Best traps are cage traps, as long as stuff doesn't live on your embark or have the [TRAPAVOID] tag, you get free pets forever. Also good is a bottleneck, force your invaders into a small, thin entranceway and take them out individually via a line of weapon traps.

Personally, I feel like modding in cobalt, it's a nice color.

I might have to mod that in for my fortresses sometime. Colbalt, uranium, and some other metals from ores that already exist. I wonder if Toady will ever put this in the game. It would be fun to have barrels of Mercery rolling out of your smelters. Although I have no idea what you would use this for.

I had embarked on a BC shrine once. He killed a puppy and punched a kitten which exploded against a tree, but was generally pretty harmless to my dwarves.

You could always go back to .23. It's not quite as far back as 40d, but it still tells you the first five or so layers.

Hm... I've always thought it would be cool to call myself something from dwarf mythology, but I've never actually gotten around to doing it. Actually, in celebration of the upcoming completion of the inheritance cycle, I might name my fort in .26 (once it's released) Farthen Dûr.

I've always been partial to whatever-I-can-get-my-hands-on-inite, but with my recent studies I've come to grow fond of slade, which technically counts as a stone and a metal.

Have it deteriorate (rot) and instead of miasma release a syndrome-inducing cloud of radioactive evil?
