DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: July 13, 2012, 05:32:16 pm »
Yeah, I thought they would go apeshit about the miner's death since he was here from the beginning of the fort but as he was always lost in remote tunnels digging for glory, his death went unnoticed (ha? the creepy guy died? serves him well!)...
but when they lost THAT bloodsucking f(r)iend to tragedy...
the hunter was the first to snap... He interrupted his meal halfway through his masterwork roast, drew his crossbow, shot the legendary cook in the head, and started to loose at the bystanders... by the time the militia got there four dwarves laid in pools of blood and roasted tallow... after that there was a chase in the tree farm, tough luck the game was a warrior with one of the masterwork battle axes. he ran around (one z level of cleared soil is flippin big when there is a psycho with a battleaxe to find and dispatch) took on the militia men one by one then got shot... with only two survivors in the militia I decided to sit back and eat my dinner watching it...

I must add that soundsense is a great thing to have...

funny enough, before I lost the fort to tantrum spiral (in defense mod, I was half way equiping my squad in masterwork steel everything) I was training a near legendary armorer when one of the legendary miners got snuffed. I decided to wait and see, then selected the armorer to check his preferences and then :
ex general, ex grand oracle, ex ex ex ex of half page of civs and govs...
I jailed the sucker in the arena then smelted his two masterwork steel helms just to make him cry and go berserk... training dummy for the marksdwarves...

Since I discovered quantum menace two slits method I never embarked without an aquifer. It took me a few shots and I am not wiser than anyone here but ever since I have enjoyed
an infinite supply of water  easy waterfalls everywhere, underground crops wherever I wanted them, and many more wondrous things!
And not to derail the thread, among those things : dead cats preventing the closure of the well floodgate and flooding the dining room. Curse them! Things went even worst when the dwarf adopted by said cat started tantruming.

DF General Discussion / Re: Am I crazy...

I lurked around a fair lot of forums on teh interwebz and since I am quite shy when I am online I get scared when I read flame wars but here I feel confident enough to post from time to time because even the flame wars tend to be polite and waged by well-behaved people. The moderation is not oppressive and is mostly done by the members themselves. And to wrap it up there are some wonderful people around (girlinhat, aussie, loud whispers, and so much others)...

or maybe all of you are psychos and jerks that enjoy playing a maddening game of kitten/baby slaughter... Oh wait I enjoy it too :s

nearly deleted my post after reading it again. I seldom dare to post for fear of not being up to the forum level.

Life Advice / about to move the boot partition
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:59:12 am »
When I decided to try linux (mint, debian)in dual boot with win7 I thought I would get bored pretty fast and keeping it on a small partition would be a good idea. Now I completely filled my 10gb partition, I dont use windows anymore and I need more space. I fiddled around with gparted, now all I need to extend my / partition is to move the partition containing the grub. When I started to do it, gparted displayed that my system would not boot anymore if I moved the partition. what should I do? copy it to where I need it (I doubt it would do it) then delete the original, move it or... since in sudo I cant launch grub (please install grub legacy) maybe I should reinstall grub?
help gladly accepted :)

I was not clear about "sticking between the plates". I meant sticking it at joints, where the plates do not cover.

Spear is enough ay, but against an armored horse, better use a halberd. Unless you are skilled enough to stick the spear between the plates the weight of the halberd will alow you to hack through them with inertia.

Indeed you can slash with the tip, but a halberd blade is heavier so it make it easyer if the goal is to cut off the horse's leg. Of course if you just want to open the throat or make it die from bleeding the spear will do.

Swords are just not made for fighting  horses, better use a spear or a halberd. I'd rather use the latter because you can jump out of the way AND slash its legs whilst it's  charging. With a spear you can put the butt into the ground and level the blade at the horse's chest. Its more dangerous (you are more likely to miss) if you are alone but when you are within a small infantry unit against charging cavalry its definitely better.

It would not be about sword training but more about general combat training. Knowing how to move quickly, keep your balance and all of that. sword training would help of course (clean blows that severs legs as an example and dont get stuck in) but the main problem would be avoiding getting your skull crushed and chest caved in as DAE pointed out.
