Not sure about the wrecking the world part.
If df was using parallel computing the world could be made much much bigger. Add to that a vpn system that allows players to group in small number (number decided after thorough testing) and a "living" world evolving even when everyone is offline the world would evolve independently and may "recover" from players actions.

we could have games with say 3 players playing in fortress mode, 6 in dwarf mode waging war to each other civ or cooperating against computer controled civs. It would not necessary need a good connection, just a master node always online.

I dreamed I was a wealthy man, still young, I dreamed I had a custom built overclocked desktop, with a blue water cooling system that circulated around my bedroom before going in and out of the computer case, I had an enormous aquarium shaped to look like a dwarf head with red stroboscopic lights going out of the eyes and a fountain streaming out of its mouth... I was playing dwarf fortress when I fell into the screen and ran through the wires, going around the whole range of ip addresses. Here and there ip cameras shaped as chained kittens watched over the entrance of my home, sending short bursts of data to a system of sentry guns that stood vigilantly, protecting the sleep of my loved ones with kevlar crossbows loaded with depleted uranium quarrels... I went down and down to the cellar and there I saw... I saw a fortress, first I saw a beowulf cluster , then after traveling to the switch I fell again in what felt to be a bottomless pit. It was not falling as much as flying. There was no movement in the darkness, no wind, no noise... nothing. but I knew. I knew I was going somewhere... then, the light. I came crashing down, fell through the canopy of a rain forest, flocks of birds watched me fall then tried to attack me. I was there. A world full of life, with beasts, war, prophecies, disasters but also births, miracles and love. I saw crazed dwarves write thousands of pages of poetry on mugs or goblin bone earrings. I saw that and so much more that I cant recall. I walked through mazes, talked with ageless beings. Played dice with clowns, bet on the outcome of arena fights, drank and feasted in brightly lit halls, saw them crumble as ages passed and time drifted by. I saw most wonderful things, I saw what could be, what should be, I saw things I'd rather not, things that cant be unseen and even if they are but the shadow of a memory that's not even mine; they now keep me from enjoying simpler pleasures.

My point being, if dwarf fortress was to ever be adapted to parallel computing (and maybe multiplayer gaming), how many bay12ers would be ok to join a big cycle-scavenging based program to run a persistent df world?

I know this is a wild hypothesis but eh, let's roll! who would feel like joining?

I for one would gladly invest in a beowulf cluster just for that :D
(ok maybe not, I'd do some bitcoin mining too)

(apologies for spelling/grammar mistakes, english isnt my first language)

Ok, after a bunch of cancelations (creature occupying site)I never had before I'm starting to get pissed, the fort is going well in spite of having no metal whatsoever in defense mod, now I have a violent ghost  and I cant engrave any slab because "no slab available"... My legendary mason churns out masterwork slabs and my legendary engravers dont want to engrave them. In the bug tracker the bug is "resolved" maybe it is the mod?
some help would be appreciated

It's okay, nobody can be brainwashed. Only other people can. You yourself know that you're much too smart to fall for that, right?
I think you overestimate how smart I know I am.
I'm an easily manipulable moron. To the point where I pretty much agree with everyone over anything as they say it, unless I already had a strong view on it. And even sometimes then.
Wow, you should watch out for people like me in RL. I can manipulate people something mind-boggling. I'm too nice to use it for anything but getting out of trouble.
It's like a double edged sword.
I'm easily convinced that other people are right, but I am amazing at lying because I can convince myself that my lie is true. And things like that. I just have to throw my lies in first before anyone else can work any trickery at me.
I'm not refering to that. I's easy to tell when someones lying. You just need to go through what the person logically expects you to want, and how similar it is to real life. Theres also alot of intution. Lying is always obvious.

Now, what most people don't realize is obvious in conflation of the truth. The truth can be warped into a more useful answer. It hard to describe, but lying is obviously bull, but the truth, defuses it somehow. And really, all you need is to know what someone expects is the truth. It is about someones perception of reality, and how you can abuse it. Whether or not you believe your own story is irrelevant, save for obvious tells. Its all about content ad how you deliver it. I can almost always spin a perfectly posssible Lie almost instantly, with the absolute most realistic delivery ever, Because, I think about what I would be expected by the individual to say in these given circumstances.

I should teach a course on this.

