio finally got more twitter traffic then Trump.  They didn't mention that it was right after Christie tore Rubio a new asshole.
Trump himself shows that old adage about "any publicity is good publicity" is, at least as a crutch, true. So yeah, even if it's "bad" twitter traffic, it's still traffic.

1. Yeah that one is a dick thing to say.

2. That one is, to me, looking to be offended. It could just as easily be translated as "Nobody has come out as trans to me before," and be just as valid.

3. Dude is basically looking to get a gold star for being a decent human being, so yeah.

4. Same as number one, that's a dick thing to say.

5. Poor wording on the cisgender persons part, could easily have been worded as "I'm glad you trust me enough to tell me," and be just as valid.

6. Creepy as hell.

7. While I agree it can take a bit of getting used to, the answer to that is suck it up and practice until you think of your friend as their gender, not to whine to them about "oh it's so haaaard," for the simple fact that it's 1000x as hard to be trans so it'd be like complaining about a paper cut to someone with their legs crushed beneath heavy machinery. [note i'm not saying you should never complain about something because others have it worse, but... think about who you're complaining to about what, okay? you wouldn't complain to a starving orphan about "oh man I haven't eaten all day!" would you? especially if that's hyperbole and you ate breakfast or something]

8. That one is just literally assuming the person means the opposite of what they say, so yeah let's not.

5/8 I can agree with the article writer, so that's three there that I feel are wrong. And this is after the writer has probably chosen from among a multitude of scenarios and re-worked them to put the cisgender person in a bad light, so it doesn't speak well to how they view people in their day to day life. I probably would not enjoy being around this person.

Exactly. If you are already expecting your life to end up with you being the property of another human being, then being made into a slave is nothing you weren't already expecting, and when this owner of yours treats gives you more freedom than you had at home in ways that are important to you, then it'll be the better of two bad options for you, from your perspective. Hell, without knowing what she knows of the outside world, she may not even know that a life not being controlled is even possible, so it'd be the best option ever from her perspective.

Couple that with stockholm syndrome, and it's no surprise she wants to go back.

I've never gotten far enough to tell, but you can make your own ammo, right?

my only beef with discussions of singularity is when people conflate it with transhumanism in general, or AI researchers who are working on general AI

i'm not the latter but i am the former

and i don't truck with no "just be patient and Machine Jesus will save us all" tripe, gotta work for your paradise son
Frankly, I don't trust others in regards to this sort of technology to not fuck it up and get us all killed. I have... well, no hope in the other researchers, though this could be (and probably is) just my ego talking.

Musk and Yudkowsky's work both have the exact same stated goal. I haven't seen Musk talk much, but I read Yudkowsky's book, so I've got an idea of his ego, and yeah, I can see it being that. I'm reminded of that time he said the entire readership of his fanfiction, which seems to be the most popular fanfiction on fanfiction.net, might be smarter than him. Might. Seriously, here's the exact post I'm referring to. When it comes to ego, you're in good company.
I pay attention to him, and I like some of the stuff he's written, but yeah. He's got an ego.

Communicators, PADDs, and bridge consoles, only without the stick of dynamite every captain randomly puts in consoles to blow up during a fight. (Why do you think captains don't have consoles, only tiny armrest displays?)

God, you're such a cellout.

Even if that blood comes from a really weird semi-metaphorical sacrifice of a supposedly perfect being who is only even dead for a day or two, and arguably suffers less than most humans.
You seem to be overlooking the fact that most churches agree Christ was punished for every sin made by the elect - that is, he suffered God's wrath a few million times over
It's the same thing as the hell argument, though, since it's all relative. In the face of eternity, anything else is small beans, whether you're burning in hell for eternity or ruling in heaven for eternity.