Another thing, thread derailing... Some members of the hive mind are tasked with derailing, and all the others follow, there is some impulse somewhere that makes it happen. Where does it start, why?

We should ask the legendary derailers...
Another things, for girlinhat (for whom I nurse a disturbing kind of fondness, seeing her in my minds eye like some kind of queen playing df sitting on a slade throne and surrounded by magma fountains, but lets not speak of it.) and other legendary bay12ers... What are they? Are they closer to the center of the hive mind, do they have more connections with hit?

I think we should try and map the bay12 hive mind, in a theoretical way...

DF General Discussion / Bay12 Hive mind (formerly Toady's botnet)

Lately I was reading some code, when it struck me... If toady was an evil individual he could have backdoored all the systems running dwarf fortress to create some giant botnet since the code isnt open source no one can tell... I dismissed the thought with a mental wave of the hand (baaah, he isnt the kind of individual to do this, and someone would have noticed) then it struck me (yes again) that he has backdoored... Our minds!
think about it, hasnt been df running in your mind like a daemon? Sometime you think about it you dont know why, things IRL remind you of it... And when you are idle (asleep) its still running : look at the dream topics! He didnt even bother with a rootkit, his plan is so perfect... Lately I saw interest arise in subjects such as the Bay12 space program (which I should have applied to since I can count some hours on orbiter traveling to other planets, mastering the slingshot process, the reentry and that kind of thing, brainfreeze if you read me and it isnt too late, I would gladly join) and members flock around these projects, isnt that another proof that there is some kind of "globalbay12 brain", does it think by itself? or is there a puppetmaster... Or should I say a puppettoadmaster?

So what is he planning to do with his bots? when (if he didnt already) will he set them in motion? and how...

(maybe the proof that I am truely infected is that I have no problem with that)...

Cause they didnt stop at enslaving them, they drank their soul and took over their name, that's how this evil bourgeoisie get reborn every time you slaughter them.

IMO if you cant handle half a dozen bogey men, how well shall you fare against a score of thieves amongst whom there will be two or three masters at arms clad and wielding masterwork loot-to-be? I see as a danger for the first days of my adventurers but after some weasel wrestling they are more like training dummies since they cant touch me. The main problem being exhaustion if I dont play a vampire.

Elves eating humans = anthropophagism

I wonder how power levelling ambusher will impact the new system. Currently you can kill a whole army without being noticed if you are legendary...

There should be a way to prevent the diggers from effectively destroying the defenses every time they strike. water walls and magma honeycomb are fine by me but you cant deny that they are quite megaprojects like in what they involve. Bringing the magma up, digging the water wall. Putting it under pressure. All of it seems like a giant finger to the newbies. Yes we can turn it off, but as for now you can enjoy invaders without having to turn them off. I fear overpowered diggers to be able to destroy even most advanced fortress if their overseer hasnt engaged in a form of megaproject like waterwall...
Now just try a thoguht experience : newbiehalls dwarf fortress. Tell me, shall we have to spend 5 years only preparing a pumpstack for a magma moat? How would a newbie perceive that?
Kind of "yeah I managed to get everything up and running, it took me five years but now my dwarves have food and beer. Lets focus on the military...
Aaah crap a tunnel has opened, the fort entrance has caved in, my poorly trained marksdwarves are getting skewered, my defense plans screwed because I could not set up a magma pumping system fast enough!

Maybe I'm not dwarven enough to find it fun but making the game require a mini megaproject from the player for him to see a new feature... Is it an improvment? Those diggas are kind of all or nothing and currently with how maconry works if they pierce your inner walls you are screwed. If we had barricades, we could prepare primary and secundary fall back position, in case all walls are breached but then, why would not they be able to dig straight down ten level and open a tunnel right into the hospital?
I dont like to be a doom sayer but I foresee an overpowered game breaking feature that only most advanced players will be able to deal with.

It would not be fair to pit us against diggers without means to defend ourselves. I love the waterwall idea, but if you get diggers in the first siege, will your wall be set up already?

I dont think you should. Meatgod's story isnt a good intro to dwarf fortress...
I may look like a sissy but I have really been unsettled... I read through all of it and it left me deeply shocked (and I have no problem with mermaid farming or dwarven child care).
Even thinking about it with some hindsight send shivers down my spine. Seriously, if asked I would advise against using it.
